    Hi Angie! I have enjoyed your many helpful videos for the detailed descriptions of your process, your design choices, your fabulous color sense and your critiques of the results at the end. Thank you for your time and effort in putting them out there for us dyers. We appreciate you! I especially like the way this reversed rainbow spirograph t-shirt turned out. I love how the colors seem to glow against the black! Regarding how to get cleaner lines with the decolourant, perhaps you could initially tie the black shirt damp (like you usually do!) and then let it dry folded - since it’s more difficult to get a good spiral folding a dry shirt? The other suggestion I have is to apply the decolourant with a foam stencil “spouncer” brush rather than a regular foam brush. The paste still has to be applied thickly to get good color removal, but it stays on top of the folds better, giving crisper lines, rather than getting scraped down in between the folds and deforming the lines. If you decide to redo for comparison, please take us along with you!
    Cheers,
    Cat

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 года назад +1

      Thank you so much - I appreciate you watching! Those are great suggestions. Folding dry doesn't yield as crisp of folds as folding damp. I have a "spouncer" brush that I've used for stenciling, but I never thought to try it on the deColourant - great idea!

    I just stumbled upon this video, Angie. I LOVE this shirt. Do you now use the Out White Brite in place of this deColourant. If so, could you explain why you have switched? Or, would you explain under which circumstance you choose one over the other? Thanks!

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  Год назад +2

      Thank you! I don't use Out White Brite for this design. The deColourant is thicker and is almost like a yogurt consistency. It is great for projects where you want to remove the color from a specific area. I've used it to paint designs on shirts and remove the color from small areas. The deColourant works great on this design to remove color, but not too much. You an also go back and add more deColourant if you'd like to keep removing color until you are happy with it.
      Out White Brite works best when the item is submerged in the solution. I have used Out White Brite on spirals, but it is very easy to remove too much color. It's better on designs where you want to remove a large amount of color or where you can fully submerge the shirt without it being a problem.

      I’m in the process of playing with the decolourant and found some interesting stuff. I dyed a tee and tried to remove the colour from a little alien and a circle for Earth (don’t ask!)
      Colour faded initially but after washing colour came back to almost original on Earth but not the alien!
      I think I was stingy with the decolourant, lesson learned and I’ll be more generous next time.

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 года назад

      @@hespie3579 that's a strange one...Assuming that you used an iron after you painted the deColourant onto the shirt to remove the color - I don't know what the problem is. The only deColourant that I've had wash out was where I didn't go over it with an iron until the color was totally removed. You do have to use quite a bit of deColourant to get the color totally removed from an area, but if it turns a fairly even color of white after you ironed it - you should be good. If it is spotty - you can add more deColourant and repeat the process until it is light enough before you wash it. I'm not sure what could've happened - that is bizarre.

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 года назад

      I haven't tried painting it on - that would be a great technique to try though. If you do, let me know how it goes. Out White Brite is stinky, but not as bad as the Jacquard deColourant. It would be nice to find an alternative product that can be painted on a shirt.

  • @Melissa0774

    Is the decolorant similar to bleach? Could you use bleach instead, as long as you're using a black shirt?

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  2 года назад

      DeColourant isn't a bleach product, so it doesn't damage fabric the way that bleach does. It is very stinky though so I always wear a respirator when I work with it.
      You could use bleach instead, but I would recommend neutralizing the bleach after you are finished. I usually neutralize bleach with a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide (the regular kind that you would get from a pharmacy in the first aid section) and 9 parts water. After I bleach the shirt, I rinse it really well and then put the shirt into the hydrogen peroxide mixture and leave it for about 15 minutes or so. Then I put the shirt into the washing machine.

    Hi Angie! I know it has been a year since you made this video; I was just wondering if you still feel that the Jacquard's deColourant is the best for this particular design (the spirograph look). I notice that you seem to shy away from using bleach, but would you ever use bleach instead of the deColourant?
    Happy New Year!
    Nicole

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  2 года назад +2

      Hi Nicole! I think deColourant is a great option if you want to remove the color in specific areas without damaging the fabric. I love bleach because it can be applied in specific areas, but it is so easy to leave it too long and weaken the fabric. Bleach also has to be neutralized really well with hydrogen peroxide or the damage to the fabric can continue.
      I haven't ever been able to get a shirt very light using bleach either. Most of the time a black shirt will be some shade of orange. I like the orange and black combination, but it isn't as easy to apply dye over as the taupe color that I get from either deColourant, Rit Color Remover or Out White Brite.
      I bought a few colored shirts that I plan to use bleach on soon. A few years ago I tied and bleached a teal colored shirt. The bleach lightened the teal, and after I neutralized the shirt I left it alone and didn't dye it because I thought it looked really cool. I'm hoping to have a similar result with the shirts I purchased. I'm not intending to leave the bleach on long enough to drastically lighten the shirt or hopefully long enough to damage it.

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  3 года назад +1

      Hi! I honestly don't know if that would work. In order for the deColourant to remove the color, you have to iron it and I would think that would damage the screen print. I guess in theory you might be able to steam the deColourant to get it to remove, but I honestly think it would damage the screen print too.
