- In general, I do not recommend that beginner acrylic pour artists use house paint in their acrylic pours. Once they've mastered some basic pours then is the time to do more advanced pours like Sheleeart blooms and swipes or the types of pours that Sara Taylor does.

Thanks so much for this video David. I have been using house paint as a base and keep getting failed pours. I even thin down the house paint with floetrol and water and still am getting failed pours. I am going back to regular paint for the base coat and keep trying. I just appreciate you so much for all that you do for us.

Hi this is Veni. So I watched this video. I’m very much a novice. I’m also a science graduate, so I understand your explanations really well. No if I don’t use the latex paint what should I use on my canvas before pouring and should be thin paint.
Use the exact same mix that you have with your other paints. That is the mot common base coat. Not thicker, not thinner, same consistency and same mixture (paint/medium).

I'm also wondering if it makes a difference whether the house paint has primer in it or not. Maybe. Thanks for all these interesting videos! Very helpful.
It does but I didn't really get in to that in this video.
Paint and primer are two totally different coatings. Even if someone is advertising as a paint/primer in one look on the back...it will tell you to prime.
@@FeatheredDreamStudio this is something I don't understand enamel paint does cloud pour so when I when you are told get Behr deep base I get that ..it's the white,Behr satin enamel that I am saying is turning my blooms into more of a cloud pour..I get about the mixing for your paints, UPDATE GILDEN INTERIOR WHITE.. Working good for me.
@@carolynbrew3770 deep base has different fillers (less actually) that allow for a lot more tint (without compromising the actual paint product) like blue and black. Keeping in mind, I am speaking from my training working at Sherwin Williams. Artist pigments are slightly different but kinda work at doing the same thing. They add color to a base. White base is thicker because it has more solids. Solids being clay, shells, etc. It will be heavier and stay lighter. That's why it takes very little black to darken anything. There's more "true color" and less solids (the white or off white base product). So...because so much tint has to be added to make darker colors that base will be much lighter. There are some ultra deep bases that are almost transparent. If you add too much of a darker base without tint it will (basically) dry cloudy. Next time you use house paint, have them add at least a small amount of tint...or stick with extra white base. If you have access to a Sherwin Williams go get sample quarts of all the different bases and play with them to see how they react. I hope this helps!
@@carolynbrew3770 for my pillows I use either white, black or anything with color (tint). Even the white has tint added to make it white.
I've always loved buying the "oops" house paint samples at my local hardware store, because they're such a great value, but THIS explains all of the issues I've had with some of them! Pesky densities...

I want to use house paint for the base because it’s cheaper and I scrape off and throw away a lot of my paint. I generally trash at least 3 before getting one I like
Glue and Floetrol are cheaper per gallen including the acrylic paint to color it with in my opinion and they work better for most types of acrylic pours.
David - as always, very detailed and helpful for the comparisons! Getting just the right "pillow" for Sheleeart Bloom (and everything else just right) does take luck as well, it seems. You might want to go back and check - I think, perhaps, the two Colorart cans went with the wrong paints. Looks like that, maybe, in reading the cans as you went line by line. THANKS so very much!

I read somewhere that house paints with acrylic don't last long before cracking, fading, or not in good condition. Have you experienced any issues with house paint?
No. I never use it by itself so you get extra protection from the additional arylic paint plus I always put a UV resistant varnish over my paintings.
i use house paint with my other paints and do fine. and i use the other things too. and it is much much cheaper. just have to make sure they flow the same consistency, mix.

I use Gldden white satin to paint the canvas to seal, then I let it dry for 2 days. Then acrylic paints.
The canvases I generally use are already gessoed. Do you feel like adding the Glidden gives you better final results?

Thank you for the video I have been watching Alot of sheele art and did a few beautiful Blooms on some really small canvas because I wanted to see before going bigger but they still haven't dried yet..Can you tell me what you think did I do something wrong or because of the amount of paint it takes longer?..The heavy ness of a paint should it matter when theses Asssie artist are using house paint and poloy..For medium..I used the bear 8300 ..I agree with you that this is something you better know your fuild art well because it's a different thing I think people are seeing the lacing and cells and want to do this..The Riley Taylor method is a good way to start..Gina has some good vedio on that.Happy Holidays 🎄
Yes, density of paint is pretty key for the cell activator. Less so for the colors but still imporatant.
Hello! Different topic.... Someone said that adding vegetable glycerin to acrylic paint will give the paint a beautiful shine. Do you think glycerin would interfere with the final resin or varnish coat? Thanks!
If you are going to put on resin or vanish you don't need to worry about the shine of the painting. The resin and varnish will bring that out. I hope that makes sense Suzanne.
What can I as a beginner use as a pillow base? I don't want the paint to roll over each other like what happens when they don't use a base or to little base.
use the exact same paint as the rest of your paints. Either cover the canvas with it before you pour or after you ahve done your pour put that color around your puddle and then tilt from there. I have a video about this here - ruclips.net/video/q-IZCgkrzIc/видео.html
How do you stack red on white without it turning pink?
The only way I know is to use thicker paints which mix WAY less than thin paints. Otherwise they are going to mix and you need a separating color in between.

Have you done any experiments using house paint for both the pillow AND the pouring paints themselves (Nowadays there seem to be more heavily pigmented, deep colors available)? With or without some sort of medium, like liquitex pouring medium, or U.S. Floetrol, or glue and water, etc. and with or without silicone in them? I looked but didn't see any. I haven't had any good luck with only house paint in my pours and haven't made any videos for that.
I have found that the color place eggshell works perfectly for the shele art bloom, but you didn't use it in your test.
Blooms are a different ballgame. This was just to show the differences of using house paints in more traditional pours.
Hi David I am confused I decided to try the Behr 8300 deep base Gloss !No color to it .. so I went and got one with white and when I first did my bloom was really beautiful ‼️and 5 minutes later it looked like a cloud pour 😞 Enamel like Satin enamel paint is used for cloud pour..this brand all has enamel.. Please exspain..I thought I was getting the one that was the best, for blooms..I have totally got this down but need the rt pillow paint
Sounds like the pillow paint was too thin and the colors dropped through it but it is hard to say without seeing a picture.

As the other paint I was using didn't say anything about enamel..I have already used these so I can't take back if you think my pillow paint was to thin I don't know how I would make it thicker it came rt out of the can..I really appreciate your response as I did spend $$ on the deep base and the white so if I can still use them but I just don't understand why this is paint that has enamel in it ?

some have videos saying to add equal parts triple thick polyurethane to house paint as a base. what does that do?
It sounds like that is for the colors for a Sheleeart blooms/swipes. I havne't heard of that being used as a base.

Nope. Every batch seems to be different and you might have to add some water or floetrol to get the right consistency but that is a trial and error type adjustment.

Can it? Yes. Flat and gloss don't seem to work near as well as satin or even eggshell though.
What did u mix the house paint with? Nothing?
For the two nothing. For the deep base I put a tiny bit of white just to make it not transparent.

Have done many successful pours with just house paint, at an appropriate consistency. No not sheleeart style, but I don't think that's always the aim.
Oh you can absolutely do them. I don't disagree at all. They are just different than a pour with a more traditional pouring medium and paint.
The Behr. 8300 deep base is not used as the pillow as you said, but used as the medium along with varnish to mix your colors with. You are incorrect here. I’ve been doing the bloom technique for over 1 year

I'm confused; most house paint is automatically acrylic, which is SO different from latex house paint, the main difference between the two is their ingredients...both are water-based but, acrylic is more adhesive and elastic than latex, and IS acrylic paint so should be used in acrylic paint pours. Why did you single out the latex paints, which no one would use anyway, unless they are doing latex paint pours?
Most of less expensive paints sold and Lowes and Home Depot here in the states are latex paints. The higher quality paints (and therefore more expensive) tend to lean more toward Acrylic paints. That also depends on interior and exterior and the brand of paint also. Considering most of the people watching my channel are very cost conscious that is where most testing comes from.
