Dark lyrics like, from Ozzy's "No More Tears" - "Maybe a kiss before I leave you this way. Your lips are so cold, I don't know what else to say"... serial killer thoughts.
this may be hyperbole but just on the strength of this song (and that sublime line about filing her nails) Elvis costello's place in the annals of rock history was cemented...he never had to write another song.
In 1978, I borrowed this album along with Talking Heads '77 and Patty Smith Radio Ethiopia from someone who was later arrested for armed bank robbery (with a fake gun). I ended up never having the opportunity to give these albums back. They are still in my vinyl collection.
This album came out my freshman year in high school. The sound was so different compared to stadium rock. The songwriting, his vocals, his look, the musicianship. Brilliant.
Love BT, but the original version was: Personnel - Elvis Costello - vocals, guitar Andrew Bodnar - bass Steve Goulding - drums Steve Nieve - piano, organ The rhythm section for The Rumour played on the studio version. One of my favorite backing pieces of music ever. And I LOVE The Attractions too.
Heard this on the radio yesterday in sunny ol Perth, Western Australia for the first time in donkey years. I had to listen to it again, so here I am. Just perfect ,Mr.Costello
This is unquestionably one of the tightest, best written and executed pop songs of all time! Elvis had a top-notch band and his vocals are absolutely amazing. So cool the way the whole band keeps ratcheting up the tension of the lyrics, from the angst in Elvis' voice to the overdriven and tremolo guitar parts and sensational drumming, all anchored by a really groovy reggae riff. Funny, as he was marketed as a nerdy, new-wave oddball - but E and the Attractions FAR superseded their pitched genre and time!
I think it's fair to say Elvis Costello was essentially a nerdy new wave oddball. Reggae was an influence on English new wave. But it's true he transcended genres, as did many of the leading artists of that punk/post-punk era. Not just EC, but Joe Jackson, Paul Weller, The Stranglers, Ed Kuepper, a bit later Icehouse. Even to an extent Mick Jones of The Clash/Big Audio Dynamite and John Lydon.
+Mike Luke: "The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents/Who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance." Dick Wolf made a FORTUNE off of that.
I have a hard time thinking of anyone from which he drew influence. Perhaps Sinatra, but only just barely. Early Bruce Springsteen? A hint of Dylan in his wry lyrics.
Brilliant story teller, singer, songwriter, performing artist, and producer. Saw recently Elvis Costello is credited for producing The Specials debut album...did not know that...amazing talent for sure!
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.............
Elvis Costello is 10 years older than I am. I was 13 when this whole album, my aim is true came out, I got the album then the cassette later when I started driving so I could listen to it in the car. Now I have a copy of the CD still. You always wondered what this song was really about, we didn't have Google back in the day so we had to use our imaginations. Imaginations are powerful and I honestly believe that access to easy quick information without using your critical thinking is doing us all in Injustice, especially the youth who will never how to use their imaginations like we did.. I am a last year baby boomer first year Gen X hybrid, really time to be a kid and a young adult.... So all these years we've had ideas of what this song is about and many different interpretations. We've read and heard the idea that this is about a young girl hanging out with an older guy and that when the police come looking for her at his home, he ends up doing away with her. Nice and dark, right? Then there is the other interpretation which makes more sense and they are Elvis Costello's own words albeit vague. It's about Noir detective TV shows back in the 50s, the lyrics are nail biters in suspenseful, such as Longshots at that jumping sign, above a hotel the blinking lights, invisible Shivers run down my spine cut to baby taking off her clothes, under the sign that says we never close And then of course one of the greatest song lines ever created, she's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake. Per the interpretation of wow vinyl which is about the first interpretation of the young girl with the older man, she is filing her nails watching the detectives looking for her. In the second interpretation where the point of view of a man whose lover just wants to watch detectives on tv, oh he's so cute, rather than be with the man you can imagine her filing her nails while watching the TV detectives saying how cute he is The last couple of lines of the song goes from she's watching The Detectives then it just goes to it's just like watching The Detectives, almost in a first person since I hope this makes sense because I'm blind as hell and voice texting, there are lots of missing punctuation. Anyway, I just found this video I'd never seen it before and you couldn't find a more perfect way to put a visual to this song, one of the greatest songs of all time I don't care who you are,lol.. it's freaking brilliant. I love how they use that clip from The Little Rascals also known as our gang, three of The Little Rascals going through the Funhouse ride with the moving saw coming at them, they put their hands over their throats like it's going to protect them😂😂😂😂. I totally remember that episode watching it when I was a kid. Those were from the fifties as well and still very popular when I was a kid in the 6 mid 60s early 70s Great comments on here, thanks to everyone. Elvis Costello is just one of the greatest

This man is simply a musical genius! All of his songs are top notch, so sophisticated, so much saying and meaningful, touching every person to their soul. Thank you!
Saw him at Montreal jazz festival at newly renovated theatre shortly before joining his wife who was headlining outside. Played an acoustic show, what a guitar player, sang off mike for “Shipbuilding”, his voice filled this huge space. Still shiver when I remember.
I remember reading the centre pages story in my copy of 'Sounds' music newspaper travelling north on the train August 1977 and without even hearing him, being enthralled and yes his first album 'My Aim is True' was phenomenal, all early Costello/ Attractions output is original and timeless.

EC is a genius lyricist, poet and musician (vocalist/guitarist) who is able to meld other music genres so effortlessly while minting his unique style. This track (1977) utilises the Ska/Reggae sound syncopation and predates many artists including those of the huge wave of 2 Tone Records tracks that were to come ('79 & '80s). 'Watching The Detectives': I could easily imagine Ranking Roger's "Brrrruuuuuaaaah!" timely exuberance in the background. Also, compare the distinctive drumroll of 'Ranking Full Stop', The Beat (1979). Our Elvis still rocks!
Elvis Costello, you have the most beautiful voice!!! I listened to your tapes when I lived in S.F years ago, while walking to work. You are an amazing artist! I am listening to you right now in 2017 as I am having a mom break which I never have so I am rocking out right now to all my fav, artists of the 80's at my computer !!!! Thank-you for all your great music through the years, it means alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got here rewatching Elementary” the Sherlock Holmes show. Episode 1 ends with this tune. It suddenly stops when Mr. Miller turns off the light switch. Very cool!
"She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake" is one of the most evocative lines in pop.
You're right, John. But don't forget about when Elvis said, "overwhelmed by indifference and the promise of an early bed." That was amusing as well.
his lyrics with the compositions in most of his songs are genius
reminds me of my mother when she was watching murder mysteries on TV lol
Dark lyrics like, from Ozzy's "No More Tears" - "Maybe a kiss before I leave you this way. Your lips are so cold, I don't know what else to say"... serial killer thoughts.
this may be hyperbole but just on the strength of this song (and that sublime line about filing her nails) Elvis costello's place in the annals of rock history was cemented...he never had to write another song.
It’s amazing how an incredible song remains timeless.
"She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake." It kills me every time.
Me, too.
pretty good....
Was 12 yrs old when my big brother played this 4 me! ❤❤❤ Now he's 63 and I'm 58! Love you, big brother. ❤❤❤
Yep my big sis is 8 years old than me and would play this when I was a kid too lol 😊
I'm his age you gotta' cool as shit big brother.😁
Thanks Carl! I do have a cool as shit big brother! Two of them actually!!! 😊❤
he is 70
He's one of the most gifted lyricists in pop music history. Bloody brilliant.
In 1978, I borrowed this album along with Talking Heads '77 and Patty Smith Radio Ethiopia from someone who was later arrested for armed bank robbery (with a fake gun). I ended up never having the opportunity to give these albums back. They are still in my vinyl collection.
Now you have to find him, and buy him a ticket for a concert.
2 tickets, 1 for him and 1 for you!!!
What was the bank robbery? 😭
This album came out my freshman year in high school. The sound was so different compared to stadium rock. The songwriting, his vocals, his look, the musicianship. Brilliant.
ditto
That bassline is amazing.
BT's basslines are always fecking awesome
Love BT, but the original version was:
Personnel -
Elvis Costello - vocals, guitar
Andrew Bodnar - bass
Steve Goulding - drums
Steve Nieve - piano, organ
The rhythm section for The Rumour played on the studio version. One of my favorite backing pieces of music ever. And I LOVE The Attractions too.
Check out his song 'mood for moderns', also has amazing bassline
Heard this on the radio yesterday in sunny ol Perth, Western Australia for the first time in donkey years. I had to listen to it again, so here I am. Just perfect ,Mr.Costello
Hello there fellow Aussie , from Sydney . This certainly is perfect ! xxx

My favorite EC song. That chord progression is killer.
MONSTER BASS too!
One of the greatest songwriters of all time. This is pulp fiction folks.
+Mike Luke: "The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents/Who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance." Dick Wolf made a FORTUNE off of that.
Its a dead heat with Oliver's Army.
@@JKTube I like the way you think.
This has some of the best percussion riffs in any Costello tune.
I was 16 when this came out... still one of the greatest songs ever
I was roughly the same age, and I still laugh when I listen to it. 💜
I think his first hit ' love the old footage used for the video ' Sherlock Holmes eg.
Me too , unfortunately I never got to see him
I am afraid that this contribution "may have involved some non-sequitur."
This is the song I love
it never gets old. weed, coffee and this song.
He's a wordsmith,a troubador...is what I wanted to be.
Film noir and punk.
You can't get cooler than that. 🐻❄️
His best work
#agoodyearfortheroses
"Closeup of the sign that says "We never close"". "She pulls their eyes out with a face like a magnet"...
So many great lines.
Gotta be one of the best lyricists EVER
He sure did some great music ' this ' Olivers army ' I don 't wan go to Chelsea ' and Every day I write the book are my favs of his.
loved it when reggae met punk in 70s and 80s
Right! You got some more examples? :)
Try listening to The Clash, The Police and The Ruts.
or the Beat, Selecter, Specials; hell, just goog "New Wave"!
You're kidding right?
Bob Marley’s Punky Reggae Party.
The third verse packs so much rhyme. It almost feels like he's rapping.
I agree, this song is a freaking classic! I love Elvis Costeo!!
"My Aim Is True" is one of my Top 5 albums of all time.
But this is off 'This years model'.
@@humandroid53: No, it was always on "My Aim Is True."
My aim is true. Of course.
Can't believe I forgot about this one - my favorite when I was in high school, 1978
”… she’s filing her nails while they’re dragging in the lake …”
I really don't know why but I have always liked that illusory wording.
The way he raps the third verse is just masterful songwriting; you can feel the tension building all the way until it climaxes with "blow you away."
Totally!!
The first "New Wave" album I bought. I was totally into this. Wore it out. To this day, it's still one of the best songs and album ever made.
All his stuff is brilliant.
Best bassline. Ever.
The reason I liked Elvis Costello was because he didn't really sound like anybody else. And no-one since really sounds like him.
I have a hard time thinking of anyone from which he drew influence. Perhaps Sinatra, but only just barely. Early Bruce Springsteen? A hint of Dylan in his wry lyrics.
Ears Of Velvet: I have no idea what that means, but it made me laugh.
I just found out about him and his stuff sounds so ahead of his time, this sounds like it could’ve been released today.
Graham Parker is good too, I like his Squeezing out Sparks album the best.
like most it was buddy holly

I'm 34 now, elvis costello has been my favourite artist since I was 14. I've seen him 4 times each time amazing. This song is one of his best ❤
This was my motivation to learn to play the bass guitar, back in 1977.
Strange, same with me, but in 79/80.
MrChannel2013 Did you stay with it?
Andy Bodnar is one great bassist.
Still going strong ?????!
@@hottestbabe1000 the said bass is in pieces in the cellar :-(
Covered this song in Dual, it’s another all time favorite!! ♥️♥️♥️
The 1st 23 seconds of this song personifies what highly skilled musicians can do.. Bass player/drummer and guitarist just nailed this intro..
As my guitar teacher said "You have four beats in four bars to hook them before they swim away".
Always love the punchy sounding intro to this ' he is a musical genius ' his own punk style just rocks.
Elvis Costello - vocals, guitar
Andrew Bodnar - bass
Steve Goulding - drums
Steve Nieve - piano, organ
Absolutely amazing.
Class IS Permanent!🌹❤️👌🏴👊🏽

Driving my kids to grade school they made me play this every morning. The little rascals
Finally, an EC video that doesn't suck.
he's such a great songwriter - this is a classic.
I could just listen to this song everyday I live please.... nobody sounds like him ❤️❤️❤️💋
Melissa: listen away! You're right: great song.
Dunno why, but this song just makes me HAPPY !!! BRIAN from Western Sydney.
Saw this the other day on one of these compilation shows...like the old black and white clips from the movies...
Music of a week spent youth.

💓 Lyrics :
Nice girls, not one with a defect
Cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct
Red dogs under illegal legs
She looks so good that he gets down and begs
She is watching the detectives
"Ooh, it's so cute"
She's watching the detectives
When they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart
Long shot of that jumping sign
Invisible shivers running down my spine
Cut to baby taking off her clothes
Close-up of the sign that says: "We never close"
You snatch a chill and you match a cigarette
She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet
I don't know how much more of this I can take
She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake
She is watching the detectives
"Oh, he's so cute"
She is watching the detectives
Oh, and they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart
You think you're alone until you realize you're in it
Now baby's here to stay, love is here for a visit
They call it instant justice when it's past the legal limit
Someone's scratching at the window, I wonder, who is it?
The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents
Who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance
Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay
It only took my little fingers to blow you away
Just like watching the detectives
Don't get cute
Just like watching the detectives
I get so angry when the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart
Watching the detectives
It's just like watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
We're watching the detectives
They're watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
Thanks ! 👍🙂

I remember having an official VHS tape of Elvis Costello music videos and this was my favourite

finest singer/songwriter of his generation , saw him at RCH Nottingham last year , still a great gig !

so flippin saucy
Um ótimo disco essa estréia dele!
Saw him/them twice in concert in Malmö, Sweden. Just after the release of This year’s model, and then a year or two later. Great memories
The stuff I have stored inside my head amazes me.
Great song.
Classic.
One of the greatest crossover songs of all time 🙏🎧🙏
Gets better as the years pass
One of the miracles of popular music.
Still a fan of his since I was a teen in the mid 80s 😁 ❤
This song/album put Elvis in the hall of fame of song writers ..great tune

Why I LOVE the DRUMS 🥊🥊
Another sizzling great Elvis Costello tune!!!
Elvis Costello the best musician in the world , that much so a great majority of the world has never even heard of him.
Just one of the coolest things ever.
It was also used as the theme for the PBS series "History Detectives".

it seems like this is what sublime wanted to sound like in alot of their songs, only this sounds way better and less corny.
Digging that Reggae beat..!
LOVE this song to this day 💕
Got here rewatching Elementary” the Sherlock Holmes show. Episode 1 ends with this tune. It suddenly stops when Mr. Miller turns off the light switch. Very cool!
Elvis was / is some unique musician
What an artist!
For me personally, your finest work :) Not to forget Oliver.
Great song, of course - had never seen the video before - love it😊
