- Stretch were a 1970s British rock band that grew from the collaboration between Elmer Gantry (real name Dave Terry) and Kirby (real name Graham) Gregory. Gantry had been the frontman of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera. Kirby had been a member of Curved Air.
The band was put together in 1974 with help from Fleetwood Mac manager Clifford Davis and drummer Mick Fleetwood to perform as Fleetwood Mac on a US tour because the existing Fleetwood Mac were not in a position to fulfil outstanding contractual obligations.
However, Fleetwood did not join the tour as planned, and later denied any knowledge or involvement, and partway through the tour it became obvious to audiences that there was no original member of Fleetwood Mac in the band, and the tour collapsed. Bass player Paul Martinez claimed, "Mick Fleetwood pulled out at the last minute claiming not to know who we were!
Stretch rose from the ashes of this debacle, and soon had a No. 16 hit single in November 1975 with "Why Did You Do It?” the lyric of which was a direct attack on Mick Fleetwood for his failure to join the band on the ill-fated US tour.
In the official video for the record bass player Paul Martinez wore a traditional keffiyeh head-dress. Besides bass player Martinez, guitarist Kirby and Jim Russell on drums and tambourine, the single featured electric guitar by Hiroshi Kato and horns by Bud Beadle, Chris Mercer, Mick Eve, Mike Bailey and Ron Carthy.
This Toppop video was recorded on 13 February 1976
The single reached to no. 6 in the Dutch Top 40 in March 1976.

This is an absolute masterpiece.
Indeed this is one of the greatest tracks ever
Who Cares ?
@@TheJoegallaghan Well , it's something for those who are about art and music , they enjoy stuff like that , don't worry about it.
Top top tune. If this doesn’t get you off your wherever you are listening to this classic: be it a dance floor/sofa/ or wherever you happen to be listening to this timeless tune, and to boggy on down, there no hope for you dance wise.🤣🤣👍🙏
Excellent live band band. Superb musicianship.
Some songs are just made for eternity. This is one of them.
Agree, great song with that hard-boiled, funky groove and Elmer's raspy vocals! Also, a very funny back story behind it (you know how these guys were hired by Mick Fleetwood to do a US tour posing as Fleetwood Mac, at a time when the real FM, pre-Stevie Nicks and pre their golden age of arena glory, were in a state of limbo but had contractual obligations to fulfil? Then Mick failed to show up at the first gigs and the band, these guys, felt he had given them away!) 😁
YESSSS
Very well said.
Amen man; this has, sadly, been overlooked after short stint. But a great funk/soul track- well delivered,
JaneR

Heard this in a shop for first time in decades! Fantastic song, rediscovered it , yay!!
The way Gigi D’Agostino sampled this… absolute genius
😭@callahansmoke
@callahansmokeGigi D'Agostino, ignorant
The mind and work process all these producers have is just fascinating to me. They listen to so much music across genres and decades, and their mind is always "on" in that it suddenly latches onto a one-second moment somewhere in the song, they store it in "the library", and they come back to it, maybe the next day, maybe years later, to create something completely different from it. It's like the music version of every DIY person who has this tool shed full of random stuff that they might use at some point in the future, possibly, and they somehow always remember that they have it when they need it.
I've never heard this before and I've been listening to music since the late '60s!! Brilliant track!
We can always discover good music
I’ve seen them live in a pub on the Romford Road, in the early 1980’s. They were great live.
So smooth, funk at its best!
Das ist eins der cooooooolsten songs ever! Beachte auch das abgefahrene Bühnenbild und den rhythmischsten Scheich.... great Vibrations ❤ I`m feeling good...

One of the most best Riffs ever and that is the truth.
It's not the truth It's an opinion.
@@gogoyubari366 Eh yeah, in my opinion. That’s why I posted it numbnuts.
yeah.. some music is for ever... smoke on the water is similar .. only 3 or 4 notes and you know that song.
@@signpo890 Noxema Jackson is quite right, it's only your opinion. The fact you posted it doesn't make it true, all you have done is post your opinion, numbnuts. Mind you, in my opinion it is a great riff.
This is the Happy Mondays a decade earlier.
Fuckin' great !!!
played this when I was DJ in the 1970s ,filled the dance-floor,still love it now x
You certainly did a great job for the folks on the dancing floor back-in-those-days: choosing from dozens of “singles”! 🎧🎶💃🏼🕺🏼🎵

THIS ONE I HAVEN'T HEARD IN A REALLY LONG TIME.STILL FUNKY AS EVER
Noel’s drumming here is absolutely fantastic ……he had great style and technique……Rest in Peace…🥁
Loved dancing to this.
I love this song. I think the band were maybe a one hit wonder but what a brilliant song. There are many bands who play this song on the pub circuit. Good music!
Best oldies, 70's 80's!!! Born 1972 best time to live!

E hai spaccato
One of the most cool songs ever written!
Très groove, en souvenir du bon vieux temps musicalement métissé.
Dig that funky A-rab !!
Probably my all time favourite song always played in Ibiza clubs 42 yrs ago magic.
Crazy story behind this track. Actually a terrible story…but if it wasn’t for the horror we wouldn’t have this absolute gem of a song. One in a million tracks!
Elaborate please?!
Yes, elaborate please?
@@joooanit0224 well, they were supposed to front for Fleetwood Mac in the US. It was going to be their break! Then right at the last minute, after they had arrived in the States, Mick Fleetwood canceled their appearance. He didn’t pay them anything and fabricated a lie that he had never even asked them to play. The lyrics are a reply to him.
@@crizish Thank you very much for elaborating.
@@crizish Worse than that they actually performed a few shows billed as Fleetwood Mac on the understanding that Mick Fleetwood would be joining them shortly, audiences noticed something was up (no female singer most notably), the shows got bad reviews and I think that is what made Mick Fleetwood change his mind and distance himself from it. Shady from Mick but as you say, we get this gem of a track.
Une petite partie de ma jeunesse, j'adore 🙌
Awesome 2thumbs up
When I was 18, this was at the disco, and Grandmaster Flash. This is the best music.

I'd never heard this before. It's pretty kickass!
I would suggest you leave this chat 😊
Very cool! How did I miss it and cool story behind the song.
Superb track! Pure soul and funk,Marky boy
I heard a sample of this in a tune on the radio this afternoon (December 21) and I recognised it immediately as from the 70's as a record I'd loved but couldn't think who it was until I googled!
I'm not sure that I ever saw a video of the band and I certainly didn't know the story behind it - thanks for posting, very interesting!
i heard same clip , and thought of climax blues band, average white band, knew i was wrong , looked it up
One two... have been saving ever since the record came out. Should be a memento nowadays haha ;)
Ésto sigue rompiéndome la cabeza aún hoy, después de cuarenta años haberla escuchado por primera vez. Impresionante sonido y voz...
Te garantizo que no sos el único, estoy en la misma... Un saludo!
Absolut cool
great

I remember thinking this would be a hip US Black American band ,imagine the shock of seeing the above on TOTP ,great tune thought !
White men make great black music (in this case).
Average white band would have smashed this too
I love this song then and now !
This track was way ahead of its time damm...
Love that bass player
Underrated masterpiece
Was listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 for July 3rd 1982 and prior to playing Fleetwood Mac's "Hold Me", Casey gave an abbreviated (and as I discovered, not very correct) synopsis of Fakewood Mac. I went down a rabbit hole and ended up here. Wow! Can't understand how this never became a hit in the US. This song reminds me of the Average White Band, but MUCH better!
Eines der besten Lieder überhaupt ❤❤❤❤
Excellent bit of music, very catchy
SIMPLESMENTE SENSACIONAL ESSE SOM👊
Underrated song...perfect in a travel in the midnight
you wha?
Yes the 70s and 80s those were best disco days to live and jive through

Brilliant song.
Why is this song not that famous?
For those who know what this is, it's very famous.
@@zsoltpradel1776 Look at the views man
Good things might come out from bad things, sometimes. Fleetwood’s nastiness led to the creation of this amazing song. There is also a recent interview with the band where they explain what is in the description of this video.
Brilliant !!!
Happy birthday mom, my mom love this song!!!
Timelessness 🎉 I ❤ funk
Ah pero que buen tema!!!🤩
Classic 🤘
Ouvi quando era adolescente, vivia na minha mente até que you tube me agraciou amo essa música.
Legend
Great epic song
This is easily the best Fleetwood Mac song
I know right! Mick Fleetwood must have been really miffed at how the lyrics cast him as a faithless, fickle woman.... 😃The back-story of the band and the song is hilarious.😃 A great single though, top class white r'n'b!
great voice great song
Brilliant
big fan of gigi d'agostino here. Just imagine what I felt when coming back from work on bicycle and listening to this track on Radio Jazz for the first time. I almost hit the pole.
