You really made my home state look so beautiful. Thank you for showing coal country with such respect. It is easy to look at the poverty in our state and discount the people and beauty, but you presented both with dignity. The history included was so interesting and accurate, including things I didn't know. Thank you for showing the Coal Miner's Memorial, a few of those names were family, and I appreciate the honor you showed those brave men, women, and their families. I can't wait to see more of this series! It's like watching a motion picture of my home! ! Beautifully shot, beautifully edited, great sound quality. So impressed, loved it!! Ohhh, and now I want a dozen of those Korean pork kimchi tacos from Black Sheep!!! LOL!!! Jeana sure knows where to find good food.
You are welcome, Angie! It's the least I could do for hard working men risking their lives going underground every day, filling their lungs with coal dust, and the women that supported them. As we move to a more renewable energy future in this country, their contributions cannot be denied. And this memorial, I learned, is but one. Next up, an educational and inspiring interview with Lori Bowling!
Kaye Kittrell | Late Bloomer Urban Organic Garden Show that video was so moving, it made me cry!! I sent it out to my whole family, and they loved it too. Great great video!
Start on the Cumberland Plateau and end on the Allegheny Plateau, with Ashland, Ky. on the the same western Allegheny geological feature as Pittsburgh, Pa .
And the nomination goes to .. Kaye Kittrell for best picture, production, editing and sound effect! Kaye, you really did well on this video. The information provided about Kentucky is very factual, informative and educational. This is why I really love your travel videos. When are you planning to visit VA, DC, and MD -- the beltway?
Jupe367 that’s a good question. You know I have before but I guess you didn’t contact me so I didn’t know to stop and see you. It’s not looking like I’m going to be able to make it this season because I’ve got three trips planned but takes me till the end of September and I think gardens repeat be pretty much done by then over there. Where are you anyway? Is that what you had in mind? And I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your comment. From your words to gods years but somebody realizes what I have to offer. If I only had a crew they’d be 10 times better. I literally made that video not counting the hours traveling in shooting in 12 hours.
I'm in MD. Hope to meet you one day in the future when you head to the east again. This is truly a cliffhanger. I can't wait to see the next video of this trip.
When I was a girl and my family moved to KY ~25 years ago, you would see easily a hundred coal trucks in an hour drive (we used to count them back when they were a novelty to us). Now there are only a few. Those hills of coal near Huntington used to be huge! I live an hour southeast of Huntington and it is one of our monthly-ish 'got to get to the city/going stir-crazy' destinations. Hope you're enjoying your vacation!
Thanks, Jill! This is first in a series, with much more to come. We jammed as much into three days as possible. I hope you will be along for the whole ride! 100 trucks in an hour, wow. That would have been hard to live near.
Thanks, Charles! You will appreciate the next installment, an educational and inspiring interview with the head of the Boyd County Extension office. xx
As you know, Kaye is so much fun to be around; gracious, funny, and sharp as a tack! We had such a great time with her here in Ashland : )) Btw, love OAG!
I know! That's why after I passed it, I went back to get a shot of it. That big white building is no doubt the gymnasium where that famous "Mr. Basketball" (on the sign) played. All closed up. No money to renovate or even tear it down. It stands as a monument to a time gone by. I can imagine lots of school kids running up those stairs.
I know! I remember we talked about that!! Thanks for watching! The next installment is an interview with the head of the Boyd County Extension office, very interesting
Thanks for watching! Next up is an interview with the Boyd County Extension office about the current state of gardening and farming and all the good that office provides.
Thanks Nancy! Please share. Coal is a undeniable part of history, as we move to a more renewable energy future. The next installment is an educational and inspiring interview with the head of the Boyd County Extension Office. Don't miss! She's amazing!
It is a beautiful country firstly I saw through movie of chilwil cantaki rifles now it is deferent no wagons no horses no Comanches no Hilly tracks but modern highways what a change of time thanks for beautiful vloge and informations
Reminds me of Elizabethtown the movie and I use to live in Elizabethtown Kentucky for about a year. I still think I should have stayed there. It's one of the decisions I still think about and wish I could . it's a small town but very nice place. It was a dry county not sure if it still is. The Memorial memories is a bit sad you were very thoughtful of its importance.
What a wonderful video and very touching. I had forgotten the past of coal mining and the towns it created, also learning history I wasn't aware of, thank you Kaye. Seeing the memorial was sad but yet powerful. The countryside is gorgeous and was surprised at how few farms you passed on your trip through the area, I hollered once..."stop Kaye I want to see the farm". Lol!! I am a woman born and bred in the northwest, so your trips to other states, especially the southern states is really fantastic, I get to see so much. You always seem to touch my heart. :-)
Thank you so much, Jean!! Please share this one. Because I can't tag and describe it with "gardening" it's slow to get views, but so important. Wyoming is also a big source of coal, but that happened much later. Kentucky is where it all began, and even though we must move to a renewable energy future, the risk and sacrifice these men and their wives made leaves an indelible mark on our nation's history and development and cannot be denied. This is Part 1 of a series. #2 is coming Friday, an educational and inspiring interview with Lori Bowling at the County Extension office about farming and gardening issues in the area. She is an amazing woman!!
Beautiful! I love the music you chose for this video. Just perfect. You gotta love those curves and the beautiful mountains. Makes me so happy to be back home here in East TN❤
This is a beautiful tribute to a hard-working people! I remember meeting the Manns, the Mayles, the Manards, and a few Blankenships in Columbus, OH. I sold family portraits in the Huntington, WVA grocery store, they claim Billy Ray Cyrus. I smile when I see these names in Metros like Los Angeles:-) These families came from a solid heritage. I see all the weeds and think oh they could scatter so much Swamp Milkweed there:-) I have a bedroom full and still finding eggs in remote places of course on the smallest plants. I am also looking forward to the next Coal Country video!
Oh, thank you, Portia! Part 2 is an educational interview with an inspiring agent at the Boyd County Extension Office. Remarkable all the good she does and I don't even get a chance to mention that the Farmer's Market we went to the next day, she runs it. She was so overextended, I couldn't ask her to give up her Saturday morning to meet us there.
Well, funny you should mention it, I was going to surprise you when I actually make my plans but I have to fly into St. Louis to go and visit Doug and Stacy. I'll let you know if I get it planned.
A good video, Kaye. It makes one think of all the fine people that lost their lives through collapsing or explosions in the coal tunnels. Well researched and a well-produced video. I can only imagine what it must have been like digging with a pick at the coal face with a lot of dust and unclean air, Cheers for now xx Patrick
Hi Kaye! OUTSTANDING Video!! Wish you could made more vlogs through every states ;) Everything in the video, music, editing is so awesome. Thanks for sharing, appreciate the effort , also you look gorgeous :) ♥♥♥

Okay, Jack. I will keep that in mind if I ever get back over to Washington. In the meantime, if you have a camera or a smart phone, please take two or three sharp HORIZONTAL pictures of your garden, one with you in it, if that's okay with your parents, and I'll share it in a future video. I always want to encourage young people to garden! You can get my email address from the contact page on my website. My website link is on the home page on my channel or in the description under any video. Okay?

Beautiful country and those miners had a hard life💛
Very true. Thanks so much for watching! Please share. I'm not getting a lot of views and this sets up the series to follow. Many thanks!

You are welcome! This sets up the series, so I hope more people see it. Many thanks, sis!
I don't why but that abandoned high school gave me goose bumps. Great video!

I loved the show "Justified". It was my favorite show on tv.
