To plant your bulbs in spring time , just put your garlic seed bulbs that you have drying through the winter into the fridge about a month or month and a half before planting outside in the early spring , they will still bulb up for a nice harvest in the fall
I had no luck with my "pukka seed" garlic bulbs last year - the (European/French Wight) bulbs got attacked big-time by some root aphids. As I saw the leaves yellowing, I watered them more thinking it was a water deficiency problem, which I think the pests thrived on. In a separate patch as an experiment I planted some ordinary grocery bought purple Spanish garlic. Out of a dozen or more cloves I got 2 plants which each produced a small garlic bulb to harvest. For the rest, the foliage died back completely and for the winter I mulched the plot with sheet cardboard topped with wood shredding. But surprise, surprise, in the past week or so, strong garlic clumps are springing up from those hidden bulbs poking thu the decomposed cardboard. They look really healthy so I am just gonna wait & see if I get a proper harvest, they certainly have an early start!
I planted mine today 😁 .. wasn't aware of the manure requirement though ... and as only 1" deep on free-draining soil, I will spread some compost over .. thx Tony, for all the good advice

Hi Tony, Great video. I've just started growing veg last October as I now have a garden. I planted my Garlic (in no dig beds) in October last year in one bed with broad beans. I planted more garlic around my first early potatoes at the start of March this year.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere (New Zealand), it is normal practice to plant garlic on the shortest day (June 22) and reap it on the longest (December 22). Last year I planted my garlic late August - as recommended by a commercial grower - and had a great crop. This year I am going to do the opposite and plant early - Easter to be exact - April 19 - 22

Hoping to plant my garlic this weekend, weather permitting. I have Czechmate (hardneck), Solent Provence (Softneck) and my own cloves of Elephant Garlic from 2018 (already in - one clove per 30L bucket) Steve
U can plant it as deep as u say and not get as large of a bulb. U are supposed to plant them about as deep as the clove is tall so if a clove is a half an inch tall then u cover it with a half inch of soil. And There are two ways to get bublis. Softneck garlics when stressed during the growing period will produce bublis outside of the bulb down by the roots, and hardneck garlics produce a scape which is a central stalk that has a pod that has bublis in them. And this is really the only reason for the scape. And elephant garlic is not a garlic it is a leek. And garlic likes a slightly acidic soil and does not like alkaline soils tho it will gro in them. And planting depth stays the same no matter the soil type. Elephant garlic is a LEEK not a garlic. And bulblis u plant a little more shallow as they are not as big as cloves usually. And while ur right if u plant bulbis it is usually a two to three year process to get garlic bulbs if u create the right soil conditions u can get bulbs in one year and as large a 2in. I know I have done it. And normally what is produced in the 1st growing season for a bulblis is not called a flat its called a round and that is likely cause its round like a marble.. I have grown and sold thousands of bulbs of garlic a year for over a decade and sold in the MN Garlic Festival for years. And won awards for the largest Creole garlic. And grown bulbs up to 3.5 inches and not just a couple of them.
I can honestly say I've never thought about using the bulbils, thanks for the tip Tony! I plant my cloves anywhere I think there's enough space, cant get enough, such a useful plant for cooking. Really enjoyed this, thank you!
I plant my garlic in fall. I live in Norway. The small cloves from the garlic I plant in pots in the greenhous. When the green folige arrive early in the spring, I pick it to use in salads or in other dishes. Delicious.
Today is March 29, WIlko was selling garlic for planting so I bought some. Do I need to chill it in the refrigerator first? Also, when would it be ready for me to dig up, when the green part starts to go yellow? Thanks for the great videos!
I need to plant my garlic asap I had flooding last year so lost about half of my garlic so need to go out and buy more... Great video I never knew about the bulbils I'll definitely have to give that ago. Years ago I used to plant garlic in the spring and never got a good crop of any at all now planting in October I at least get some good sized garlic, I'm hoping this time around will be the year I get lots of big supermarket sized once with the flooding hopefully sorted.
Hope that you get a good crop this year Kimmy, if you use supermarket make sure its organic as normal garlic will have been sprayed with a growth inhibitor
I love your videos! Thanks for the time, shared knowledge & experience 👌 I just pulled up some late last year garlic today. They're fab! I was thinking to plant them straight away. Can you plant freshly harvested garlic? Or should you dry them first? I'm almost sure it would make no difference. But it would be great to know what you think. Thanks x
I live in south central Texas and it rarely stays cold enough to satisfy the temperature requirement for garlic, but I do have 'trick'. I put the whole heads of garlic in a brown paper bag and store them in the fridge for a month. I've only done this for Spring planting but it does work. The winters where I live are too wet for onions and garlic to stay in the ground.
Hi, I've just found your channel after searching "how to grow garlic UK." A very useful, detailed video- thank you so much! I'm a total beginner, so can you please let me know what purpose the gravel serves at the bottom of the bucket? Is it vital or could I just add compost to a bucket and then add the garlic cloves? Also, how long does it take from the time of sowing to harvesting? Thank you!
With containers the gravel will allow it to drain as typically garlic goes through the winter and if it was just compost the container would struggle to drain during the storms the uk gets in winter
Thank you for your recordings. I love them. In the years to come I plane to have an organic vegetable garden. Do you use any chemicals? And in case you don't how do you mix your vegetables, that you don't need pesticides. Do you use fertilizer? What do you do to minimize weeding? Do you use Epsom Salt in your garden? Thank you very much.
Nice video, I will be planting my garlic this week in a raised bed. We have had our first frost nights here on the swedish westcoast so I think now is the right time, I have seen different recomendations on spacing, just how close can you space them? I will feed the bed with lots of bokashi compost.
Hi, greeting from Scotland, I normally sow my garlic at the beginning of October. This time it never showed signs of growth until 2019, I am not sure when to lift the garlic. Regards Ken

I'm growing garlic this year, 2019 & leeks in fall/winter, zone 8a, USA. I don't know why I haven't before since I put garlic in just about everything we eat. I'm also taking your advise on the fall/winter onions too! I ordered 1000 seeds today of Texas 1015Y, sweet slicing onions, like a Spanish onion, that I'll sow indoors & grow my own transplants. I did tons of research after your suggestions to get the ideal onion for my area and everything else I needed to know. I didn't realize growing them from seed took so long....over 175 days :-o but it will definitely be worth the effort! Thanks for the video
Hi I am interested in planting. Did you mean that we should plant just before the cold season(winter). Thank you take care lots of love from South Africa
Tony? I've seen videos about forcing daffodils for a Christmas show, by putting them in the Fridge to trick then into thinking winter has passed, can you do this with garlic?
I am preparing my garlic for this weekend after last years flop( planted in autumn in small pots in the earth ao i can move them later and than plabted them to close to the potato row)
I'm in Calgary, Alberta Canada - can I plant outside now or should I start inside and transplant outside in the Spring? It gets mighty cold here at times. Or should I plant inside in pots and just move the pots outside? If so, how big a pot will I need per garlic?
iI live in Honduras which is sub tropic.....you mentioned how it needs colder weather and here it is hot all year round. my garlic does not develop a large head,????????
Rosemary place it in the crispa draw of the fridge for about 2 months before you plant it out. this will give it the vernalisation required for it to split and produce good heads for you. Sorry for the late reply
In south East Asia people cooked with lots of green garlic instead of green onion it taste super delicious but in US it is impossible to buy garlic green unless you plant it yourself . Even in all the U-tube have mention of people using green garlic only waiting for the leaves to turn yellow to harvest the garlic. In South East Asia market you can easily find green garlic it taste a lot more delicious than green onion the white part I’d rounder and bigger than green onion .
just planted my Garlic and onions, didn't know about the 2 year thing for those small bulblets. Do you plant those at the same time as the main bulbs?Quite often get new plants growing where some have been left behind. Thanks Tony
Last time we grew Garlic we planted in the spring. What we got was powerfully strong; like one clove of homegrown was as strong as a whole head of store bought. It's landed in the "too strong for our garden" list along with broccoli (broccoli which was amazing but had quite the kick from the strong flavor)
What Tony said. I went to a garlic festival a few years ago and bought several different types. Narrowing my choice to 2 types. One strong and one a bit milder.
Thanks for this video, Tony. Super informative, and I will be using the tips you've provided. I am new to gardening, and want to start with garlic. Given that it is April, currently cool & sporadic rainy days in California, how can I still get started on planting garlic? Is my only option to plant indoors or can I get away with putting cloves into the ground with crossed fingers that it'll get it's needed 30-60 days of cool weather? Please advise. Thank you, in advance!
@@simplifygardening I will have to just accept that I've missed the mark then. I will wait for fall to plant as it is 80F outside today. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos!
sometimes the winter is to cold or long and the green shoots from autumn gets limp and yellow, do u cut it off at spring or let the plant manage it? thanks.
Hi, I'm in US zone 7a and I watched your video because I'll be planting garlic for the first time, October 6th, 2020. I'm putting them into a 50 gal container around the edges with a kale in the center about 6 " apart. I'm hoping the kale (Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch with a 30" spread) won't crowd the garlic. The garlic is Red Inchelien. The pots are in the sunniest spot in my yard ( i have tons of Pecans) but soon the trees will defoliate and I'll have more sun. I hope I'm doing it right.

Hoping to plant my garlic this weekend, weather permitting. I have Czechmate (hardneck), Solent Provence (Softneck) and my own cloves of Elephant Garlic from 2018 (already in - one clove per 30L bucket)
Steve
Yes the cloves for my elephant were all my own too that I harvested, Fab sized
I planted mine here in Southern NSW, Australia 🇦🇺 just over a week ago.
Hi, i'm from indonesia. I like your video. Amazing
I believe, garlic is planted and eaten in the whole world! Amacing.
@@kathidori8504 my channel, pasar terapung banjarmasin. Indonesia. Thank a lot
@@AchmadTumardi thanks, I will look in
@@AchmadTumardi wow, this is also amazing! A totally unknown world for me. Probably you know to grow plants in the water?
@@AchmadTumardi thank you for sharing!
I can honestly say I've never thought about using the bulbils, thanks for the tip Tony! I plant my cloves anywhere I think there's enough space, cant get enough, such a useful plant for cooking. Really enjoyed this, thank you!
Yes just an idea for folks rather than throwing them, You could even stick them in a flower bed out of the way. such a good way to get more bulbs free
I plant my garlic in fall. I live in Norway. The small cloves from the garlic I plant in pots in the greenhous. When the green folige arrive early in the spring, I pick it to use in salads or in other dishes. Delicious.
Oh no what should I do ! I really wanna plant garlic but it’s about right summer right now ! Right now it’s May 23
Yeah your too late for this year, but you can plant it in September or october for next year
Oh well ok then
@@simplifygardening that's what we will do too 👍
@@SuzyTopAgent Dont worry stick with me folks you will soon be enjoying nutrient-dense foods that you just can not buy in the shops :)
my garlic is now in the bed. it was started off in modules in the greenhouse. ( only until the roots were showing )..................brian
Yes Brian, another great way to start them
Today is March 29, WIlko was selling garlic for planting so I bought some. Do I need to chill it in the refrigerator first? Also, when would it be ready for me to dig up, when the green part starts to go yellow? Thanks for the great videos!
Yeah id give it a quick chill it needs this to split into cloves and you wont get that now
Soak the cloves upright in water for a week and they will shoot green upwards and roots and get a head start when sown.
We grow garlic in late October in Indian occupied Kashmir.
Thanks for the time, shared knowledge & experience 👌
I just pulled up some late last year garlic today.
I'm also in Texas, you can still grow it without a cold phase it will just be a single bulb instead of separate ones
Hi,
I've just found your channel after searching "how to grow garlic UK."
A very useful, detailed video- thank you so much!
I dont use chemicals i make a lot of my own feeds and have videos on that. I mulch the garden to help with weeds
Nice video, I will be planting my garlic this week in a raised bed. We have had our first frost nights here on the swedish westcoast so I think now is the right time, I have seen different recomendations on spacing, just how close can you space them? I will feed the bed with lots of bokashi compost.
I wouldnt go no closer than 9" as they dont like their roots touching
I split up a bulb and sit them on a saucer in a little water for about 10 days. Top up the water, roots grow fast. Then I plant out like onions.
Great idea
Hi, greeting from Scotland, I normally sow my garlic at the beginning of October. This time it never showed signs of growth until 2019, I am not sure when to lift the garlic. Regards Ken
Ken wait until the leaves yellow at which point the bulbs have finished swelling, soon as they turn time to lift
Great video Tony! Been waiting for this one, I've never been very successful growing garlic!
Follow this one Shaun and you will have it coming out of your ears matey :)
Planted mine a few weeks ago in my garden border. They have started to sprout already. The ground has had some of my own compost mixed in it. Do I need more feed, as you mentioned. Great vids.
No if you use homemade compost that will be much richer than shop bought so you wont need additional fertiliser, Jill.
In the Fall, but garlick seems to grow slower in the SW sandy desert, even in amended sand.
Its likely your not retaining enough water, try adding lots more organic matter
I am planting my garlic this weekend :)
I just did mine for a collaboration video that should be out next friday

Kim seed is always preferable over sets.Sorry for the late reply I have had some personal issues
Great choice! I wish I was a gardener when I lived in South Texas! lol
growing mind now 14 oct hope i gets some next year first time for me
Hi I am interested in planting. Did you mean that we should plant just before the cold season(winter).
Thank you take care lots of love from South Africa
Yes right up until the end of winter
Where the heck do I buy the bulbs? Is the grocery store okay?
Tony? I've seen videos about forcing daffodils for a Christmas show, by putting them in the Fridge to trick then into thinking winter has passed, can you do this with garlic?
Yes Alan you can do it with most bulbs
I am preparing my garlic for this weekend after last years flop( planted in autumn in small pots in the earth ao i can move them later and than plabted them to close to the potato row)
Make sure they dont get frosted so if they are out of the ground lift them onto stones as i did so they can drain
I'm in Calgary, Alberta Canada - can I plant outside now or should I start inside and transplant outside in the Spring? It gets mighty cold here at times. Or should I plant inside in pots and just move the pots outside? If so, how big a pot will I need per garlic?
u can plant out now Pamela
planted last week
awesome Sorry about the late reply, YT didn't let me know this comment was here and I just found it
Spring, but I live in Southwestern Louisiana so, I don't have consistent cold or heat in fall through spring.
Yeah we are the same, but as long as you have around 30 days with freezing temps they will be good to go
iI live in Honduras which is sub tropic.....you mentioned how it needs colder weather and here it is hot all year round. my garlic does not develop a large head,????????
Sounds great!
just planted my Garlic and onions, didn't know about the 2 year thing for those small bulblets. Do you plant those at the same time as the main bulbs?Quite often get new plants growing where some have been left behind. Thanks Tony
hows it looking ? Sorry about the late reply, YT didn't let me know this comment was here and I just found it
forgotten about this but just to say I tend to let them grow seems to be no probs
tried growing from cloves, now I have loads of garlic seedlings. How should I look after them?
yes and allow them to go to the second year and you will have full bulbs
What can you do with the garlic leaves
Last time we grew Garlic we planted in the spring. What we got was powerfully strong; like one clove of homegrown was as strong as a whole head of store bought. It's landed in the "too strong for our garden" list along with broccoli (broccoli which was amazing but had quite the kick from the strong flavor)
You can control the strength by the variety so maybe look at a milder garlic if it was too strong for you
What Tony said. I went to a garlic festival a few years ago and bought several different types. Narrowing my choice to 2 types. One strong and one a bit milder.
awesome advice and information Tony !!
Hey thanks mate. Worked hard on this one 😉👌
Laurie they do well outside or in a pot, but must be kept outside as they dont do well in to hot a climate
@@simplifygardening I will have to just accept that I've missed the mark then. I will wait for fall to plant as it is 80F outside today. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos!
Great video. Looking forward to getting some in the ground this fall.
You and me both! any week now I will be sowing mine as soon as they are available as I want to try some different varieties this year
Where do you buy your garlic for planting from? Can you then use your grown garlic cloves for next year?
Great video...love it from Mizoram,India
Hey welcome to UK Here We Grow. all the way from India. Glad you enjoyed the video my friend
In the fall. Because November was so hot it sprouted early the leafs I mean is that a problem!!
No not a prob
sometimes the winter is to cold or long and the green shoots from autumn gets limp and yellow, do u cut it off at spring or let the plant manage it? thanks.
leave the plant deal with it
In Australia St Patricks day is the usual time but I have found a week or two earlier is better.
It’s weather dependant herw
HI TONY... i would love to harvest my fall leaves.....could you do a video on the best way to do it is??? thanks love your stuff

I hope I'm doing it right.
awesome vid, i,ll be plating in my greenhouse from shop bought & putting into a deep tomato bag in a tomato bag tray over the next week. . if this works i might become the garlic guy of chorley as i,m cheesed off with failing veg due to crazy weather.
Can you please explain how to break dormancy period of garlic?
They need a period of temps below 5 degrees around 30 days plus and then when it warms this will break the dormancy
Thank you. I am contemplating of growing it to have an organic garlic. 👍
Marilyn it is so much better flavour than anything you can buy and organic of course :)
Thumbs down just because of the irritating music please no music
Sorry Trish. when I dont put the music in i get less views and less watch time. most enjoy it. I have turned the volume right down on videos since this one though
I planted in the fall and harvested July - small bulbs and I reviewed all growing tips... man all that work and what a big disappointment!
I am about to have a try at garlic in large pots, I will get the pots prepared and plant cloves from organic garlic I bought. Tony I was just wondering how many cloves you would plant in one of your 30L pots? Thanks
I have planted some cloves inside just last week, will this work? There are stalks coming up already? Any advice appreciated as I am very much a novice!😊
Nice, so informative! Do all of the garlic types produce bulbils? Or just Elephant? I am growing 4 varieties and some Elephant can't wait to judge the flavours. What is your favourite variety?
All Garlic will produce bulbils but may appear on the heads of normal garlic. My favourite variety is Provence
