YOUR videos give me a real insight into fashion. Before your channel, I saw fashion and I love style, but I never really followed what was going on in the fashion world. You intellectualise fashion and really show its depth. That's what attracts me to anything, theoretical depth, and no other RUclips channel I have come across talks this holistically about the themes and theories and concepts in fashion. Before this I had no idea how intellectually rich the world of fashion could be, so thanks for these excellent videos!!!

    1:03:21 A piece of paper/fabric is actually 3D.
“A sheet of paper may seem to be two-dimensional, but because it does have a measurable (if tiny) depth, it's actually three-dimensional.”
“Because your paper is flat, everything you draw on it is two-dimensional.”
Every piece of clothing is 3D.
You look at 3D piece from different angles and each gives different view.
On the other hand, you view 2D from 1 angle.
    So a bump is 3D that’s

Kei Ninomiya's runway show is still running in my head; I'm absolutely obsessed with it. To me it was his most nostalgic, and dare I say, his most pubescent collection. It feels very liminal, and I was so inspired, especially with his use of holography and other optical materials.

Yohji's work and the concept of Ma is also elusive in the world of fashion to me. However, coming from the world of architecture not so much. When you're designing architecture, you're not designing a building/public space/furniture/interior etc, you are "containing" space. It's an abstract concept taught to us very early in our design journey. Interestingly, cubism was also something that we learned quickly after.

Designers I loved from this video: 1. Undercover, for being really touching in the way they explained something I feel quite a lot (and it's nice to know some men get it); 2. Ninomiya, for the kaleidoscopic plate metal effect; 3. Givenchy, for the beading on the cat dress (because you don't see that cat first); 4. Tom Brown, for the ravens in so many materials, for the big moth cape thing, for doing medieval-slash-1950s style overshoes; ArdAzAei, for the geometric quality of the clothes in terms of the patterns on the fabric and the pattern of the fabric.
Fun fact, I learned recently that hennins were based on the headdresses worn by Mongol women, particularly aristocratic Mongol women

those Hermes clothes!!!! This might just be me, and if it's Too Far then Oops and Mea Culpa, but another aspect of that collection, certainly by incorporating the studs but also through certain other elements, is its SUPER understated incorporation of kink and spcl lesbian kink? Like idk: maybe I'm reading too much into it/seeing what I want to see, or maybe it's an association that's simply unavoidable with leather and leather-adjacent references like equestrian sports and cycling, but it's amazing to me that they managed to make these little elements which scream kink to me so sedated and refined and yet still apparent! This is straight-up Fashion-Alchemy :D :D :D

As a YY fan and someone who has read so much about him, his clothes, spoken to people who supposedly get it and people like me who don't get it, I can say with certainty that without the man explaining his collections, I still don't get it. 😂
What has changed through all this research is appreciation of the craft, the work itself, and for those small number pieces I have from him, a deeper appreciation.

Loved all the geometrically inspired collections; Yohji Yamamoto & cubism where the square pokects turned into draping; Junya Watanabe and the exploration of the transition from 2D to 3D; ArdAzAei and how the geometry of crystal structures inspired a lot of patterns. Especially the last one, more than just geometric as in "there are shapes" it feels very mathematical to me

I've watched the Undercover show like 20 times since it aired cause it left me sobbing again and again. I wanted to inderstand why. I am aware that my reaction was probably individual and it most likely just hit the right spot. I find the collection such a dignified understanding of what woman's dressing is expected to be all at the same time: sexy and gentle, both practical and sculpting, comfortable but formal, casual but intentional too. The show is both easy and impossible to put togheter from clothes that might be in any (middle-class) woman's wardrobe. I also appreaciate the tote bag element, which of course is old, but seems so 'unperformative' in this context. It really feels like the models were on their way home, even a little weary from work. I also understand that the collection is playing into the image of a certain-class woman - meaning the social commentary is restricted. A more diverse casting in terms of sizing and age would also be in place, but the show is very openly subjective, admiting the lack of dramatic changes, or power to incite change for that matter. I appreciate that the show (both clothes and the poem) is not paternal. There is no sense of resignation either, but a proof of life-long stamina of women.
btw great work Bliss and D, thank you.

that sacai/Abe collection... Dresses and coats: Two Gr8 Tastes that taste Gr8 TOGETHER :D :D Also, the way she plays around with zettai ryoiki in this, completely subsuming the skirt in the coat and the stockings in the boot, is Cheeky+Masterful+Thought-Provoking! I also loved the, Idk if there's a word for it, "swishy" elements to the coats? Like how the hems on some of the looks bounce and flap around. And how the fit of the boots wasn't skin-tight: that's an interesting choice that, for me at least, brought to mind more practical types of boots like rainboots or wading-boots.

There was one part where you thanked Daniela for how she explained a certain collection, and it made me realize that because Bliss is always the public face of the videos, i unconsciously ascribe the words to him. I don't know if the way you two write things together would allow for a strict delineation between Bliss/Daniela writing, but it might be nice to see that as one listens. I make my clothes... slow fashion is my motto and I wish we lived in a world where we could wear all sorts of weird clothes and get done with trends. I absolutely hate trends and waste. I am a fabric addict, so much so that I go to fabric stores just to touch fabrics. But I don't appreciate the high fashion waste either... the exclusivity, the snub of it... and logos... oh my... I hate logos. I went to fashion school to learn the rules so I could break them all. I believe clothes are not self expression if you don't make them yourself or if you don't commission someone to bring your vision to life. Any clothes you buy are a vision and expression of someone else that you happen to agree with. And most people we are trends that don't align with anything but with the desire to make money on the part of who creates and the desire to show off and feel part of something on the part of the consumer. I really wish that going to a semesters with your own sketch would comeback. I am 57, and I grew up having my sketches made into my clothes by a semestres, by my mom, or an auntie, latter, around 9yo I started making my own with the help of my mom. I would love to make stuff for other people, make them feel what is like to wear their own vision, and if they love logos, I would use their own logo that they would create, their own monogram, their own family moto, their own soul. We would not have fast fashion if. People understand that clothes, not fashion, clothes is art is you allow it to come from yourself. So, I am frustrated, mad, and disappointed with anything to do with luxury or fast fashion. I will just keep making my own clothes very toned down to not call attention because society have a very strict idea on how a mum after her 50s should and should not wear. I know I shouldn't care, but I like to be invisible, but if everyone would just dress for their own satisfaction, I am sure I would just blend in.
Oh my.... bla bla bla bla.... anyways, all that just to say I love your channel and I will make sure to binge and look in your subscription program for more content. This first video is simply amazing (first for me) thank you for putting so much into a free content.

37:06 the placement of the position of the pocket is naturally the place where the hand falls, in the winter, in order to avoid the garment touching any objects like a car, where the fabric can risk getting dirty or wet and also in windy conditions, the coat tends to open in that very place, and the hand keeps the garment from opening. One day, there must be a place for the position of the coat can be raised when going up a set of stairs, as the foot can have a tendency to step on the corner of the coat and can cause an accident. But yes, it was very thoughtful, the placement of the hand and the pocket!

I watch these long videos in pieces but they are always so educational and interesting. My favorite was the Enfants Riches as well.

That first ERD look at 49:25 is just a complete copy of a Christopher Nemeth post sack jacket from the 80s.

    • @BlissFoster
      @BlissFoster  6 месяцев назад +1

Hmmm, I don’t see it 🤔 mostly because it looked like Nemeth’s jacket curves at the bottom of the hem so much. Am I looking at the wrong thing?

@@BlissFoster Thank you for your reply!
It seems like my replies keep getting deleted for some reason. Maybe because I am posting links to the pictures?
The jacket they are copying is a unique piece made for Mark Lebon in the mid-80s. It used to have a plastic sheet sewn onto it, but which has since worn off. There are some remains of it on the hem, pockets and collar. They exhibited it at DSML in 2018.
There are some pictures of it on Nemeth's instagram, though quite far down at this point. There's a clearer photo of it on Outi Les Pyy.

I still cannot become a patron because Brazil remains a financial hell. But I almost cried throughout the whole thing. Yes, I am just starting in fashion, I know next to nothing. But, as a fellow MA in Literary Criticism, I understand your videos better than most other fashion "educators" here on RUclips. So, cheers from this distant land. And keep it cool.
