"Mediation is hard, but if you can create the willpower to stop your brain from thinking long enough, you can pretty much create the willpower to do just about anything." amazing line :)
Meditation is not to stop your brain...that way you go nowhere...instead meditation is more of let it go with ease approach...hence meditation is not being done but it happens when you just sit still and don't try to do or force upon anything.
Meditation is just life changing. I meditate daily, if I miss a day or so I really notice a difference. I feel so much better and have more energy after meditating....life is more effortless. The ability to REWIRE YOUR THINKING through meditation is such a GIFT.
I don't think I've found this by accident. I think we all feel this way in our lives. Trapped in an infinite loophole where the approval by "likes" from friends and even people we don't actually know that well, fuels our mind, and makes us feel "happy" for a fraction of a second. Our values are so superficial these days and our mind is constantly focused on the external situations. I've meditated a LOT in my life, and I know that it's amazing and life changing. So why is it that I still choose not to do it lately? Why do we constantly seek pleasure and happiness in the wrong places? The human mind is crazy! We know what's best for us, but instead we choose, as Mamata said: "to watch Ellen videos". It's always the same thing: "Starting Monday I will go everyday to the gym", "After this exam I will start studying hard", "Just gonna eat this chocolate one last time, and start a diet as soon as possible". We keep bullshitting ourselves, imagining a perfect future for us. But how can we have a perfect future, if we don't fix our mistakes in the present? Thank you Mamata, for making me realize how fragile our mind is, and how important it is to stay in the present. It's a slow process for sure, but once we manage to conquer our mind, and work with it as a team, life can be much more beautiful, or as you say "in High-definition".
@TheEvolvedegg Hey man! So, the only person able to choose what to do with your life is yourself. I`m a bit like you in this matter; I`m also pretty good at everything I do! Which I`m very proud of, but at the same time, afraid, because that (fortunately) opens for us a lot of different paths to take in our lives. And the only thing that keep us from doing all of them, is money (let`s be honest, we need it to live in this modern society of ours), and of course, the ultimate deadline, which is our life spam. So, how can we know for sure what to choose for our career and life? Seriously, if that question had an answer, probably depression and doubt in people`s life wouldn't even exist! Like you said, a simple change in our life, is capable of overthrowing empires and completely change the course of our life! But that`s why it`s so scary in the first place. If you`re passionate about something, and know you're good at it, why not pursue that? Life is too short for us to keep wondering of a possible future. I`m not saying leave your job and do what makes you happy without a plan. we NEED a plan. What I would suggest (again, only an opinion), is getting back to meditation, and create a plan while at it. It won`t just make you sober on your choices, but also organize most of your questions and dilemmas in life. -Maybe save some money to keep you comfortable to leave your job for a few months and trying to go after your dreams; -Why not use your free time to slowly master skills that you know will facilitate the path to following your dreams? - Also just trying to find happiness in what you`re doing right now isn't a bad idea either! Whatever you choose to do, know that there is no wrong choice. Life can be drastically different with every little choice you make, but that's what make it so beautiful. The uncertainty of tomorrow, is one of the best (and also scariest) things in life. Use it for your advantage, and not to bury your head in negativity and doubts. There's a channel here in RUclips that I found out about last week and it's pretty damn good for helping us make the right decisions. The name is "Practical Psychology" (search it up). I'm sure it would be of great help :) Hope you find out meaning again in your life and pursue that with all your heart!!!
Hey Everyone! I know this girl in real life! We took Anatomy and Physiology together- we sat next to each other during class in college. She is an amazing human being! She's a honest, kind, loving person! So know the information you are getting from her is genuine and with all good intentions!
I started meditating 6 months ago ... Its was difficult in the beginning but here are the advandage you will notice. It will dramatically change your life in a positive way. Your inner world will drive you. Advandages are : 1. You can continuously focus on anything longer 2. Your inner soul will talks to you in terms by giving intiution. 3. You will realise what makes you happy, a realisation of your life purpose.
@@leonardocosenza429 i started to meditate for 10 minutes straight from bed and i noticed difference after a month. I myself was a people pleaser, lack of focus, always needing external stimulai to make myself feel good. Those things all of a sudden fall away. I was able to focus on my work and able to find solutions quickly. I became more comfortable being myself. I was able to discard others small talks etc. The level of confidence is unexplainable. It makes sense how monks get incredible mental strength to walk alone. Another important thing is the world of maya the matrix which is pulled to our own eyes will become clearer. To explain this image a glass of muddy water. If u allow time it slowly settles down and water and mud seperates. But in real life we keep thinking and each thought is like stirring the muddy water again and again. Meditation is that time you give to that muddy water so the reflection of that is, you know who is the real you and naturally distractions falls away. Hope this help.
2 years ago I start doing mediatation by only 3 minutes daily but now I m able to do it 1:30 hrs daily. I m glad to say that it really change my life, I feels more confident, hardworking, stress free and I enjoy life alots
At a very young age you display a great sense of maturity. I really liked the concept of balance between external and internal happiness and how they are inter related. Your sharing was very authentic and inspiring.
Mamata Venkat Hello ma'am. This video had been there on the recommendation list but I never managed to watch it until today, when it showed up at the top. It's strange how I've been through every single experience of yours, I happen to be a medical student in India, I was always in the top 3 of my class in school, and medicine was my only AIM but when I finally joined college I was shattered. The course was torturous, I had a few terrible experiences with some people and I was awfully homesick. I couldn't believe the fact that all that hard work for all those years that finally got me my dream course was useless because I just couldn't accept the environment. I was miserable and thought of dropping out of college several times. But I somehow sailed through. I've only recently started meditation and I'm still in Medical school, getting good grades because I managed to pull myself together but I still feel only good grades and family time make me happy and there's a constant struggle to excel in class because maybe I've associated my self worth with it. But I do realise that nothing besides this makes me happy, absolutely nothing from within. So I can totally connect to your video. I've found tremendous hope after watching your video and will be continuing the 15mins every day schedule. Thank you so much.
Inspiring! Thank you for sharing. Summary for those in hurry! *:D* 1. True success comes when you take the time every single day to work on yourselves internally and cultivate the values you want to see in yourselves internally. 2. Being able to hold on to those values and express them in any external circumstance whether they be *Positive* or *Negative*. 3. We will learn to do things when we choose to do them! 4. Learn about yourself every single day with meditation and using that and expressing it in any situation you are put in!
For me, a devout catholic, meditation is prayer. Since I started sitting 30 minutes a day in the chapel, looking at him, him looking at me, thinking, etc. my life changed for the best. Her meditation is my prayer
Great speech about meditation! I have been meditating for 8 months now and since then I been feeling every time better. I always try to explain to family and friends the benefits of it but I never manage to explain it properly, your speech has really helped me understand how to explain what meditation is and how it can help anyone
Meditation is not an exercise of the mind, it is a relaxation of the mind. And it is not about stopping the brain from thinking, it is about accepting the content of your mind, which afterall has all been gathered from the outside, accepting your mind and watching over your mind as one would watch TV, or a parent watching their children playing around in the garden, from a safe yet considerate distance.
When she said exercise she meant it as TRAINING your brain to be fully conscious so that you are not bombarded with thoughts. Hence why she mentioned that she gained self-confidence. Because you aren't thinking about how you look, what others think of you and just the bad thoughts you have of yourself. You are fully conscious in the present moment. You are at PEACE.
Im 19 and my biggest problem is being consistent. Its crazy cause I now find myself being more inconsistent then ever nowadays. Alot of change has come into my life and sometimes i dont know which path to take. Meditation has helped me alot but like other things im not being consistent with it. This video helped me alot. I was actually playing it out loud in my college hallway n i kept thinking " o my gosh ppl might get annoyed or look at me cuz im playing this video out loud" but i honestly stopeed caring after the first few minutes.. I rralized tht my mind was tryna scare me wen in all reality noone cared tht i was watching a video out loud. But anyways this video is a great one n i know tht im going to be more consistent and take my mental health more seriously
It's so true that seeking gratification from external sources has become a way of life for many, and most "skeptics" to meditation are people who've never given it a chance. As with anything, it's important to stick with the practice to reap the full benefits!
I started to watch this video for my English listening practice! But while listening her voice somehow my mind became very quiet! I think I was meditating unconsciously Thank you
The way you explained your dissatisfaction with silence was really interesting. How by focusing on quieting your interior world you could quiet the exterior more easily. Awesome talk. One of my all time favorites on the subject.
Clarity in your thoughts is visible. Inner peace is what we get from meditation. Circumstances change on a daily basis but that doesn't affect us internally. Thanks
Anyone who stumbled on this video, don't take it too lightly. Don't just watch this video and move on with your life as if nothing happend. You found a golden nugget, that will lead you to a goldmine if you start practicing this. Meditation will drastically change your life if you put in the time and effort. I'm very serious about this. Start today, and make it a commitment to do it for the rest of your life. No days off, no slacking. Show up everyday, preferably right after waking up in the morning, and right before sleeping at night. Peace.
The way she delivered the speech shows a lot about her charecter. She was on point and each point made sense. Thanks for sharing the words of wisdom with us. Cheers!
For people like me who can't and dont know how to meditate: just search on RUclips for guided meditations. They really do help and my life has pretty much transformed since I started listening to guided meditation. I'm currently listening to Louise Hay's work.
Meditation has also changed my life in ways I thought was never possible. It just makes everything more clear and shows you real path of your being a humanitarian and also what you are here to do.
Great video but I kind of disagree with the idea of "stopping your thoughts". Accepting your thoughts and just noticing them as thoughts and not giving them power is my goal when I meditate.
xrx0R 9 It's ridiculous what your education has done to you to believe that speaking "proper English" is the purpose of education! You should be ashamed of yourself.
It's wonderful that you have reached this position of “loving silence” and “loving yourself” through meditation. I also thank God for having raised my level by meeting your convincing speech.
inspiring! Yup, meditation can be hard. Been a meditator 35 years, myself, and some days it's still hard. To make it a habit, I think it really helps to have a teacher and be part of a community, although there are apps now too that people love. Myself, I do OM Meditation now as taught by Buddha Maitreya. Its easy, yet profound.
You don't need to forcefully shut down your thoughts. You just have to not interact with your thoughts and you'll realize you won't have any after some time.
I successfully dodged moving forward in meditation. Gave away the thought , as it was getting stuck. Now,this person has encouraged me to move forward. I will give it a shot. Great insights. Regards
A clear-calm mind is what everybody wants and I'm grateful for having it. I feel utmost silence in my mind such that I can focus on anything effectively. I feel a gentle sensation throughout my body as a result of deep meditation. I have attained control over my mind and I allow only positive thoughts to enter in. My habits have uplifted my mood and I'm happy about this.
Such a well spoken lady!! Well done Mamata, I love this. I was the same - went to Uni (broke up with my boyfriend before leaving) then did accounting, dreaded all my classes, I ended up graduating but don't do accounting now :) I am chasing my dreams and loving it. I try to live mindfully, I don't necessarily meditate but I exercise daily and focus on breathing at some point in the day :)
Meditation helped me during residency in a tremendous way. That’s why I just did a video on why everyone should meditate. Thanks for sharing your experiences. If you do not meditate and are struggling with stress, anxiety, anger, etc. please consider learning. Pura vida!
I have been meditating off and on for years now. She has inspired me to be consistent and to go for longer. I have also learned of new benefits of meditation like confidence, tolerance, compassion and love; values i seek to possess. I'm going to try harder, longer and consistently. Needed to hear this. Love her❤
Wow I related to almost every single thing she said from her experiences coming from a desi background, her emotions, her academic choices, just everything. You can tell she is successfully meditating based on how confident she speaks and with utmost conviction.
It is my first public comment on a youtube video. Mamata if you happen to read this, a couple of thoughts or may help others who browse through comments. + First of all, will congratulate you for putting together a very short and sweet version, for others to follow. + As you have mentioned in your talk, (i) certain experiences in your life drove you in the direction to pursue the path to look inside (ii) (not sure if you believe in soul, but likely you do, since you think mind is different that body) anyways; your soul was ready to take this approach based on its prior experiences (don't get me wrong, not undermining the effort that you have made to better yourself). + and of course, access to such parents/mentors, who are proficient in Raj yog makes it accessible. You have summed it up all very nicely. Would request humbly that as you continue on your exercise and practice, do share your findings and learnings with others. Physical words can never be sufficient to express what you experience in the journey of self discovery, but you seem to be much better at it and its one of your strengths. Wish you all the best.
Mamata as i am also an indian and i practiced meditation and stopped for one of the reason you listed... Now i am going to restart my new life again with Meditation. Thanks for Sharing....
Thanks for the motivating talk Mamata. Until today I had been doing meditation casually without focusing much on how my life would change if I choose to be consistent with it. Though, I could feel small change in my life, I had never been taking it much seriously. But after watching this video, I feel I should practice it with a little more serious and see how the magic works! Once again thank you. God Bless You Aravind U
Amazing speech. Same happened with me too. Now the focus has shifted from what the society needs to what I need. You are right about love. After I started meditating, I started loving myself more and in the process love things around me and be compassionate. One of the things that is different in being a human is, we are to be more conscious of our actions. Cannot let hormones control our every day actions. That is what meditation helps, if you ask me. It helps shut down the hormones from taking control.
Lovely video, Mamta. I've started meditating but on most days, I don't do it because it's just too darn hard. Your video has inspired me to take it a lot more seriously!
I'm glad she was able to turn her life around, and have the courage to do something different from her social pressures. As an Indian, I can also say that I faced similar issues. While I did like medicine, it wasn't for me, but it's not something that I realized until much later after medical school I've always liked science and learning how things work. That's why I started with engineering before medicine. Now, I think my passion is teaching. Life is a journey of self-discovery and people will continually change directions. Meditation was not my escape though. It was martial arts. All you really need is to find just one thing, anything, you can focus on and that can be your "meditation". For others it's music or painting or rock climbing or exercise. It's finding something you genuinely are interested in that you can focus on and not have to force yourself. Having that will power to focus on one task can then be applied to other things in your life.
Powerful message! Everything you said I can relate to my very own experience....let me just say there’s a profound euphoric state of mindfulness that occurs when you become so immersed in meditation that you are able to block out most external noise in your life.....there’s a great sense of calmness and clarity in your mind that is very powerful....I used to be immersed in this state of mindfulness....the tricky part is to maintain this state....there can be external noise/distractions that come along the way that disrupt this....for me this disruption was when I lost my job and found a more stressful job......it was a disruption that I couldn’t seem to shake off and I never seem to regain my practice of meditation...there was so much noise happening around me that I couldn’t regain that state of mindfulness like I did before....so what I’m trying to say is once you reach that state of mindfulness with meditation...you must be able to maintain a state of equilibrium that blocks all distractions and external noise from steering you off course...once you get steered off course, it becomes harder to return
Wow, this is incredibly relatable for so many college students these days, including myself. I wish I knew more people with the wisdom and genuine honesty as Mamata Venkat. I would absolute fall in love with this girl if I knew I her in real life. I can imagine just being able to chill and talk to her for hours and not ever get bored of her.
Amazing speech, very clear and mature. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to this(me included). Now I have to give meditation a try. Thank you for this!
I started meditating 5 years ago and what I learned: self control is one of the most keys to live better and reach your goals. It's very important to your relationships and in a job. Self control separates the strong from the weak. Separate winners from losers. It separates the jealous from the achievers. And consistent meditation will bring you that "power". You need self control to survive, to play with hard situations, you need to make fast decisions in a danger moments. You need self control and meditation will bring you completely free. No magic pills, no expensive doctor appointments, no the new miraculous new book in amazon... Do it for yourself, do it for the people who need you, do it for your future, do it for your survival. I well be back to here in the next 5 years to talk what I learned new with meditation practice.
I can relate to her. I am of indian origin living in Germany. I gave up medical school and was seen as failure. I finished my masters in biotechnology. My passion lies in music, but
archangel z She's an Indian, like even Mamata said, we are basically taught the way to success, and anything that deviates from that, at least, initially, seems like "failure" to ourselves or most of the people
I'm 21 years old, I can relate to all of this. Her story is pretty similar to mine, the only difference is that I used weed to improve my life. Weed brought meditation naturally to me. I don't think I would have done it without weed. I would have kept living in that mind bubble isolating me from my inner self. My confidence has improve, started hobbies I always wanted to have but I was always to lazy or afraid to start them. I'm really happy I got to experience this change at such a young age.
Im at that point right now in my life as im 20, might aswell try weed as i read all the beneficial thong that come from it, my confidence and self-esteem is preety down to 0...
I practise mantra meditation and it changed my life like nothing else. Sometimes I feel so happy while meditating, I start crying... tears of happiness :) I chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare ...and growing in character is just a side effect :)
You can chant whenever, wherever... the only thing important is to sincerely try to listen to the sound vibration. If your mind wanders, just bring it back to the mantra. Like anything else, you need to practise and like our guru said, be happy. This is just a simple instruction... there's a huge base of ancient knowledge behind it of course. You can sing it too if you want. :)
I listen Mamata, and I think that I'm talking in this video because her history is very similar to what I live and what I've learned to the meditation. I lived many months depressed because I was building my life only in one aspect: Professional (studies/job) because my context convinced myself I have to be the best, but i located in the extreme. Then that began a process with mi psychology and many meditations I discovered many characteristics of myself: perfectionism, fear of failure extreme, self-confidence by soil, bad manage of stress, etc. But In this moment I feel that I'm in ascending path and I will achieve MY thruth goals. Also, I discover each learning described. I recommend to who is beginning with this practice that they have to test differents ways: Yoga, Simple - close eyes-.etc. Some tips to meditation in your house: - Motivation /Focus in benefits/ - Lights off /Eyemask can works better/ - Silence or music /Yoga music can woks very good/ - Begin talks with yourself - Forget the time it takes - Enjoy it - Keep awake In my case I began with psycho treatment /Discipline: psychoanalytic/ and I think that It can help because +50% who comes to the meditatión is because he/she isn't satisfied. I hope help everyone who will read this comment. Thanks Mamata for your speech. JC - phrase: Don't make me walk when i want to fly 🚀
Fantastic. You speak with great clarity and conviction. Summary: The most important thing is knowing ourselves. We get distracted so much in this tech era, it has become very difficult to give our mind rest. Meditation exactly does that. It enables us to understand ourselves better which in turn creates clarity and hence gratitude, appreciation & joy. Someone can start with watching this video twice daily .
She is honest and right. "Noise" all around us - the internet, TV, cities, .... that's a big problem nowadays. Three ways of dealing with it: 1) Get used to it and filter it out, hear/retain only the useful information 2) Take walks in natural areas. 3) Find a quiet place, Meditate, study and think. Early morning is the best time for it.
This is great! I can relate to several of the things she talks about in this video. As a 16 year old girl, I have suffered depression for several years in my middle school and high school years and I have also felt very inadequate to others for a long time. I also understand the pressure Asian parents put on their kids to succeed. I have been meditating every day for the past 3 months, and it has helped me tremendously. I have also been learning more and more about self improvement, and I've been happier ever since. :)
This is by far the best thing heard on meditation. Thanks for sharing, so relatable. I am giving meditation a try from tomorrow itself. Need a bigger change from who I am today.Wish me luck ;)
Last year I had a nervous breakdown. I was laying in my father's sofa, crying, can't move when my uncle visited. He said, my mind was on overdrive. I kept on thinking about so many things at once that led me to breakdown. He said, JUST STOP THINKING AND LET YOIR MIND REST. Best advise ever. Now I just remembered it and planning to give him some money for such a genius idea.
The best TED talk I have ever listened to. Really amazing and very building speech. Thank you!! I have been experiencing meditation for a little while and it is really true that it helps a lot in finding peace and contentment. Besides, it helps one improve his/her focus on things and boost their productivity. It is by far the best thing that have ever happened to me. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have listened to each and every word that came out of your mouth in this speech. I found them very delicate and to the point. Thank you again and keep spreading love and cheer to the people around you!
I have meditated all my life on and off I have found that 20 minutes a day is enough to gain all the benefits of the practice. Even ten minutes as a minimum is better than nothing Two hours a day is pretty hard core and more like a monk's commitment than an ordinary person. It's just too hard for most to sustain and is not necessary.
I'm amazed by her story. Simple and real. The problems that all of us go through some time or the other. And even though we all try to run away from the universal solution that is meditation, yet most of us need it desperately.
For those having hard time to meditate, do small wins by starting 1min a day and increase each week, maybe 3 mins until it become a habit for 30 days. It would be easier to meditate later 10mins per day :)

Well, she sure has clued us in on the number one formula to both personal and professional success in life: having a strong, effective morning routine such meditation or tuning into the right kind of media first thing, mindfully driving to school and showing for classes with motivation, and really getting the mind orderly and structured for a productive day ahead.
I’ve been meditating 20 minutes per day for 9 months now and I can confidently say that I cannot see a life where I don’t meditate! For y’all wanting to get started just know that it IS gonna be hard on the beginning and “results” do NOT show up on the first few days. But if you can get truht that, you will change your life for the better forever! (Sorry for the bad English)
True. Meditation is changing my life. The person that i was before and after starting meditation, there's a huuugeee difference. It's like i can be in peace with my reality, and the present.
All she is saying is 💯% true .. these are obstacles when we try to meditate.. she has given motivation to those people wo try to meditate.. awesome, and tons of thanks for sharing such a genuine experience.
The best thing about social media is the realisation that we don't need it to be happy. Use it for certain functions like keeping in touch with people or a bit of entertaiment, but don't rely on it for likes and approvals. Maybe do it for a while, but then make the realisation and learn to moderate it. It's like you need to experience the first stages of drowning before you learn to keep away from the deep end.

-Maybe save some money to keep you comfortable to leave your job for a few months and trying to go after your dreams;
-Why not use your free time to slowly master skills that you know will facilitate the path to following your dreams?
- Also just trying to find happiness in what you`re doing right now isn't a bad idea either!
Whatever you choose to do, know that there is no wrong choice. Life can be drastically different with every little choice you make, but that's what make it so beautiful. The uncertainty of tomorrow, is one of the best (and also scariest) things in life. Use it for your advantage, and not to bury your head in negativity and doubts.
There's a channel here in RUclips that I found out about last week and it's pretty damn good for helping us make the right decisions. The name is "Practical Psychology" (search it up). I'm sure it would be of great help :)
Hope you find out meaning again in your life and pursue that with all your heart!!!

Great speech about meditation! I have been meditating for 8 months now and since then I been feeling every time better. I always try to explain to family and friends the benefits of it but I never manage to explain it properly, your speech has really helped me understand how to explain what meditation is and how it can help anyone
So happy to read this! Glad to read that meditation has been of benefit to you! Thanks for watching :)

Meditation is not an exercise of the mind, it is a relaxation of the mind.
And it is not about stopping the brain from thinking, it is about accepting the content of your mind, which afterall has all been gathered from the outside, accepting your mind and watching over your mind as one would watch TV, or a parent watching their children playing around in the garden, from a safe yet considerate distance.
true :)
Beautiful !
That’s I thought
When she said exercise she meant it as TRAINING your brain to be fully conscious so that you are not bombarded with thoughts. Hence why she mentioned that she gained self-confidence. Because you aren't thinking about how you look, what others think of you and just the bad thoughts you have of yourself. You are fully conscious in the present moment. You are at PEACE.
"Anything is noise if its loud enough to distract us."
That's deep!
I think I was meditating unconsciously
Thank you
The way you explained your dissatisfaction with silence was really interesting.

Peace.

Thanks, Rachita! Best of luck with your meditation practice :)

Sure you can use weed, but use it as a tool to improve yourself, don't just smoke for the high.

Some tips to meditation in your house:
- Motivation /Focus in benefits/
- Lights off /Eyemask can works better/
- Silence or music /Yoga music can woks very good/
- Begin talks with yourself
- Forget the time it takes
- Enjoy it
- Keep awake
In my case I began with psycho treatment /Discipline: psychoanalytic/ and I think that It can help because +50% who comes to the meditatión is because he/she isn't satisfied.
I hope help everyone who will read this comment.

Fantastic. You speak with great clarity and conviction.
Summary:
The most important thing is knowing ourselves.

Now I just remembered it and planning to give him some money for such a genius idea.

It's just too hard for most to sustain and is not necessary.

Use it for certain functions like keeping in touch with people or a bit of entertaiment, but don't rely on it for likes and approvals. Maybe do it for a while, but then make the realisation and learn to moderate it. It's like you need to experience the first stages of drowning before you learn to keep away from the deep end.
Meditation means finding yourself and finding yourself means becoming a happy person, being creative and compassionate and helping others.
Just the inspiration, I needed.. thank you
