Josh Beasley Yale just looks so much nicer to me than Stanford I've seen both of the campuses on RUclips I totally prefer Yale(I've seen Rutgers Columbia nyu Princeton Notre Dame LSU ul Lafayette ole miss miss state UAlabama FSU UFlorida Tulane UVirginia SUNY Stony brook....Yale on RUclips looks really nice I got bored looking at the Stanford campus after like a minute)
this was SO helpful, especially with your tips about essays. i just started working on supplementals and honestly it's SO hard for me, mainly because i have so much to say in so little words. your advice in terms of being short and concise was PERFECT and what i needed to hear today. thank you so much!
It’s so frustrating living in South Dakota. I got a 35 on my ACT and I have a very high GPA, but there are not a lot of opportunities in or outside of school where I can explore my passion in science. This year, my junior year, I was selected as a member of the South Dakota Teen Science Cafe Leadership Team, which is pretty cool because it is one of the first teen science cafes out there and definitely the first one in South Dakota. Other than this, I don’t think my other activities are that impressive.
Yankat Well, that’s basically the only science thing I’m involved in, other than Chemistry Club at my school. For other activities, I’m the concertmaster of the orchestra and chamber orchestra at my school and I also am concertmaster of the pit orchestra when we play for school musicals. I volunteer at the Humane Society and started an animal rights club at my school. I was elected a YAC leader for SALSA at my school for next year, which is a volunteer club. I am also sponsored by my local Rotary Club to go to a camp in Nebraska this summer so I can take notes, report back to them, and help them make a similar camp in South Dakota. I also just got a food service job at a local hospital that I will start this summer. I know that I’m involved in a lot of activities, but I’m worried that not enough of them are related to my intended major (chemistry) and I will not get into a top-ranked school. Any thoughts?
Wow, I think it's amazing that you started your own club at school!! That shows some serious leadership skills (+ lets you support a great cause)! What's more, it seems you do a lot of community work, as well, which can't hurt. Hmm, but I understand your concerns. However, if there aren't a lot of opportunities for you in South Dakota, then Admissions Officers will probably know this. So, as long as you do with what you've got - then you're great! It's true not all students are offered the same opportunities, so it's only fair that someone doing the best they can in THEIR current environment is enough. Also, being selected as a member of your state's "Teen Science Cafe Leadership Team" is preeetty impressive to me. ;) Good luck! PS: I'm also a student hoping to apply some day... I love Art (painting, drawing), and I'm not sure how to show that in my application yet... Oh well, I trust that following my passion will lead me somewhere, hopefully!
Yankat Yes, it makes sense that the admissions officers would know that there are not a lot of opportunities for me. Thanks for your help! I wish I had some advice for you, but as I am not an artist, all I have to say is that I am confident you will get into a great school. Just based on the fact that you took time out of your day to reply to my comment and help a stranger out tells me that you are the type of person schools seek out. Good luck to you in the future and thank you again!
It is actually fair to say that "SAT or standard tests' scores do not count that much". But, what about international students? college requires a better GPA, SAT, and everything more than national applicants.
I agree with most of what you’re saying but when you say test score doesn’t matter than much then suggest you need a top 1% score to even be looked at is contradictory. It matters a lot and very few people can get anywhere near mid 1400s
Hey Josh, I'm a sophomore in highschool right now. My dream school is MIT btw. There are many classes I want to take but I don't really see how I can fit them all in. At my school there are 6 periods but I do a sport so that takes up one of them. I will take math, english, a science, and a sport all four years. I am required to take two more years of a history so that only leaves on class. I really want and need to take another year of a language and my school requires me to take a visual or performing art so that fills up my entire schedule! There are classes I want to take such as AP Computer Science. I know a lot about computer science already because that is a possible major I am considering. Do you think it is wise I don't do AP computer science but study for the exam and take it next year? Any input helps.
If you are confident about Computer Science, take some practice tests that are online on the College Board website for free and see if you understand the questions well. If you get a very low practice score like 1 or 0, then maybe do pursue the Computer Science course before the exam. Also, check with your counselor to see if your school allows online courses. If it does, you could take the language or the AP Computer Science course online and leave yourself some space in the schedule. Taking AP Computer Science could broaden your knowledge of technology, but it’s totally not a requirement if you’re confident about what you know.
Hey Josh, good video and I'm happy you are making time to produce quality content. I'm a freshman, and I did not take the only ap course my school. How much would that weigh in my yale application negatively if I were to apply?
Also, I took AP Lang and Comp this year and got 5s on all my practice tests but feel like I really scuffed up the test so now I'm dreading that score 😂 I just know I could have done better
If you don’t mind me asking what were the classes you took in sophomore year of high school? How many APs and did you choose to take those APs because you were interested in those subjects or just because they look good when seen by colleges?
Thanks for the tips! I was always told that the SAT is the most important part of the college application! Wow 😂 Btw have you done any interviews or can you do one of a pre-law Yale student? That would be lit! Thanks :)
Hey, Josh. Since you've talked to many of your Yale peers, what's the consensus around AP scores and Subject Tests? I think my SAT score is definitely in the range but I don't have any 5's for APs and my subject test scores are low. My applications have all been submitted so I guess there's no point in worrying but I really am concerned with my AP and Subject Test scores. I guess I'll find out in 2 weeks.
What do u think my chances of getting into university of Michigan or Virginia with these grades?: 3.9 GPA 1420 SAT Average extracurriculars? I plan on going all out for the essays in order to improve my odds
I am a freshman next year, and taking the following classes, ap gov, ap calc bc, ap physics c, bio honors, latin 2 h, 10th lit comp h. will this be managable, and what do u recommend. any help is appreciated. pls respond
You are setting yourself up for a very rigorous schedule, depending on your teachers and the school you are going to. If you have good study habits and really want to work you can manage it. Just make sure you don't get too caught up in academics and make time for extracurriculars and leadership positions because those will make you stand out as well.
this is great! Can you do a video on how to succeed on RUclips? I just started my channel on my college experience at MIT and was wondering if you have any tips! thanks!
Josh Beasley thanks. Makes more sense ! Try to do an interview with a premed. And don't let them make it sounds too peachy. The truth is mire insightful.

Great video!!! Not only informative but straight to the point. 👍🏼
Your advice about having people review your essays was soooo good
Could you get a Pre-med person to interview and talk about their experience? I think that would help a lot of people
For sure
McKinley Douberman that’d be amazing

I thought ivies don’t give merit scholarships
Awesome advice!
It is actually fair to say that "SAT or standard tests' scores do not count that much". But, what about international students? college requires a better GPA, SAT, and everything more than national applicants.
Will you interview a female student from Yale? It would be nice to hear that perspective.
For sure
Yes. I like that idea Josh should do it
I agree with most of what you’re saying but when you say test score doesn’t matter than much then suggest you need a top 1% score to even be looked at is contradictory. It matters a lot and very few people can get anywhere near mid 1400s
Some good points, but relying on a 1440 SAT score for admission to a Top 20 school would be a bad approach.
This was a fantastic video, thank you

Would average or relatively good colleges (not like Ivy League) accept you if say you score like 1100-1300 on the SAT's?
