The only F-100 Super Sabre I've seen flying, was at the USAFE RAF Alconbury airshow here in the UK back in the 80s. Also saw the Lockheed T-33, Northrop T-38 and F-86 at the same time and . Great to see the F100 flying again on this video, brings back some happy memories from that time.
If you have ever slept next to the Hun in a hardstand while on alert duty, you learned to sleep through an abrupt "bang-bang-bang" noise in the middle of the night. A heavily loaded F-100 would tend to settle on its struts as night time cooling lowered the pressure of the compressed nitrogen inside. Due to "stiction," one strut dropping usually led to another strut shaking loose until equilibrium was established again. Then there was the clanking of brake discs when the airplane was under tow.
Used to love watching F-100s fly over my grandfather's house in Fort Wayne; they would go directly over his house as they went in to land at Baer Field. Used to land in four ship formation, one peeling off at a time. And they were LOW! Saw the same with F-4Es. Grandpa died in '86, didn't get to see the F-16s or current A-10s.
Remember as a young boy I used to watch dozens of F-100s shooting touch and goes at Clark AFB in the Philippines. Love that plane. Used to call it the lead sled.
when i was in the AF, my first plane I crewed out of tech school was the T-38 at Laredo AFB, then the F-100d at Tuy Hoa AB in RVN. then finally the F-4D at Holloman AFB. I enjoyed working on all of them.
I was in the JROTC and my instructor Major Montague flew the Super Sabre in Vietnam and witnessed a fellow F-100 pilot do a blind strafing run against an enemy heavy gun position and successfully destroyed the operator(s) of that gun; on the other hand, he also saw another F-100 do a similar strafing run, but the Super Sabre very gently continue a steady descent straight into the ground short of the target in what Major Montague described as the pilot obviously taking a bullet or flak to the head
I'd love to see that F-100 flying in person someday. I don't recall ever seeing one in the air, even as a kid. I never got to see a QF-100 drone in the air, I guess I missed them during the USAF base visits when I was in JROTRC in high school in the 80s. I saw them on the ground at Tyndall, but never one in the air.
Chuck Thornton out west will rebuild you one....check the tail number on the one in this video....last Part of it is TC. He did this one. Probably 1 mil plus to purchase, not to mention maintenance, about as much as a Lear 25 to operate, and of course the INSURANCE requirementS. I want 2!!!!!
Like you String man I love the Super Saber as well. We saw the plane at Edwards AFB when it was used by the T birds. We lived nearby in Palmdale, Ca. and would go to air shows at Edwards for a Armed Forces Day. The T birds were what everyone went to see. The Jets looked super cool in the T bird livery.
Amazing video! Enjoyed hearing these old birds in flight! Thought this video would have received a 10/10 rating from me if the helicopters had been absent!
At 2:40, that little kid is me with my grandpa! My grandpa was actually in the military and worked on the F100 that you see taking off right there! Not that exact plane but I’m pretty sure you know what I mean

Little awkward for chock removal on the "Sled". Beautiful bird though, glad the Collins foundation saved it. The F-5 sure is a little hotrod, very spirited display. Enjoyed the vid, thanks!
When I was a child I didn’t care much about the F-5, but with all those 4th and 5th gen fighters around she sure is one cute bird! I still have the pleasure to see them on an almost daily basis (Switzerland).
That's not the Collings F-100. The aircraft in the video is owned and flown by Dean Cutshall (AKA Cutter) the Collingswood F-100 is in SEA Camo and painted up like Col Bud Day's Aircraft in Vietnam.
...Question is, why was the chopper flying at all during the jet flybys?....seems like it would have been an unnecessary potential risk for a mid-air collision?.....
Why is that damn copter flying around? SNAFU on air opps here. They missed the best part when the F-100 lit AB. Those things sound like a howitzer going off. We had them here in Mo. ANG. You could tell when they were operating. We lived 8 miles away and man could you hear them.
The F-100 used a pulse type afterburner that either was on or off. Later airplanes like the F-4 had a progressive type afterburner that came on low and could be gradually throttled up and down. That's why the F-100 went "bang" when the burner suddenly lit up and it immediately went into full AB. The main difference was the exhaust nozzle. The F-100 used a simple nozzle design that could be either all the way opened or all the way closed. Later airplanes use a progressive nozzle that opens and closes gradually like the petals of a flower.
In the 1970's I was in the Air Guard and got two rides in the back seat of an F-100F. It was kind of a shame to see the F-100F in the video flying with an empty back seat.
Cool videos. It is hard to believe there are guys that can afford to buy and maintain these toys. Has to be very expensive. I am glad they are able to do it.

Beautiful to see these old warbirds fly! Though not unusual for its day, I never liked that over-sized national insignia on the F-5. it just looks strange and out of place. A smaller one and more centered on the intake would look more balanced, like the T-38 had. Still awesome to see them fly!

the sounds of modern jets are crazy, because it was the third of july and i had gone to mall with my family. We were close to the entrance when out of nowhere 3 f16s came flying over us which im pretty sure weren't supersonic but they made this big noise and vibration that was so loud that the ground shook, they were pretty close to the ground as well,i was scared like a b*tch
That’s how the afterburner kicking in. I don’t think those early afterburners came on gradually like today’s afterburners. They kick in with full force all at once.
So, as a pilot, F-35 mechanic, and airplane/aviation nut I'm curious...Are these active military pilots flying these birds? Or are they somehow purchased, restored & flown by civilians/retired military? How is it that a civilian can fly a supersonic military jet?
I worked on F-100's back in the 1970's. Back then it cost the government $1,000 just to start one up and get it off the ground. My understanding is that the Collins Foundation sells 30 minute rides in its F-100 for $8,000.

Just glad there are people with deep enough pockets to keep these birds flying. Great video!
Had not seen a F-100 Super Sabre in a long time. Nice to see. Always great to see these old birds in the sky.
I knew the F-86 and F-100 are beautiful but I hadn’t quite realised how pretty and fast the F5E was. Three stunning aeroplanes
I saw the F-100 in Fort Wayne this past weekend and I freaking loved hearing that signature bang when the pilot would turn on the afterburner
Man I love watching these old warbirds strut their stuff, that F86 what a beauty.
Man it's so cool seeing the super Sabre
Excellent video with no crazy music hiding the raw sound of jet engines.

To see this incredible range of different aircraft is sheer madness, and probably only possible in the United States.
