The Nuclear Bunker Preserving Movie History

- America's movie and film archive is located in an underground bunker in Culpepper, Virginia. The bunker was originally a gold storage unit that doubled as a fallout shelter for the U.S. president and his cabinet during the Cold War. Today, the Library of Congress stores all manner of film here. Archivist George Willeman is in charge of the nitrate vaults, where fragile (and combustible) old films sit undisturbed and well preserved.

IKR
I saw Princess Mononoke, keep that one safe mates.
Tato Smasher indeed! Clearly they still store gold there
They must have all Ghibli movies..
You didn't need to keep all the Adam Sandler films.
Tim Tam's Its a reminder for those who find it on what not to do in film.
Tim Tam's happy Gilmore was good though
Tim Tam's 🙌
why? Adam sandler movies were good to watch
Tim Tam's Yes, yes they did
Another "I'm glad someone is doing this" moment
But do they have cool cat saves the kids
EndCubing, of course they do.
That's such a coincidence I asked myself that in the middle of the video
the real question is:
do they store the piano cat?
0:53 "Justin Bieber: never say never." I say let them nuke that one. Just set it outside to save us from utter embarrassment.
Braselton94 they need to let it go
Braselton94 Keep it so other space civilizations know what not to do.
Olsa Shamwow good idea!
space alians might think it's a threat
ravens are the best lol
Fascinating! He is living his dream and at the same time, playing a huge role in preserving history! Very cool!
This guy is awesome. How can I get this job? Is he talking internships?
that is what i was thinking
same It would be really interesting working there
Emilio Luera to get
I drive by this place all the time! On the outside it looks all overgrown and pretty cool. Although I have not been inside, I know that sometimes they play a few films, and people can come in and watch, for free! :)
Dismal Spectre that's really cool
Awesome, someone from around here
What a phenomenal clip! I wish I could visit. How many of these have been digitized?
32 i dunno
They do show flims
great big stories are the best!!!
when the government asked for star wars, george lucas said he forgot where they were, and now the original star wars film is gone forever
I wouldn't be surprised if a film collector has an early theatrical print.
preserving Americas film/cultural history seems like it would be an exciting job seeing as you have over a century's worth of it in your hands.
Bee movie better be in there
keep the ghibli films extra secure please
Oh boy, so glad for people in the future to wonder why Fred the movie exists
I love this channel it's so underrated
I could spend my days in that place just watching movies. That's how much movies make me happy! 😊 Great video, very well made.
EmilyCheng29 i believe they occasionally show films there only reason i know is cuz i live in culpeper
0:49 Am I the only one who thought it was Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie. C'mon they gotta have it.
Shameron same i thought that too
That's Freaking Awesome!
Did anyone else hear that creepy breathing closer to the end during the shot of him watching an old movie?
"It's goal is to ensure the survival and the conversation of our nation's films."
0:52 "JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER."
And why would you want to ensure the survival of THAT?!
so...so do they store porn?
Kyle Tran or that doctor who movie????
There's not enough room on earth for that.
asking *THE* real questions
Kyle Tran no. They only store documents that would help the world know about history/
In special cases, you can actually hold the original Star Wars film reel from the first movie.
I'm more interested in the bunker, seems amazingly cool.
It would be so fun just to watch the movies as a part time job!
loved his smile at the end ☺
love this channel the best content
essential vital work, preserving our past, our memories....I hope this extends into Television history too. Despite the mediums bad rep there are nuggets worth preserving. The corny early 50's TV commercials included, the classic cartoons like Bugs Bunny, etc. I also read that data made from about 1980 - 2000 was made on a material that withers rapidly and will soon be gone, or something like that. Hope all the good stuff is kept safe.
Those classic Bugs Bunny et. al
WB cartoons were actually shown
in theaters originally. One of the only ones
I know of that's definitely been
added to The National Film Registry
is 1953's "Duck Amuck".
There is tons of classic TV content
that should be preserved
for future generations, though.
They might start with "I Love Lucy"
& the original "Twilight Zone".
Cartoon series like Looney Tunes, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Popeye, Betty Boop, Pink Panther and Tom and Jerry were actually shown in movie theatres before television even existed.
This is my most favorite one I had ever seen
Extraordinary!
OMG I live in Culpeper, I see that building all the time!
My dream job! Fixing films in an underground bunker!
wow, this is amazing !
this is really amazing I hope one I'll be able to do this for the rest of my life.
I need to go there. Film is my love
A man with a purpose. I wish to be like you one day, old friend.
Very important program keep saving the history.
Netflix in the past
After long time, i'm able to find good channel.
The voice over audio is messed up. I don't think it's on my side by a render problem. Music and SFX is fine. Nevermind I'm having a RUclips audio playback problem.
this is awesome
that feel when jack and jill is included.
Just imagine if humanity were to be wiped out and later aliens came down and watched the films
0:55 star wars episode II 😀
Hey Arnold! The movie. Classic.
I always pasted this place and had no idea what it was, this is amazing tbh😂
This vid will go there
Is it me or do I just want to binge ever single reel back to back in order?
I am looking for a documentery made in around 2009 about the National Film Registry. I know it exists because I had seen it before not even a month ago but I can't seem to find it anymore. It covered a handful of the movies in there spending about 1-2 minutes talking about each movie- showing clips from it and showing people who worked there talking about how the movie made it in to the registry, and then they'd move on to the next. They covered movies like how Back to the Future got reccomended so many times, and these little short films about a guy singing with a duck and a movie called H2O which is just clips of water that get closer and closer until it doesn't even look like water anymore.
I'm really looking for this documentery but I don't know how to get more specific with Google other than: 'national film registry documentery made in 2009.'
Could you please help me find the title?
Thank you:)
It's Beautiful ❤️
Doing Great Job
God damn these are so short and interesting I can never stop just saying "Just one more" I've been trying to go to bed for over an hour!
This is crazy! I've driven by here not knowing what it was thinking it was some millionaires confiscated home but I just came across this video, How awesome!
I hope he opens a cinema and plays these amazing history
I bet the original full length Zapruder film is hidden in there somewhere...probably mislabeled as something no one would ever want to see again
This guy get to watch movies!
I guess you could say,
They're keeping it reel
Idk but the ending was adorbable
Hey arnold the movie, i loved that
Linus has all those films in the petabyte server anyways... so long as he doesn't drop it this place can close up shop.
Hey Arnold! the movie 0:48-0:49 love that movie
I'm curious about the printing and what they print. Do they print new sections for missing and damaged sections of film? Do they make extra copies? Make film-outs of digital movies? Do they make prints from nitrate copies/originals? I know they do screenings of movies from their archive, so I also wonder if they make prints of movies they want to screen if they only have original negatives.
Do they have foodfight?
hahah "Hey Arnold!" awesome.
I love how hey Arnold the movie is in there
0:48 hey arnold. i was like omg
They even have the Hey Arnold Movie!!!
I’m going to sneak in the archives with a giant duffel bag. You name it we play it!
At 0:51 you can see like 4 HP movies!! It's cool because, Harry Potter is preserved somewhere.
Ralf Tan the film who lived
Those are actually just half of one movie, looks to be reels 4 through 8
Fun fact when star wars was chosen to be submitted for preservation George Lucas sent the remastered edition rather than the original. They didn't except it as they wanted the original and till this day George Lucas still keeps the negatives to himself
preserved history
I wanna go there
guys I got a VIP tour there this summer because someone my dad knows works there
I used to live somewhat close to here
I hope they have the original film of London after Midnight
I wonder if "The Room" and "The Human Centapide" are also there.
I freaked out when they had hay Arnold
I love it♡
Alright, now show me who's in charge of putting all this on streaming sites
Wait until one guy to mess up and causing a nitrate fire.
Dream Job!!!
Reminds me of Iron Mountain.
Do they have The Story of the Kelly Gang?
and now we stored our film in torrent
so this is where my taxes are going XD
Lorenzo Zarate sadly yes they could just put it in a fucking hard drive
Yes, but what would you do with the hard drive after 20 years? 50? 500?
You're aware that basically all major films, even ones made today, are stored on physical film reels, because it's more reliable than hard drives, or any other digital format will ever be? You heard the guy, he has films that are 100+ years old, and yet they were still able to restore and play the films. Try doing that with a hard drive or any other digital format, hell even analog formats too.
Thomas
David Bernfeld and you could buy the construction on a word doc
i like how when the world ends im gonna die but not a bunch of tapes
0:49. Hey Arnold!
They should go to Sudan's film archives
They have a lot of collected films but they are not taken care of. Watch the documentary film of al Jazeera about the the Sudanese archivist and you'll know.
Imaging if there was place like this where they cared about extinct animals this way.
LNxTCB A enclosed underground cage?
We sorta have one for plants and we care for endangered animals sorta like this just all separate for different animals
They already do
The post-nuclear world will be better off if you go ahead and throw out the Adam Sandler movies.
If the apocalypse happens imma pick up some films.
So he's the man in the high castle.
Now this is a national treasure. I believe history has always been dishonest and the free thinkers, artists and film makers with balls always told the truth.
Of all things they had to preserve fucking Bieber
The room?
How spooky
The real question is do they have the extended edition lord of the rings only or The Cut and the extended Editions.
is this the man in the low castle?
do they have the original theatrical versions of star wars?
I would love to have his job
