Lyrics
[Verse 1]
We live in Orwellian times
It feels impossible to pick a side
In sentences that dance and hide
The truth becomes a broken lie
[Chorus]
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
Where me and you could co-exist
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
Words wage war, meanings being missed
I'll walk you through thе apocalypse
[Verse 2]
We live in Orwеllian times
A deepening sense of fear and crime
On the playing fields, in exclusive clubs
And the people machines still making fools of us
[Chorus]
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
Where me and you could co-exist
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
Words wage war, meanings being missed
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
[Instrumental]
[Chorus]
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
Where me and you could co-exist
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
Words wage war, meanings being missed
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
"Words wage war, meanings being missed", nicely sums up the times we live in.
I was going through the comments and beginning to wonder if anyone was contemplating on the lyrics at all.
I don't get it
@@johngilliam6764 I think it's a comment about "outrage culture" where people look to be offended without trying to understand the context of whatever they've read or heard.
I think it talks about words and meanings being distorted by the mainstream media and Western govts in an Orwellian way (especially in 1984 style) in order to manufacture public consent so that oligarchs can attack and steal from the working class. Some very relevant examples are 'peace keeping' missions, interventions to 'bring democracy', 'defence' ministries of imperialist states, 1993 Independent article about Bin Laden being a 'freedom fighter', declaring juneteenth a holiday but taking no concrete action and so on.
@@sg6683 juneteenth is an absolute retardation in both concept, implementation and meaning.
Once again the Manic Street Preachers sing a song with a far deeper meaning than it seems many people realise. Really catchy and good words, listened to it so many times already!. We need more songs like this to wake everyone up😉😁👍
People don't need to wake up. People need to grow.. Grow their love to include all life
The title of the song is quite apt for world we live in (referring to George Orwell's 1984)
@@peterutting3060 I know. I think it's actually true. The thought police are alive & kicking if you speak out anything that's against the main stream you are cancelled & lose your career. Their love is only inclusive to people in their tribe (think as them) if they grew up more they would expand their love to people who are no in their. Tribes too
Couldn't agree more what a band
Spot on Manics yet again nail it during these draconian times!!!
This song is a perfect commentary on the current zeitgeist of our world. I wish I could hug every human being on this planet and tell them I love them. We will prevail and get through these difficult times if we can just learn to love unconditionally again.
On a sea of dull music is a boat called the manic street preachers keeping real music afloat.
The band with the greatest juke box in the world. A song for every mood. Thanks for the last 35 years. Here's to yet another great album.
It’s amazing how this band just keeps on producing such great tunes, such great albums! Year after year, decade after decade... and what a voice JDB still has. Just amazing.
he sounds like Midge here... or channeling him
I've always found them pretty up and down for good album/rubbish album...back to good...and back to rubbish...

once again they gave us euphoric melancholia
Like only they can, so good
Yes but that's obviously not their purpose of this song - not by a long shot.
@@Sionnach1601 i know what the purpose of the song is. just commenting on the fact that it sounds so happy and yet it’s very sad and apocalyptic. very manics !

Hi girl who wanted to be god i’m your biggest fan
every time i hear the manics now i feel really emotional. i've never met them but I feel like they've been with me through thick and thin.
How it's possible for a band release your 14th album with a great single as 'Orwellian'? Manics can do that.

Manics 💗❤️🎵🎶
They're really something special
The lockdown gave us all time to reassess our lives… having their own recording space is also a massive plus

This is classic MSP. Sharply observed and melodic. One of the greatest bands in the world.
Don't agree. Nothing like their style. MOR muzak.
A stalwart band who always accepted the responsibility of their societal position of influence, unlike so many others.
It's hard for good people like these, who, having giving fair warning to the masses with "If You Tolerate This", to have to see their warnings largely going unheeded.
So now, here we are in the foothills of full on dystopian nightmare, and the Good Knights still dutifully come forward, when few others, bar Van Morrisson, will bother for us.
Thank you MSP and God bless, God bless all.
Yes, ignored their warnings a few times - 'intravenous agnostic', 'don't be evil' and especially 'golden platitudes', which confused many at the time with it's 'pessimism'!
Some of Nicky's best lyrics for a while (by his own very high standards). Similar vibes to futurology era tunes. Like it and always great to hear a new Manics tune
Agreed
I must be one of the few who slightly prefers Rewind The Film over Futurology, but I adore them both as album twins.
@@thejoin4687 I love both albums. Each has a very specific vibe but Rewind the Film is completely different to anything else on the Manics discography, in a good way. It's quite nostalgic yet somehow still heartwarming.

The one band that has never let me down.
What about when they did the Neighbors theme tune?
That's because they have a opinion very few bands have these days 🤔
@@DanielLeighMusic do u mean MASH? Quite different shows. That cover is amazing. Altho they did do Watership Down so maybe i missed neighbours
I dunno this might be the first single I haven’t liked. It’s a bit on the nose. Need an epic tune for a single too
And james
Wow wasn't expecting this... What a beautiful and inspiring song. The age of aquarius is upon us ladies and gentleman!!!!!
Thank youu!!!
Told u this band was sick
@kingjovvidz woah it's u.. Thank you
This is not a musical group this is an art form of truth and passion
Pure beautiful art
Dare I say.... this is one of the best things the Manics have ever done! This is pure class. I first heard it on Ken Bruce’s show when I was listening to Popmaster the other day and I was completely captivated right from the opening chords. Superb 😍
Abba poppy copy
I wasn't sure about this the first time I heard it, but listened to it a few more times, and it's a grower
Yeah the chorus seems underwhelming until you had a couple listens. After that its boss.
@@Frorackous Don't agree at all there. Very first time of hearing it thought the chorus was so powerful. Glad you got there though!
@@coleuk8817 The chorus is fantastic the more I listen to it!
@@seculardojo7738 Definitely!
First listened the other day and thought it was a little underwhelming. However, over the weekend the chorus has been stuck in my head. Definitely a grower.
It’s actually a slice of understated genius IMO
I wasn’t a fan but it’s grown on me
Likewise
Masterpiece, by music and lyrics. Really touches me as hard as The love of Richard Nixon or To repel ghosts, and many others. I feel it like a gift. Thanks.
A good first song from the new album people expecting the holy bible need to realise that the manics have moved on now and although I like the holy bible I prefer their newer songs from everything must go onwards in fact I will go further and say their music is getting better and better keep up the good work guys
As a huge thb fan, I can say that I don't want anything like this anymore. It's an outstanding album in their back catalogue and let's keep it that way. I'm glad that they're not afraid of experimenting and if it's going to be a pop abba-esque record, Iet it be
@@this_is_ally_blyat Very much so. Viewed against their overall canon, thb is quite an atypical Manics record (not that that's a criticism of the album itself, which deserves its classic status). It was an avenue that they couldn't really go any further down, except on j4pl, but that too was in its own category. Orwellian is more in line a core Manics theme: to combine "manic street preaching" with campy pop.
Pop rock Manics will always be a treat---Lifeblood is literally my second fave album after Know Your Enemy---they're one of the few 'alternative' rock bands that never gave up their melodicism for some tired, midtempo power chords jam... but I do find myself disappointed that they never tried their hand at reggae-rock (a la Joe Strummer + mescaleros)... or metal. A shame since JDB's playing absolutely shreds.
The Holy Bible was 25 years ago and it was Richie's album, not Nikki's. They can't recreate that and they shouldn't have to, people should treasure it as a part of their past and love the band for who they are now. They are still producing great albums.
The idea of having Nicky Wire walking me through the apocalypse does make the whole thing slightly more reassuring.
Sounds more interesting than a SAGA holiday.
Lol
I can imagine nicky outsmarting walter white/breaking bad in the desert.
Also it would be a fastidiously clean walk with bleach and scrubbing surfaces lol.
I liked this from the outset but upon repeated listens, like most Manics tracks, I love it. The piano is so good, particularly those two little notes during the chorus absolutely hit me. And that cheeky bass before the chorus! Solid hit. Can't wait for the album.
simple but effective
ruclips.net/user/shortsSXpx8AFiDnk?feature=share
Orwellian times indeed...
Amazing, dark, dystopian, joyful, optimistic, ABBA esque, all in one 💚💚💚💚
Maybe too much ABBA, a tad more Clash would have been more appropiate, not looking for Holy Bible style anger, but actually it would be a better fit for these times (and this song).
@@stewarttaggart7764 imagine commenting on how an artist should be creating their art
@@Partoftheratpack it's called having an opinion? I like this but would love an album sounding like their earlier rock stuff. Not stadium soft rock/pop.
@@Partoftheratpack How dare I have an opinion
Damn it I couldn’t put my finger on it when I first heard this but all I hear is ABBA after reading your comment and I bloody hate ABBA 😂 it’s refreshing to hear this new song tho. Last seen Manics in Dublin supporting Bon jovi and they played sweet child of mine by GnR.
Simply brilliant. James` voice is mesmerizing.

I love the Manics I have since I first heard them so many years ago. They have been at least two different bands, by that I mean they wrote different songs and represented something different (in my opinion) many years ago. The reason they are still so relevant is because they haven’t been afraid to evolve. Can’t wait to see them touring again.
Interesting take on things.
I used to think like that but this is like Abba.
Or
Oliver's Army keyboards.
Richie wouldn't feel happy about this apparent total sellout.
James voice is fab tho
@@steffanhoffmann8937 You can't speculate on a dead man's perspective not to mention they were so you g when they write generation terrorists and holy Bible 40 year old me is not 20 year old me and I feel the same would apply to Richie if he were still here it's personal growth
Manics summing up the current times in the way they do best. Nicky smashing it and James doing it just as ever.
Great track, and very relatable lyrics too. We are indeed in Orwellian times

You realise the band’s politics, right?
You HAVE to love this band. I’ll never stop listening. Fearless and intelligent as ever.
Always rely on Manic Street Preachers to turn out a good song with meaningful lyrics 💖🙏
I like it, strong chorus, very elegant. Personally i always wish these days that the guitars were more upfront lol. Its got this vibe of ‘ i’m going to calmly explain this to you’ rather than my personal preference of ‘listen to me!’ type songs but catchy as hell nonetheless
I'm like that too, things always sound better with loud guitar. They can do both styles though, but I wish they would do more of the heavy stuff.
@@sharpvidtube with you on that.they sound beautifully harmonic like thisbut they were BORN to do the heavy stuff
I liked the first time but now I am totally in LOVE with this.
Yeah so very powerful
Absolute gem of a track with potent lyrics and an insane hook of a chorus. In a sensible world, this would be a number one UK single. But we have Boris Johnson as PM, so we are far from that sensible world.
this is the kind of apocalypse we're living in.
@@sg6683 True, and where will it end, I wonder?
Heard this for the first time today... quite cheerful and catchy... then you realise the seriousness of the lyrics.
This is an instant classic. So apt for the times we live in. The Manics Rule.
Well said Bro
you've brought me here, with every reality encompassed breath I take on this planet, it's good to know that you still remain steadfast throughout it...
Looking forward to this new album! The Manics, unique band, very special to me from day one and my wife! ARDDERCHOG BOIS 💪 🏴 😎
Estou expectante.
God save the Manics! 🇵🇹🏴
I've listened to this song loads over the weekend. It's a got a real sort of Abba vibe to it. That first chord change. Oh man, goosebumps like golf balls. Welcome back boys, really!
Sounds nothing like that shite ABBA
@@UlyssesSGrant-de9pn One of the greatest groups of all time. The Manics would agree and the genius of both bands is not mutually exclusive. No contradiction.
Only had Journal on last night....definitely feeling Futurology vibes which ain't a bad thing. Can't wait to pick this up.
Finally some good new music for me to listen to!
Thankfully a lot more people awake now
Now the Manics have been making the most zeitgeist aware music through five different decades. No small achievement but still a very underrated band.
I'm nearly 40 but this band never stops to amaze me with every new release, like the did back when I was in my teens.
How awesome this song is with everything I like about the band. Lucky that there are the maniacs. The summer can come.

I wasn't expecting new stuff from them so soon! What with Even In Exile being released last year. What a pleasant surprise - instant preorder, as always. I really dug RiF, so hyped to see where they go with this LP.
This reminds me a bit of mid 80s Ultravox. That’s a good thing.
especially when he sings Orwellian times... sounds like Midge Ure.
ha!! i thought it reminds me of simple minds i guess theres a bit of both in there
It has a 'Dancing with tears in my eyes' ring to it.
@@johnanthonyp yes, that’s what I was thinking.
Absolutely my first thought when I heard it for the first time yesterday on the radio. Ultravox Midge Era meets OMD
"A traditional Welsh Folk Song," and at some time hence it may indeed
prove so. Early October 2021, troops on the streets in Australia, riots
in France and the USA not even reported to us by the mainstream media,
our own UK troops deployed under the guise of helping us and driving
tankers, a General Election called in the UK when we have no credible
oppositional challengers to this Government. This morning I opened my
eyes and the realization dawned that we are at war. But with whom and
why? That does't matter yet. That we start resisting--this is what
matters.
Great band brilliant songs
One of the songs of the year. Brilliant !!!
That's phenomenal. Beautiful lyrics. Wow touched my soul.
It's amazing. Thank you for being you!❤ With love from 🇷🇺
This band never cease to amaze me.
Anyone feels the connection between this song and Europa Geht Durch Mich? It's like when someone amped up to whatever unknown future they will face and having no qualms of whether they will make it or not.
Me too. Bit of take me to the bridge and people give in as well. Could almost see this being done with an orchestral backing. And the words are 2020/2021 in a nutshell
Pardon?
30 year war for me
Love you since the very start. So happy to hear from you again with such a beautiful song. Come on Manics ! (incidentally ... waitin' for you here in Italy)
Bloody hell!! That is amazing, I think I have listened to it 20 times today. This might dethrone The girl who wanted to be God as my top manics track. Love all the loud stuff but just when you think that pop is dead, they pull another beauty out of the bag.
Wow, didn't even know they were working on a new album! Great first release, can't wait to hear the rest. Loved JDB's solo album last year, very under-rated. Mind you can't believe next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Generation Terrorists... 30 f-ing years? How can this be? I bought it on the day it was released... damn, I'm getting old!
Absolutely amazing! I can't wait to hear the full album and see them live. Well done Manics 👏👍
Epic and wonderful. At the right time
I haven't listened to the Manics for a while. Listened to this and then Futurology. It would fit on there comfortably.

A song warning of where we are heading. Rockfield Studios picked out this track as one recorded there, and the piano featured is being sold at auction this Wednesday.
I'm not feeling it after the first listen, might have to give it a few more blasts hopefully the album will make me change my mind about it, I love the Manics.

@@coleuk8817 I'm hoping so, going to be seeing them 3 times this year if I get tickets for the UK tour, already got tickets for the Cardiff gig and Halifax, probably try and get the Manchester tickets aswell, I was kind of hoping they would do an anniversary gig for Generation Terrorist since it's 30 years old next year
@@craigceres4473 Lucky you! I'm going to Halifax and might do Leeds or Manchester too. Suppose one blessing about the repeated postponements of the Piece Hall gig is that we'll now hopefully hear the new material that wouldn't have existed last year. Maybe they've something up their sleeves re the Generation Terrorists anniversary. Highly unlike them not to mark such occasions.
Should have included "if you tolerate this then your children will be next" as an extra reminder.
I love it! Thank you for this wonderful song Manics! Can't wait to hear the album!
To be honest I think this is perfect for how the Manics should move forward - they’re all in their early fifties now, they don’t need to constantly shift in sound. What this does is similar to Resistance but better imo - it takes influences from previous albums of theirs and manages to make it fit with what they’re doing. This sounds like Futurology meets Postcards and I’m really liking it so far.
Yep, they’ve done it again!. ❤️
Just when I needed it most a triumphant return!
Oh I like that! Now everything will be fine !
Rewind & Futurology vibe. I think it's ok. I like it
One of there best singles,Reminds me of 'the love of Richard Nixon'.
My first listen, a hint of song for the sadness, I love the tone and the lyrics are superb as always, see u at the Halifax gig, going to be special, been a long wait.
Yeah hope the Piece Hall is fourth time lucky!
It will happen this time, make sure we all get the moshpit bouncing like it should be!
I like that chorus. It's quite an unexpected shift and I like oblique changes in a song. The Doors and The Stranglers used to do it a lot, confusing your mood response with major and minor chord changes.
Great tune
i love how i got an advert for this song on this song
Great to have you back and look forward to hearing the whole album.
2021 just got even better, Wales win the six nations covid 19 on the way out and the Manics are back, oh happy days. Welcome back boys we missed you.
