Just got my 2020 Evora GT delivered today. (2,300 mile on it.) Watched a dealer video, and he answered all these issues. The gas cap he said to press not on the side with the latch, but the side with the hinge. The battery charger should have the trunk closed on it to charge properly. And the trunk doesn’t seem to have any issues with my year, but I like what another commenter said about tightening the locking mechanism, or adjusting the rubber stoppers to create some tension to cause it to pop up. Hope this helps some folks. :)
Quick tip for the trunk and the battery tender. I used to be a lotus sales specialist in NewEngland. In order to make sure the alarm doesn’t go off( constant beeping) so you can lock the car and not drain the battery, just use the key blade and push up on the inside of the latch lock mechanism to engage it. Then you can close the trunk by resting it back down and still be able to lock the vehicle. This also ensures you don’t potentially damage the wires for the battery tender. Have more tips for the vehicle and its quirks if you need any! Love the car in UltraViolet!
You can set the trunk latch when it's open to make it think it's closed so the light goes out. Just remember to trip the latch back open before you close the trunk lid. Also, there are 2 rubbers either side of the trunk lid, wind them out and it'll open correctly each time.
I have a 2017 Lotus Evora 400 with 25k miles on it. No problems with the gas cap. Battery never die so far so good. Got the car brand new. Love it so far so good.
I reckon the gas cap closing is just the fuel lid cord getting in the way of the mechanism, when you screw it back on just do it so the cable isn’t with the hinge of gas cap 🤗
My dad owned a 2012 lotus evora, it was a fun car but we had the same problem about the battery. We left the car in the garage for a couple of weeks and it ran out of battery, it kind of annoying because normal cars battery would last forever except our Lotus. We contacted the lotus service center and they solved our problem by putting a battery switch, so when we know that we are not going to drive the car for a long period of time we would switch the battery off.
The trunk is an easy fix - unscrew the rubber stoppers on either side of the lid. Mine had to be almost all the way out. It opens every time with the FOB or the button in the door. The charger - just close the lid on the cable. I’ve been doing it for years on my old Evora and now on the 400. Super easy. The gas lid - check to be sure the cable that attaches to the gas cap is not in the way of the little plunger that locks the lid closed. Try a little WD40 or grease on the pin maybe if that doesn’t work. Your engine redline issue is the rev limiter - it saves you from blowing your motor. If you aren’t hearing anything from your sub, it’s either the fuse to it or the amp itself most likely. Mine didn’t work when I got it and I’m still waiting on a new amp from Lotus. No biggie - but I’m lucky to have a dealer that’s only 15 miles from my house. Hope this helps!
You’ve had this car for 3 months and have yet to use sports mode ? 😳 /Boggle... Oh my dear friend, you’re doing it wrong ! Yes, leave race mode for the track but you’re missing out if you haven’t tried it during spirited drives. I have a highly modified Evora S that I adore. Yes, there ALWAYS seems to be at least 3 annoying but not catastrophic problems ongoing... these problems are fixed only to be supplanted by other annoying problems but this is part of the love affair with a hand built, small volume British sports cars 😏. The trunk lid issue is well known. The easiest solution to the most common cause for this, after insuring that the locking mechanism itself isn’t loose (often the case that this needs tightening up), is to adjust the rubber stoppers such that when you close the trunk lid it is under slight tension. This means that you will have to adjust such that it takes a moderate amount of force to close the trunk. When the solenoid is tripped and the lock opens, the energy stored in the compressed rubber stoppers will be enough to pop the trunk open consistently. Ehem... and as always , the Lotus Talk forums is an invaluable resource with an enthusiastic and helpful community. Nice color, BTW. Welcome to the cult of LOTUS !
Call me crazy, but I just had my 2020 Evora GT delivered this am, and am already in “Race” mode. I won’t be doing anything silly…just yet, but soon enough. Lol. Definitely try “Sport” and see if you (OP) like it. :)
Hi, my 400 has a glass rear panel, the trunk release doesn’t always release first time, but another press of the button always releases ok. I don’t drive it every day so I keep a battery conditioner plugged in. The cable is routed over the seal then via the slot at the edge of the engine cover. The trunk shuts with the cable connected. My fuel filler cap has always shut first time. I have completed approaching four thousand miles now and my enthusiasm for this car remains high. I have always been a Lotus enthusiast, this is my third. All the best
I have a 2022 Evora GT as well, and have the same issues with the trunk. Thought it was me, so glad to know it isn't. Have not had problems with gas tank lid. The way the bucket seats hug you takes some getting used to. Took my wife out for a cup of coffee - not a good idea 🙂.... she had to cradle the drink all the way home - cup holder is shallow. If that is the worst of it - I'm a happy camper!
I’m about 6 weeks into ownership of a 2017... 2-3 weeks without charger should be fine. No carbon fiber... I like the window personally to see the engine. Other than tire pressure sensor needing reset... no other issues. I drive almost solely in sport... shifts are faster, holds higher rpm. Join Lotus Talk if you haven’t yet... many DIY people there for advice.
You said you had to reset the tire pressure sensor needed to be reset. I just looked at my manual and can't find a button. How do you reset the Tire pressure?
If you have a passenger you've decided the best place for them to go is the passenger seat. I can't believe I've been putting mine in the boot all these years...
I own a GT410 with carbon trunk. Yes , the trunk needs a few tries to open, but always has after a while. I miss the previous gas struts. I recommend closing down the trunk over the wires of the charger when leaving the car on the charger for long periods , just slam the trunk over them, does not seem to damage and worry the alarm. Do use the charger, experience with a previous 400 and a flat battery was horrendous with the alarm system and the ignition key going out of control. No problem with the cheap gas cap though.
The third button on the key will open it easily. Press the open center button and the front door opens. Press it again and the passenger door opens. The electronics drain the battery. Use the charger every day when you're not using it. Lubricant will eliminate the trunk issue.
For the fuel cap thing: the catch isn't where you think it is, it's actually on the side close to the hinge. If you push there you should find it closes more easily :)
Push the cap filler cover down on the hinge side. Seems counter intuitive, but that's how to do it. Also, you can latch the trunk with the charger plugged in.
Wow, love that colour! You can shut the tailgate with the wire connected. The rubber seal allows room for the wire. It needs to be all the way shut for the trunk light to go off.
I have one and haven’t experienced any of these problems. Lotus isn’t known for it’s reliability, however with the Toyota engine and transmission along with some other common components I’m confident the reliability as well as durability will meet most expectations.
The charger wire must be kept in the crack of the left seam and press down on the center of the trunk lid until it clicks closed. Add lubricant to the trunk lock and there won't be a problem opening it. Press the gas cap cover on the other side where it hinges, and it will close every time. The radio sucks. The charger should be placed on the car every day when it's locked away for the night.
Hi, I have a glass back Evora 400 2016 and had a problem opening the boot with the remote but was then told by the dealer to always press the door open button twice and then the boot button in that order and I haven’t had a problem since.
There's several small LED lights you could buy and just velcro into that trunk, a few even have motion detection. Would last many months of daily use too with a lithium rechargeable battery.
I went to Australia for 3 weeks and to my surprise the car did start fine when I tried. When I charge the battery, I can close the trunk on it without any issue. The boot lid open well first time around every time when I open it with the key. The emergency tailgate release is more problematic as someone need to open it during the time I pull the cable. Fuel trap also works perfectly so I think you need to adjust both. There is a meaningful difference between normal and sport in terms of the car pulling.
You have to press the center of the trunk lid down until it clicks locked. The charger wire slides through the gap on the side of the trunk then click the trunk closed by pressing gently on the center of the black wing. The trunk opens every time. Use a lubricant on the trunk lock and no more issues will exist. The gas tank lid must be closed from the top where the inner joint attaches to the clip not the other side. Common sense, close the lid and press the joint latch area it closes every time. You're pushing down on the wrong end of the lid. You should have first found a dealership that repairs the Evora before purchasing it. My 2020 Evora GT is fantastic. I keep it on charge every night. No issues with the charger in place nightly. Press the second key button twice to open the passenger door and the third button a few times for the trunk to be unlatched.
Do a track day. Scca track night in America. Best $160 I've ever spent. Most fun you will ever have in a car w your clothes on.....even that's debatable. My first event, at pocono, in paddock next to a new GT3rs, both of us running beginner class. This doctor tells me his car is just too fast to truly experience on the street so he brought it here. Extremely well organized, safe way to push your car as fast/hard as you want...or not. Go at your own pace. In my $5,000 BMW i crushed the doctor through the road course because he was just taking it easy but when we hit the Outfield he eased down on the go pedal and was gone :-)
Thanks for the video. The issues you have are not serious but can def get annoying really fast. I am actually facing the decision between a Lotus Emira or a Cayman.(Hopefully a GTS). I love the exclusivity of the Lotus but I think the Cayman may be a safer play. I guess me saving grace if I go with the Lotus I have a Lotus dealership 6 miles down the road from me.
It s just little problems......but this car is so fantastic to drive. Got 5 porsche before my first lotus evora.... Mine is solar yellow !!!!! And i love it. But yours !!!!! GREAT !!!!!!!
FYI on two of the problems you have: - The subwoofer is disabled by default, strangely. You can turn it on from the head unit settings. - I had the stuck gas door problem for a brief moment before realizing it was the fuel cap cable getting stuck in the hinge.
my 2010 lotus evora has been sitting for months in cold weather with no battery problem. The trunk never popped though, I have to lift it as it unlocks. The hydraulic doesn't push at all but at least they keep it open - if I lift it just right ;-)
You got off easy! I saw the dash warp up on some when left in the sun. As well as even more electrical issues... But hey it's British! They really know racing but have very little clue on electricity 🔌
My trunk is not carbon fibre and it opens first time, every time. I’ve also left my car for longer than 7 days without any battery issues and I have a working light in my trunk. I don’t have the gas flap problem either.
Gorgeous car, especially with the purple and carbon fiber. Very few cars these days have spare tires or jacks. And a rev limiter is equally common. I doubt you’d ‘destroy’ the car if you took it to the track. You should try it, just choose a good safe track day group, with an instructor. And join Lotus Talk. Lots of owners there who can answer questions.
The trunk does not open always With the gas tank no problems so far The subwoofer I do not know if it works, hahaha I have a problem with my seat it seems to "jingle" on corners 20 days and battery did not die on me however I would not do that a second time. But 2 weeks is a go after that you are playing 50/50 The front cap for fluids does not close properly .... One of the reverse light does not work and its not supposed to...fashion looks item.... Take care!
Let me guess, you're a first time Lotus owner. I've owned Lotuses for over 30 years, and all have a minor problem or two - none of which got in the way of the driving experience. I think you're missing the point of a Lotus - drive it! And you haven't tried sport or track modes yet? Sad... want to loan it to me?
Boot lid closing is a shame - maybe it’s weight, mines got the glass and it has been 100% reliable. Wonder if the mechanism has changed as well? Maybe it has, along with rubber the boot seal as I can close my boot lid just fine with trickle charger plugged in. Are the boot bulbs LED? I changed mine as it’s a brighter light, but may also help with reducing power drain.... Anyway, such a stunning car, really glad you’re enjoying it 😃
I would think a lot of maintenance is something a Toyota dealer could do because it is a supercharged Camry engine and they use a beefed Toyota transmission also.
The car will not drain the battery if you use the key fob to lock the car, and then hit it a second time where you hear the chirp from the security system. In that mode, it will not drain the battery.
Still very intrigued by the Evora. The bloated price tag and high depreciation on the new Porsche Turbo S's has me consider Evora again. I do like unique vehicles. By the way, contact your local Toyota dealer.. Lotus partnered with the Toyota for the engine, they might be able to service it. Guess I just need to drive both. I'm leaning towards the Porsche mainly because I want to use it for longer comfortable Sports Touring trips and Track days.
You mentioned longer trips, I have a 2020 Evora GT bought it while working in Indiana. When the job was finished I drove it from Indiana to Colorado springs. Then flew back to get my truck an RV. Then I drove it out to Washington state to license it. And then drove it up to South Dakota to tour the Black hills and have some fun with it. 9000 miles in less than 6 mounts. So I will personally say it's good for long trips very comfortable. Never sat in a Porsche so couldn't compare.
Try this link. My stereo was not set up at all from factory and this improved it a lot. I have a different Alpine head unit but settings are still right. www.thelotusforums.com/forums/topic/80176-evora-400-audio-setup-guide/#comment-625636
well its a cheap battery, to small or lotus has a elect draw. Many race tracks require a quick disconnect for the battery ( switch on the outside of the car )that would stop the battery draw.
Yes in a manual car when you hit the red-line it will feel like hitting a wall. This is normal. Not a fault. All manual cars are like this. I'm actually stunned anybody is surprised by this :/ How long have you had a drivers license?
Nothing that can be done about it, but my big issue with the Evora is that it weighs over 600 lbs more than an Exige with the same horsepower. Such a bummer for a car that was known for its lightweight performance. I guess it doesn’t matter anymore because they’ve stolen that from us anyway since it’s going out of production.
You have to ask yourself what did a lightweight car get lotus? Bankruptcy? Even though some purists do not agree with lotuses move to build SUVs it is the right decision to keep them in business. Now going all electric is stupid
There is an inside security sensor when the alarm is turned on that causes the battery to wear out if not left on a charger. I have a 2021 GT and neither Gas cap or Trunk are an issue. You can close the trunk with the battery tender on or you can reroute the battery tender cable to come out the diffuser and charge it from there, removing the trunk out of the equation.
My EVORA driver mirror vibrat when I speed over 100, also I can't adjust it to the perfect way compare to the sitting position!, I asked the dealer they told me all the Evoras like this.
@@v317865 let me know if u find a good place for service. I’ve been doing my own oil and fluid changes. I have a lift so it’s not been hard but I am so meticulous that it takes me a full day to do what a professional could do in an hour.
I hope that they add a Lotus dealer in the DC market. Criswell used to sell them, but no longer. Hard to believe that in such an affluent area you can’t buy or service a Lotus.
@@Rex_Racer I agree and the Bethesda Mercedes/Lotus dealer also closed. U would think any of the many Volvo dealers would b ideal, given that they r both owned by Geely
doesn't this car use a toyota engine? pretty sure the 2gr fe are bullet proof so engine reliability should be fine. just electrical is the another thing though... not too sure whether they are any good or not.
Problems 1) Car battery dies after 7 days, must constantly charge it 2) trunk light fuse burns out so there’s no light, caused because trunk doesn’t open 3) Gas cap is shotty 4) subwoofer doesn’t woof 5) gps graphics sucks 6) nobody near him can fix it
The truck failure to open is a know problem. My dealership researched it and created a fix. Me and a buddy now have a 100% functional trunk. www.lotustalk.com/forums/f170/evora-trunk-latch-help-upgrade-467926/ The sub issue has to do with not turning it on. We had the same issue but once on it sounds great. The gas cap seems to be hit or miss, mine works fine.
@@v317865 Aston Martin of New England. If you call them Steve is the guy you want to talk to. They actually stuck a phone in the trunk and recorded the latch not working and engineered a solution based on what they saw.
can any one explain why modern cars have to drain their batteries from lotus to my neighbors Bently they are all doing it. Radios can use GPS to update the clock every time they turn on. Radios can have bubble memory to hold the stations- so no current need there. WHY ARE WE PUTTING UP WITH THIS BULL from 1960 till about 10 or 15 years ago this did not happen. now its universal even on 200,000 cars WTF. ps paint you garage purple and black and it will be cool with the car - but piss off the old folks condo owners who hate you already for having a fun car (Nothing can be different in condo land)
To me this car has aged very well. When it first came out I thought the looks were kind of odd, but it has won me over in time. Your color is striking!...btw, the battery in my Elise goes dead all the time. That's about the only issue I have had with it in 17 years.
I wonder why you would buy a car with no dealers nearby and then complain that there are no dealers nearby? Otherwise, a few useful niggles to know about but nothing serious. Thanks

Yes, A trunk button is on the door. The trunk needed some wd40 and that fixed it. The radio sucks. But the car is so great forget the radio?
Thanks for sharing, ive been wanting the Evora next
FYI on two of the problems you have:
- The subwoofer is disabled by default, strangely. You can turn it on from the head unit settings.
- I had the stuck gas door problem for a brief moment before realizing it was the fuel cap cable getting stuck in the hinge.
My sub is set to on and max volume in the head unit and it still doesn’t work….
my 2010 lotus evora has been sitting for months in cold weather with no battery problem.
No alternator?
My trunk is not carbon fibre and it opens first time, every time. I’ve also left my car for longer than 7 days without any battery issues and I have a working light in my trunk. I don’t have the gas flap problem either.
Even with a new battery it only last 4 days. 😢
Lots of owners there who can answer questions.
trunk should open on first try, mine was stuck in a similar fashion , the latch was adjusted in my case.
Does it not trickle charge through the cigarette plug as well like most sportscars? i know my Porsches and Audi were all accessible this way
The trunk does not open always
With the gas tank no problems so far
The subwoofer I do not know if it works, hahaha
I have a problem with my seat it seems to "jingle" on corners
20 days and battery did not die on me however I would not do that a second time.
But 2 weeks is a go after that you are playing 50/50
The front cap for fluids does not close properly ....
One of the reverse light does not work and its not supposed to...fashion looks item....
Take care!
The gas door is different than the gas tank.
The car stops at the redline? Isn’t it supposed to do that? Plz explain
Yeah it does.
I don’t think the 400 came with the carbon roof and trunk. Was it only introduced on the 410?
Last part of 2018 they started add them.
It's the cable attachment to the gas cap which gets in the way of the hinge to stop it locking. You still got the car?
Yes, I have about 2500 miles on it. I have to take it back to the dealership for a recall.
What is your cup holder solution? And is there a glove box?
Has glove box.
Has a cup holder
Boot lid closing is a shame - maybe it’s weight, mines got the glass and it has been 100% reliable. Wonder if the mechanism has changed as well? Maybe it has, along with rubber the boot seal as I can close my boot lid just fine with trickle charger plugged in.
Are the boot bulbs LED? I changed mine as it’s a brighter light, but may also help with reducing power drain....
Anyway, such a stunning car, really glad you’re enjoying it 😃
The truck latch is a known problem and there is a fix for it. Talk to your dealer if you have the issue.
My RGB exige battery dies out pretty quick. But means I get to look at it every week when I plug it in to charger. 😁
half electric half gas :)
Why though? It is really inconvenient
Did you get the subwoofer working?
Yes, but it's almost not there. Radio just is not good but that is OK.
I would think a lot of maintenance is something a Toyota dealer could do because it is a supercharged Camry engine and they use a beefed Toyota transmission also.
I just got a new one too. I hope the charging issue isn't going to prove to be a real pain. So, you can't charge with the rear hatch closed?
you can if you have the fiber carbon and put it through the holes. My guess it will casue damange over time if you keep doing that as I stopped.
How do you like the 2020 evora gt?
What about the driver side mirror?
The car will not drain the battery if you use the key fob to lock the car, and then hit it a second time where you hear the chirp from the security system. In that mode, it will not drain the battery.
Good to know I never lock the car because I have the trunk open so I can charge the battery
Beautiful car... enjoy it!!
What year is this beauty?
2018
Re: stereo. There is a good document on Lotustalk about how to set it up and turn on the sub. It wasn’t set up when I got my 410.
Where is the doc? I don't think mine is on
Try this link. My stereo was not set up at all from factory and this improved it a lot. I have a different Alpine head unit but settings are still right.

The gas cap mechanism is actually off of a Jaguar XF. Stick with it mate, there aren't many cars that you'll love and hate at the same time!
well its a cheap battery, to small or lotus has a elect draw. Many race tracks require a quick disconnect for the battery ( switch on the outside of the car )that would stop the battery draw.
Yep, car dies after a week. Went on a cruise and had to get jumped off in the parking garage upon return. Nope, trunk rarely pops on first try.
I keep one of those high amperage emergency jump packs in the trunk just in case I need a jump and there's no one around or reachable.
No problems with my glass trunk. Has your door handle broken yet??
not sure I used it enough to break :)
@@v317865 It could be the key. Sometimes the key gives problems.
Also, have you had an issues with the key fob? It's kind of quirky, but I guess I'll figure it out.
Yes, It seems weak, slow and unresponsive. I was thinking a low battery but maybe not.
Yes in a manual car when you hit the red-line it will feel like hitting a wall. This is normal. Not a fault. All manual cars are like this. I'm actually stunned anybody is surprised by this :/ How long have you had a drivers license?
:) it's getting hard to find a new Manual car. My 2002 audi did not have this as an option
Andrew any further update?
I need to do an update. So far only have 2500 miles.
Just hit 3k. Man this is a great car. I have placed an order for the new lotus. I plan on kee3both but who knows.
Actually don't lock my door and the battery still drains
I love the color.
My EVORA driver mirror vibrat when I speed over 100, also I can't adjust it to the perfect way compare to the sitting position!, I asked the dealer they told me all the Evoras like this.
Not hitting 100 often but no issues with my mirrors
Still loving it?
Yes, love the car. Only wish the battery did not die after a week
@@v317865 I just bought an Evora S 2011 with only 15000km!
I have the same problem with no dealers around. I live in the DC area. Where do u live?
Maryland
@@v317865 let me know if u find a good place for service. I’ve been doing my own oil and fluid changes. I have a lift so it’s not been hard but I am so meticulous that it takes me a full day to do what a professional could do in an hour.
@@bakhteria I'm taking it back to the dealership in Michigan. I have a recall that needs to be completed. It's going to cost a lot
U would think any of the many Volvo dealers would b ideal, given that they r both owned by Geely
this color is so sick ! how is it called ? thanks !
Plum crazy purple

It's Aubergine Purple

I tell youu....problems happens to mclaren on what? door handles...very very wick
The whole world and his dog has a Porsche. Common and very boring. What u have is a mini super car. Good choice
That color looks the same as my friends
PCP Dodge Challenger R/T. But his Challenger is a couple of pounds heavier
I think it's the same color
That colour looks so much better on video than photos. Laker fan by chance?
The color changes depending on the light. When its outside it is a lighter color
doesn't this car use a toyota engine? pretty sure the 2gr fe are bullet proof so engine reliability should be fine. just electrical is the another thing though... not too sure whether they are any good or not.
Yes it does. It's super charged.
The only sound I need is my exhaust with a decat delete. Who cares about radio.
Problems
1) Car battery dies after 7 days, must constantly charge it
2) trunk light fuse burns out so there’s no light, caused because trunk doesn’t open
3) Gas cap is shotty
4) subwoofer doesn’t woof
5) gps graphics sucks
6) nobody near him can fix it
Closest repair shop is 400 miles away
Love the color
Put a fire custom gas cap..
The truck failure to open is a know problem. My dealership researched it and created a fix. Me and a buddy now have a 100% functional trunk.
www.lotustalk.com/forums/f170/evora-trunk-latch-help-upgrade-467926/
The sub issue has to do with not turning it on. We had the same issue but once on it sounds great.
The gas cap seems to be hit or miss, mine works fine.
What was your dealership that did the work? I found the gas cap seems to work if I push the lid up.
@@v317865 Aston Martin of New England. If you call them Steve is the guy you want to talk to. They actually stuck a phone in the trunk and recorded the latch not working and engineered a solution based on what they saw.
Thanks
Looks like my car does have the new parts. Lotus is trying to get me a fix.
sounds like an owner personal issue not car
can any one explain why modern cars have to drain their batteries from lotus to my neighbors Bently they are all doing it.
Thanks
