I know most people will disagree with me, but I think that the 1987 to 1993 era was the pinnacle of Lego Space: The Futuron Monorail, Message Intercept Base, Mega Core Magnetizer, Deep Freeze Defender... even the smaller space sets like the Allied Avenger or Galactic Peace Keeper were absolutely awesome!
When I was a kid, Blacktron and M Tron were so mysterious to me as they were in older kids’ collections. Maybe I’d find the odd mini fig into my toy box, but I’d have no idea how they got there. Ice Planet, Space Police 2 and Spyrius are what first captivated me as a kid. I’ll never forget those first few sets. Core memories for sure. But I played most heavily with Exploriens, UFO, And RoboForce. This is when they got more ambitious with their prints, and introduced more unique brick shapes without going fully representational. UFO pushed it a little with the saucer pieces, but they still felt platonic enough to blend in with my collection and lend themselves to creative stuff to build. Those Explorien holographic stickers, the fossils, and god especially the data disks from all these space sets did something special for me. Although not space themed, the Aquanauts and Aquasharks fit in nicely alongside this generation and led to some incredible builds and battles that I’ll never remember the details of. Unitron was rare as hens teeth to see among my friends and toy stores, always dreamed of the monorail system. I started to check out a bit with Insectoids but they were still pretty sweet. I think the more representational and explicit lego pieces and prints became, the less charming and imaginative they were. That’s not to say there weren’t soon cool designs in the 00’s based on this video, but I know where my heart is.
I count about 55 of those sets which i have, starting with Blacktron two and going right up to the present day. Insectoids have always been my favourite, and were the first theme where I collected all the (major) models. I love explorians and ice planet, but was to young to get more than a smattering of their sets. I then collected all of the two Mars themes quite religiously and have gotten a smattering of models from all the subsequent themes. I'd also include Rock Raiders, which while not a spave theme was set on another planet, and was a spiritual sucessor to the civilian space themes that came before. The various space port and lego city astronauts themes are also great as well!
I'm actually new to collecting only vintage sets of Legos, the only vintage set I have is set 6820. Very cool set, I am missing a few pieces but the ship is in decent condition with most of it's parts.
IMO Ice Planet, Space Police, Blacktron, M-tron, UFO, Insectoids, and North American exclusive Robo Force could work fine as a movie or Netflix series.
I love classic space, yes it's nostalgia is over played by lego but there are so many unique builds and such a weird whimsical town ask but also irry and hard sci-fi (or at least as hard as a blocky childrens toy could go the 80's) atmosphere about it
I had at least 32 sets (mostly the tiny sets, a couple of small to medium sized sets and then a large space station, no. 6971), from space series from 1978-1988. Now most of the pieces are gone and what is left are in pieces in a box with not a single build instruction for any of them. And nobody locally sells loose replacement bricks. Sets are so old that they are not even listed on Lego's site anymore :(
You show several promo type sets in 1979 that have yellow space guys. There were only red and white until 1982. Other than that, nice to see my favorite theme featured...
Never knew how old these were, my grandma had loads of these legos at her house for me when i was a kid in the mid 2000s, she must have gotten them passed down to me or something, coz its crazy, i never knew how old these were, might go and ask her if i can take em home lol
Insectoids was my favorite space set growing up. Lego should release a similar more modern theme so that people with cities, and moc cities, can have something from outer space to invade those cities, because I really haven't seen hardly any moc UFO builds.
Have the large space monorail 6991 system complete with instructions, just no box. If only we'd realized back in the day how much more value that was going to add!

@@MetalSonicBricks They went white, and used the same citruses transparency that M-Tron used instead of the Classic Yellow. I can see the co$t $aving measures that was used. But I did like the pods they made instead of the typical 2 level seats.
