They thought they were making this huge statement. lol! Turns out the statement was….”we’re making ourselves irrelevant from here on out”. Anyway, no, men weren’t mad. I don’t think anyone was. That’s ridiculous! Unless you’re maybe talking about some elderly church people who thought they were immoral back then. There weren’t these groups of evil abusive men running around getting their panties in a twist over Goodbye Earl.
@@ScragsP22 No, the Dixie Chicks "made themselves irrelevant" the moment they called out our government for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, well before they changed their names to The Chicks. How's Afghanistan looking now after our government sent our soldiers, some of whom never came home, to fight an unwinnable war? You may have been okay with the song. Good for you. But not everyone was,and they were not all elderly Christians. I was in my twenties, too, sooooo Iwas also there and then and cognizant.

The Dixie Chicks were a small time trio of gals who did traditional country music for a while but never really found "their sound". Their lead singer quit and they linked up with a new singer - who was more of a rocker type. And their combined energy just worked. They were at the top of the charts and had hit after hit... crossing over from country to popular music. Then they spoke out against the US involvement in the Middle East and President Bush -- and the country music audience went CRAZY. The Dixie Chicks got pulled off the playlists of the country radio stations... former fans protested them & burned their CDs, threw out their records, etc. But the Dixie Chicks never backed down... they believed it was an unjust military action (and as Americans, they hav the right to say that) ... but they continued to play - even showed great support for the military soldiers (their version of "Traveling Solider" is considered one of the best) ... it's still rare to hear their music played on the radio. Natalie, the lead singer has released a non-country album and continues to record and perform with the Chicks (as they've redubbed themselves to separate their image from any negative connotations which might be linked to the "Dixie" term - which, for some, harkens back to the old Confederate South) They're a talented group and have some beautiful songs - they're catalog of work is definitely worth exploring.
They didn't get dropped because they spoke out against the war. Many country artists have been outspoken against war throughout the decades. They got dropped because they trash the sitting US president during a concert in England... Which is considered treason by most Americans at the time. They have the right to do that, but the backlash was fast and hard.
The Chicks lost the Dixie part of their name after the backlash of protest of G.H.W. Bush and the war. Then if course all the info about how the war was a started by bad Intel but The Chicks didn't want to go back to the Dixie Chicks name.
This video was huge back in the day. The song was funny and the actors were all well known back then. Dennis Franz always played a cop, Lauren Holly was well known for Dumb and Dumber and Picket Fences and Jane Krakowski played a popular loopy character on Ally McBeal.
Dixie was dropped from the name In 2020, the American country music band The Dixie Chicks changed their name to The Chicks in response to pressure to drop the word "Dixie", which is often associated with slavery: Background
I figured it was because of their dislike for Bush which they voiced.. and it killed their career.. so they waited a few years thinking the heat died down.. and they wanted to come back.. so they dropped the Dixie.. because if anyone knows history, Dixie had nothing to do with Slavery. there is no spin on that shit... the democrats spinned the rhetoric

*History Lesson* They got "cancelled". Per Google: The Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks, were canceled after lead singer Natalie Maines criticized President George W. Bush and the Iraq War in 2003: Backlash: The band faced a backlash from country radio and audiences. Some say this was because country audiences tend to be more Republican than fans of other genres. The war she was talking about was based on lies and anyone with a brain knew there were no WMD - Colin Powell admitted it was based on lies. 45 said far worse things about America whilst being President.
My take on that is that they suspected what had happened to Earl, had no problem with it, and wanted to make sure they didn't accidentally find something they couldn't ignore. This way they could tick the "Searched Earl's house" checkbox on their investigation and get on with their lives.
I can't believe how controversial this song was. I was never a big Dixie Chicks fan but their cover of Landslide is great. The two sisters that back the lead singer started a band called Courtyard Hounds that I liked a lot. Their song Ain't No Son of Mine is awesome.
I mean, given the recent “your body my choice” bs going around right now, I’m not surprised at all this music video was controversial back then. People just don’t take domestic abuse seriously. Tho definitely sounds like this song needs a comeback imho.
The Dixie Chicks rocked int so many ways. They were so good. Their country base went death-threat on them. Please keep watching strong women making waves.

Dixie Chicks went to calling themselves the Chicks after they came back on the sence. They were my favorite country band. When country turned on them i remember turning against country when i was young. You should listen to more of their musuc. This song was an anthem to all us girls back in the 90s.
This song always reminds me of the movie Practical Magic (based on a book, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock), not cause it's on the soundtrack or anything, but it's a story of sisters, one who is abused by her man and he ends up dead (twice, or three times depending on how you look at it) lol.
Going through rough times I played this song, Eve - Love is Blind and Miranda Lambert - Gunpowder and Lead on repeat. Got me through some really tough times.
This song really brought domestic violence and spousal abuse out into the open, and brought it to the forefront of national attention. It opened up dialogue, and actually helped to make it easier to get help in these situations.
I asked if you could do a pink reactiion no biggie you were in Thailand! So im asking another Chicks song 'not ready to make nice' Its very good stemming from their cancel culture b.s. and they won 3 grammies. Haters are gonna hate though. ❤❤ To you and wifey and the babies
Thank you for your extra support! Just a heads up. I don’t do paid reactions. I always pick stuff very randomly so no promises on what I react to next. I do have your requests and will see what I can do
The character Earl is played by Dennis Franz who was a main character on NYPD Blue for 12 seasons, from 1993 to 2005. This song was released in 1999. It was a time when there were a lot of movies about spousal abuse but no so much in music. Country music videos in the '80s usually told a story. The Dixie Chicks made this video in the style of many of Reba McEntire videos. You should try "Does he love you".
This is the first song I heard by them that I sung in karaoke with my friend in a bowling alley in Maryland in a small town in Maryland so I still call in the Dixie Chicks even though they go by the checks now I love them so much add a little black girl growing up in the 90s you know listen to all different types of me some glad you listened to his girl had to dye is my favorite killing or if you're going to break up with your boyfriend sing this song
BP Reba's " Does He Love You" ft. Linda Davis is another great one. Linda was Reba's backup singer for years and hard to tell their voices apart. The end is a real blast.
Now you should React to some of their Live performances. Travelling Soldier and Landslide with Stevie Nicks are a good start. The Chicks dropped the "Dixie" years ago and I love them even more for it. Incredibly talented musicians who I hope to see Live in person some day.
109 is a highway between Portland Tennessee to Lebanon with lots of little country towns inbetween. At times its 4 lanes now but back then it was just a country 2 lane rural route.
I love The Chicks. My husband and I saw The Dixie Chicks perform when they were just starting out and thought they were fabulous. I was so pleased when they became the headliners. They are so very talented and I enjoy all their music. You should listen to their cover of Traveling Soldier.
The girls didn't just throw him down the hill. The lyrics say they went out to the lake. The camera is usually looking up at them throughout, so you don't see the lake below. If they live far enough south, there will be gators. If law enforcement doesn't start looking quickly, there is no finding Earl. That is solid covering your tracks.
Dennis Franz (Earl) spent 20 years as Chicago PD, he played cops and bad guys. Lauren holly has done comedy and drama, including 3 years in NCIS and was married to Jim Carey. they started out as Dixie Chicks then went against Bush and the Gulf War, and dropped Dixie saying it was racist, then faded out (I Think).
The equal stars of this video are the actors. Dennis Franz usually plays brusque, cranky, rough tv cop roles, as in Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. But most acquaintances will tell you what a nice guy he really is. Lauren Holly has been in many movies, and 3 years on NCIS, and other TV appearances. Jane Krakowski is a tv, movie, and stage actress who also sings. Seeing Dennis Franz camp it up as zombie Earl at the end is hilarious!
Their video for Wide Open Spaces was filmed in Winter Park, CO at the 1998 West Fest. They were still known as The Dixie Chicks. I was there with friends and we have been able to find ourselves in the crowd scenes. Another bit of trivia for that one, the tour bus they used was owned by the then owner of Crystola Inn, just up the hill from Colorado Springs.
I love The Chicks, and their former iteration The Dixie Chicks. Their music is everything from country-pop to the more formal country. They are incredibly talented musos, each being multi instrumental. Their version of the Stevie Nicks song "Landslide is just beautiful, as is "Travelling Soldier " (bring lots of tissues, and be prepared to ugly cry...). White Trash Wedding is also a fun number... Wide Open Spaces is another fave. The girls have a great back catalogue, well worth getting lost in. 😊 🙃🐨🇦🇺
BP, I hope you will do the live version of "TRAVELING SOLDIER" by the Dixie Chick's or The Woke Chicks or whatever the heck they're calling themselves these days.. 🤔 The girls are all very talented musicians and sing beautiful harmonies, and that song is gorgeous and makes me tear up every time. They play their instruments in the video and sing it beautifully. 💃🎵🪕🎻
Earl is played by Dennis Fran’s who was on NYPD blue and was a strict cop whose character never would’ve been like Earl but I love how the Chicks keep it lively and positive! They helped mainstream getting help from abuse.
Their song I'm not Ready to make nice, was about not wanting to apologize for remarks they made against the Iraq war and the Bush administration. They got a lot of criticism from the good ol' boys of country music listeners and were essentially boycotted. They were wildly popular when they were suddenly boycotted. The videos show black stains which depicted the back room reason for the war, oil.
8:54 catch that pause and see the hand in the bottom right corner to catch the body before it hits the camera! Love seeing that when I watch the video lmao.

When country turned on them i remember turning against country when i was young. You should listen to more of their musuc. This song was an anthem to all us girls back in the 90s.
I always thought of the song, My Good Gal, by Old Crow Medicine Show, when I heard this song. They're great.
This is is still on my country to 80s metal Playlist.
Going through rough times I played this song, Eve - Love is Blind and Miranda Lambert - Gunpowder and Lead on repeat. Got me through some really tough times.
This song warms my heart in the same way the I Pray For You by Jaron and the Long Road to Love does
This song really brought domestic violence and spousal abuse out into the open, and brought it to the forefront of national attention. It opened up dialogue, and actually helped to make it easier to get help in these situations.
Love, Love, LOVE the Dixie Chicks, Talent through the roof and straight forward and not afraid to speak their minds.
Hardy ~ Wait in the truck.
Yes!! I would love to see a reaction to that!!
Denise Franz from NYPD Blues and so much more was perfect.. he was hilarious
Saw them in San Antonio (circa 2000) w/ my gf's - great concert & still have my *Goodbye Earl* hat!
Don't dismiss the bestie factor 😂
I asked if you could do a pink reactiion no biggie you were in Thailand! So im asking another Chicks song 'not ready to make nice'
Its very good stemming from their cancel culture b.s. and they won 3 grammies. Haters are gonna hate though. ❤❤ To you and wifey and the babies
Thank you for your extra support! Just a heads up. I don’t do paid reactions. I always pick stuff very randomly so no promises on what I react to next. I do have your requests and will see what I can do
@BlackPegasusRaps no worries...happy to support either way! Happy thanksgiving 🦃🦃
When I was a bit younger, it was a great song for us girls to sing on a sunny afternoon ... with cocktails, of course!
Yes, I remember those days with my girlfriends. Fun times!!!
Loved Dixie Chicks. ❤
BP Reba's " Does He Love You" ft. Linda Davis is another great one. Linda was Reba's backup singer for years and hard to tell their voices apart. The end is a real blast.
I can’t seem to find the reaction to lights went out in Georgia… I am a new member… but I’ve subscribed for a long time. Love your reactions!!!
So glad to see how well you took this song. Some reactors don't seem to get it. Such a great song. Thank you for this one=) And thank you Annette!!!
Such a great video :D Thanks a bunch for reacting to this. . It's kind of dark, but yeah... so awesome :D
The only Chicks song that tops this one is "Not Ready to Make Nice" which is my personal anthem some days.
I love The Chicks. My husband and I saw The Dixie Chicks perform when they were just starting out and thought they were fabulous. I was so pleased when they became the headliners. They are so very talented and I enjoy all their music. You should listen to their cover of Traveling Soldier.
They have another one I loved, called Traveling Soldier. It was beautiful
Love this song! Glad you found it.
The shock and concern on your facial expression is everything 😂
Did you notice the hand reaching out to keep his tarp wrapped body from full on colliding with the camera? Epic!
I played Earl in the elementary school talent show circa like 2000 for some girls singing this song lolol
A great cover to this song is from a band called Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies
My aunt and uncle would listen to this song and Werewolves of London all the time in the car 😂
I adore the way they used such happy voices.
They have so many good songs ❤
Peg out here giving tips 10:25 lmao
6:38 oh this song is a party to a lot of women who didn’t goodbye their Earl this way, but had to fight out sone other way.
I wore this cassette tape OUT when I was in college!! Absolutely hilarious. Love The Chicks!
Should check out their live performance of Traveling Soldier, these ladies are extremely talented playing instruments, vocals, song writing..
Starts @2:25. Earl is the traditional creep who waited until Wanda was "legal" . I love Goodbye Earl -! the music video always cracks me up!
These gals are so talented!!
Earl, Dennis Franz, was a cop on Hill Street Blues. He has 3 stepdaughters who love him dearly.
He was Detective Andy Sipowitz in NYPD Blue and the head angel in City Of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan.
@@kvbstudios316 And he showed his ass to the whole country. lol
Your reaction cracks me up.
The Chick's version of Travelin Soldier will bring you to tears. I listen to it all the time. Natalie Maines's voice is so appealing.
Second this. As a veteran, I always end up in tears
He should also do Home Free's cover of "Travelin' Soldier".
He was on NYPD Blue for years, as well as Hill Street Blues for 4 seasons total (that one was set in Chicago).
One "bar" in the song that I always liked is.....Earl was missing person that no one missed at all.
A long time ago I qualified for a singing competition with that song 😂 it was a lot of fun.
You need to do The Chick's Traveling Soldier, it's the opposite end of the spectrum: sad. Exceptional storytelling, and musicality.
🙃🐨🇦🇺
Cowboy Take me Away and Not Ready To Make Nice are my favorites From The Chicks
This was played at my cousin's wedding a couple months ago and I started cracking up. My brother said he'd never heard it before.
my favorite line in the song is "Ain't it dark, wrapped up in that tarp?
