The Nuclear Bunker Preserving Movie History

  • America's movie and film archive is located in an underground bunker in Culpepper, Virginia. The bunker was originally a gold storage unit that doubled as a fallout shelter for the U.S. president and his cabinet during the Cold War. Today, the Library of Congress stores all manner of film here. Archivist George Willeman is in charge of the nitrate vaults, where fragile (and combustible) old films sit undisturbed and well preserved.

essential vital work, preserving our past, our memories....I hope this extends into Television history too. Despite the mediums bad rep there are nuggets worth preserving. The corny early 50's TV commercials included, the classic cartoons like Bugs Bunny, etc. I also read that data made from about 1980 - 2000 was made on a material that withers rapidly and will soon be gone, or something like that. Hope all the good stuff is kept safe.

    • @laustcawz2089
      @laustcawz2089 2 года назад

Those classic Bugs Bunny et. al
      WB cartoons were actually shown
in theaters originally. One of the only ones
I know of that's definitely been
added to The National Film Registry
      is 1953's "Duck Amuck".
There is tons of classic TV content
      that should be preserved
      for future generations, though.
They might start with "I Love Lucy"
      & the original "Twilight Zone".

I am looking for a documentery made in around 2009 about the National Film Registry. I know it exists because I had seen it before not even a month ago but I can't seem to find it anymore. It covered a handful of the movies in there spending about 1-2 minutes talking about each movie- showing clips from it and showing people who worked there talking about how the movie made it in to the registry, and then they'd move on to the next. They covered movies like how Back to the Future got reccomended so many times, and these little short films about a guy singing with a duck and a movie called H2O which is just clips of water that get closer and closer until it doesn't even look like water anymore.
I'm really looking for this documentery but I don't know how to get more specific with Google other than: 'national film registry documentery made in 2009.'
Could you please help me find the title?
    Thank you:)

I'm curious about the printing and what they print. Do they print new sections for missing and damaged sections of film? Do they make extra copies? Make film-outs of digital movies? Do they make prints from nitrate copies/originals? I know they do screenings of movies from their archive, so I also wonder if they make prints of movies they want to screen if they only have original negatives.

You're aware that basically all major films, even ones made today, are stored on physical film reels, because it's more reliable than hard drives, or any other digital format will ever be? You heard the guy, he has films that are 100+ years old, and yet they were still able to restore and play the films. Try doing that with a hard drive or any other digital format, hell even analog formats too.
