Yea I got some growth on BeatStars edited cool artwork, hashtags, but it was people on BeatStars doing like 10 beats for a dollar. I ended up posting like 165 beats in less than a year using RUclips when I did it and IG I just said f it, the quality wasn’t even good for guys that were doing that. I would say the saturation helped them so that’s good. It’s just hard to compete with tha. So I made my own website. I figured if I barely made money on BeatStars I might as well just bring traffic into my own website where I can customize it more and run more ads. Ultimately you gotta do what works for you. Maybe blowup on TikTok or something or draw in traffic from RUclips like cash money AP did before he blew up. I like what the guy did with airbit, that technique with the free beats does help. I did a buy 3 get 1 free, free beat packs etc.
Bro the first beat i ever sold was a beat made from a loop pack you made. I was 15 and sold the beat for $100 im 25 now not that that matters lol… i will forever appreciate you for that first sale though! Thank you!!!
Improvement in production comes from many places, but I find that it's a lot easier to discover new tools to add to your tool belt when you're doing a beat every day. Each new track is an opportunity to try something different, which could potentially lead to a more unique sound. I also love to imagine how it feels to find a new producer you enjoy and they have a massive back catalogue you can listen to. Every day it gets bigger and better!
9:23 That's too true. I fell into that trap, thinking a beat a day (or something close) was impossible and that producers were just capping. I was dead wrong. You've helped me break out of that mindset.
I'm very Grateful for your PoV, Pain... even though i'm not specifically pursing a career of selling beats online, seeing and understanding the other side of how producers PROPERLY run a business is motivating and reassuring. Your content gives me hope for the future of the music business! Much Love Always, my G!
this is my new favorite channel. ive been a dj since the 90s and a producer for decades and ive never made anything out of it because i didnt know what to do i only care about the music. butnow im a stay at home dad and have nothing but time and id like to at least have some income from my lifes work coming in to help with bills
I love your content. Im at a very early stage of beat making. Very little traffic and no sales but im just enjoying it. 3 a week is about as much as i can post but im enjoying it because i could barely even use a laptop nevermind a DAW. Seen you post about some of the hate you get on here 🤯 fucking wild! Keep up the good work 💪
What I appreciate watching your channel is that you're always honest. Sometimes things you say aren't easy to hear/accept but they always come from a good place, so it can't be held against you. You're an important character in this industry if only for the knowledge you share. As for the beats, I like them too. Very useful video as always.
I’ve been loving Joe Gautrey’s videos, he’s so transparent with everything and it’s genuinely refreshing. It’s also inspiring for me to see that hard work really does pay off
Im currently trying to start my own genre its basically cinema type beats mixed with trap im hoping i can go far with it stamping your own genre is a whole nother level
Another element is content creation and journaling his journey. Because he put himself out there, his channel is now being reviewed by a big platform, which will give him a boost as well as a bit of social proof. So now if dude wants to supplement his income, he can also create a course and use the fact that Pain1 shouted him out to build trust. Moral of the story, start now, do everything you can, and journal your process!! Everything will fall into place with consistency. Keep pressin!
Im a 15 yr old watching this. Im being taught a lot of good things from this video and ill use these when selling my beats yo. :) im so glad i found ur video
I’m on a sync licensing journey and that’s a different beast in its own but this is a great video to watch and see how the beat selling business is going nowadays. Quality and quantity is the truth in everything we create. 🔥
This is great! One of the best gems yet is have a type beat channel but with an artist that isn’t quite established and/or looked for all that much yet. 💎 Bout to restructure my channel this week.
I'm digging your insight and appreciate you posting it. I've loved music all my life. I started as a DJ but that just made me want to produce more. I got laid off during the pandemic and went all in. For 2 years I hit it hard. I like r&b and electronic. Prince is my main influence. I found myself often wondering what I was doing wrong. I found watching interviews and rehearsal footage was a good way to find out how people made it. He often said he made a song a day, so I set the goal to do the same. I have a robust catalog and was somewhat clueless to the business side. I'm learning through videos like this one you did. Thank you for your Vid. Looking forward to learning more.
A fourth of the way in, I said “why am I only listening to this, get busy and make your first beat of the day!” Powered up the MPC, I got so into my beat, I missed most of the rest of what was said in this video. But it must have been good because it’s 8am, and my beat is done! I’ll listen to this again later while I am commuting.
Just finished second listen! Awesome content, I love that it is very current. Can’t wait to the end of my day to make another beat and progress on my journey!
Keep in contact and respond soon is a good pro tip. Be straight up and to the point. People don't need paragraphs at a time. Simply a quick and understandable response is a good way to get the sale.
Alot of kits will come with a kick drum or a bass hit and it is only one note for the push pad, like G minor or C major. That exact kick drum in all the notes can give your beat a while new sound. G, G, G... G minor, G minor, G minor. Bass hits for the measure.
man you guys are both dropping dimes. Thanks so much for being encouraging in this community man, so many vampires trying to suck the enthusiasm out of us. You earned a sub in me!
Just made a new Beatstars today and took 3 loops i made and made them into beats and uploaded them i'm grareful for the new subscription model of $19.99/yr right now i'm aiming for 35 beats a week atleast til i get 200 beats up i have like 38 more loops made so imma finish all of the and make more and im excited for the journey and to see the growth
damn hard to believe you get hated on like that! I'm fairly new at this I just put my head down and work and listen to successful people such as yourself willing to give their knowledge and advice 🙌 much appreciated, the mindset is easy to see, what separates haters on the sideline from those actually doing it 😤 also appreciate what you said about not worrying too much about the current sound/trend, altho still good to be familiar and maybe use some elements, be true to yourself at the end of the day
Me in 2021: I thought, 300 Songs, and 100 beats in 3-4 years were enough, so far. And some Songs/Beats even did get me customers. Then i procrastinate in Winter 2021/22 and Came back in nov22.😉 Really motivating Guys, thank U for that. Me in 2023: keep IT goin ! #PEACE
Shiny red thing is a Golden Age Pre73 preamp, budget 1073. I used one until I could buy the real thing, they're not quite the same but it's a cool pre to drive for some extra color, its a good box for the price.
I been doin this for dam near 20years made plenty $$ offline, sold beats for all types of prices. I'm trying to get into this online game to reach more artist in different places.
If you're still wondering, that shiny red thing in his video is a Golden Age pre 73 pre amp. (poor mans BAE 1073) mine still works great! Thank you for your insightful videos and education. Very much appreciated!
Man Pain! I've been watching your videos since the Acid Pro era! Even saw you DJ at a few spots in the city at open mic nights. Learned so much. Thanks for all the info. Keep up the great work!
This motivates me! I’ve been getting serious lately and uploading a beat video everyday on IG and getting a lot of traction out of nowhere. It’s cliche to say but consistency really is key! Starting to focus more on my beat store next and I’ll save the weekends for planning the next week ahead! Thanks DJ Pain! 🫡
Thank you for your words of encouragement. Homie was awesome for real. A breath of fresh air. I made 200 beats last year after buying and learning the machine system properly. I'm about to push a hard line with my talents
Showing love to the customers is #1 way to increase sales. It sounds counter intuitive but in my experience a sure fire way to turn a free download into a sale is to give them a mid tier lease for free, and offer everyone who spent $100 a custom free or at a very big discount (40%-60% off) I mean really the prices are entirely market driven, you’re not actually giving away $300 you’re doing what you love for someone who loves what you do, and if that isn’t enough I hardly ever actually give anything away for free, when you do a good job and treat people well they want to do the same for you.
This video is a true gem and is also very motivational 🖤. I've been doubting myself, but this has opened my eyes. Thank you for making these kinds of videos, man 🙏
Great Video … one of the problem I have is that I do House Afro house , Ballads and Spanish music and it’s because I love them all and I do it cause I love doing different kind of music … I see always up tempo music but it’s hard to find Spanish Ballads production videos and where to sell that style …Hint Hint lol … Keep up the good work 😊
I was always told in business and from experience... that Dec to Feb you should take a break and not expect much in those few months because of the holidays being close together. then sales will pick back up closer to spring because of SXSW... people are getting ready for performances and spins in clubs. Me shooting videos always pick up closer to spring. the demand for music and videos are really high around the springtime.
Really like you style dude! So calm in your delivery! Not speaking at a thousand miles an hour like some of the other lunatics in this field. I’m starting out on this road myself! Sub’d
I'm guessing.... make beat packs, maybe 20-50 beats per pack, and stagger release a month or two apart, or release 1 per month to get customers in a routine. Great video. I'm glad you stumbled upon a channel with less subs. Like you said, most people say you have a "leg up" and are able to sell beats because you have a bigger channel and more exposure. Seeing someone on the come up shows the good with the bad. Also, I'm starting to realize that we a music creators need to think beyond the music and think of our art as content. Make the music but market it like content.
I realized that I was being outworked, so a couple days ago I committed to making a beat everyday and posting it no matter how good it is for 106 days. just to get in the habit of finishing a beat and being active on social media daily.
Thanks for information i appreciate it also i have a question? The layering instruments is a nice way to get a more full sound. Orchestral. Meshed and merged is a nice nice effect
Also complimentary instruments are what make or break a song in general. Beats and drums are the same. Cymbols and hats and ticks also.
Alot of kits will come with a kick drum or a bass hit and it is only one note for the push pad, like G minor or C major. That exact kick drum in all the notes can give your beat a while new sound. G, G, G... G minor, G minor, G minor. Bass hits for the measure.
