- This seems like a simple question, take two skyscrapers, like the petronas towers in Malaysia or the Sears Tower (Willis Tower) in Chicago and tell me which one is taller? But this questions has been dividing people for decades. #shorts #architecture

Sears is obviously taller. Otherwise buildings could just add ridiculously long spires on top to be taller. It should be the top of the main structure.

The Shanghai Tower just got pushed back to 3rd place because of the Merdeka 118 which is again, in Malaysia 🤦🏻 Shanghai Tower is a bit taller with more floors. They definitely shouldn't count Spires, but technically you can go into a spire as opposed to antennas which is why I think they count

Edit: 1. Of course it has to be touching the building.
2. Yes if you just place balloons touching the top of the building it’s taller.

1. Tallest by architectural height (the most important measurement)
2. Tallest by highest occupied floor
3. Tallest to tip
So it isn't just simply as how high the building goes

As a Chicago native I'm more outraged that it's no longer the Sears Tower.
There was a planned building called "the Illinois" that would be by far the largest in the world. There are blueprints for it and everything they just never built it.

The United States actually has a maximum 2,000 ft max height for any structure. Probably lobbied by the FAA at some point... So until that changes, there is no chance the US can exceed the Burj Khalifa.

I'm a Chicagoian too, and I grew up on Sears Tower, too, but once Sears died, thank God, and willis took it. Besides, I don't really count the eiffel tower as a building really, since it's not a structure that's used regularly by people. I mean, how many occupyable floors does it have? If any, whats the highest floor?
Of course I recognize that the eiffel tower IS a building by definition. But honestly, I was referring to the left building in the short.
There should be 2 categories.
1. Tallest building measured by highest floor or balcony
2. Tallest structure which would include all parts of the structure to see which is taller

If you're going to count removable objects as the height of a building, I could literally have two identical (in height) buildings next to each other, stand on the roof, and claim the one I'm standing on is higher, because "the top of my head is above the roof of the other building".

@@FiftyStates5 The building’s offices are leased out to various companies - the Sears company had the naming rights of the building included in their lease, and when they moved out the naming rights was transferred to the Willis Group (another tenant). Of course, nobody actually acknowledges the name change even if that’s what it’s called on paper.

The tallest used floor matters.
If it isn't used, it has no need to be there, and is just extra.
But since we counted the whatchamacallits, it seems like the tallest permanently attached part of a building matters.
Otherwise counting the antennas you might as well count the air that rests on the building too. Occupied floor is all that matters.

Used and occupied are two different things. A building can have a large room with super high ceilings in the top, it's still very much part of the building even though it's not occupied. Or it could have unoccupied space for building equipment, like HVAC, and it's still part of the building.

The spikes on top shouldn’t count towards length at all. If we are, then I 100% agree that the other tower is taller since it’s permanent. It’s like counting hair towards height and not counting someone’s because they wear a wig. HOWEVER, hair shouldn’t count towards height, so yea.

As a Malaysian i can assure you this is how we build tall buildings 😂 same goes with the Merdeka 118 tower (2nd tallest building in the world) with a pole that's like 100m tall at the top edging over the Shanghai tower by about 37 metres lmao

Apparently the trick is just to have a non detachable compartment in your tower for it to be part of the building
The fin spines on the Petronas Towers are of architectural design. It looks more natural than the sears tower

The highest usable floor or flat roof section should count as the highest point for the purpose of height records. If you can comfortably/safely stand there then that's the point to measure to.
