  • The Philadelphia trolleybus system, or trackless trolley system as it is known by its operator, forms part of the public transportation network serving Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. It opened on October 14, 1923, and is now the second-longest-lived trolleybus system in the world. One of only five such systems currently operating in the U.S., it presently comprises three lines, and is operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), with a fleet of 38 trolleybuses. The three surviving routes serve North and Northeast Philadelphia and connect with SEPTA's Market-Frankford rapid transit line. ~Wikipedia

Nice video. It's been a while since I went to Philly, good to see that ETBs are still a thing there. Some notes though: At 1:20, after one of the poles had disconnected (good thing that the retrievers worked well), why didn't the driver switch to diesel engine until the next stop? Not to mention the (unnecessary) delay and creating a road hazard, he underwent some risk while restoring the pole in the middle of a rather busy street (while lacking reflective vest and gloves, but whatever..).

I've been read that Rt. 66 has the only express trolleybus lines in the US. You can see the lines merging and splitting at 4:10 and 4:15 and the three visible overhead pairs looking out the window at 5:15.

They're called trackless trolleys, and are most useful in that they're able to go around double parked cars and trucks. Unlike fixed track trolleys.

      W. Saleem Thompkins yeah but older steel trolleys can push these new cars out the way. Just say a truck hit them.

Thanks for pointing out that in Philly they are called trackless trolleys. Born and raised there, and never heard the term trolleybus until I visited San Francisco.

Trolley poles my dude. They predate the pantographs and last longer. Them PRT cars used to do 80mph with them poles and they can last almost for ever

I would hate having to drive one of these ! And by the way, Philadelphia (Septa) has one of the weirdest transit systems. Why not just run buses regularly like almost every other major American city? Trackless trolleys? Pointless in my opinion. Look at 0:55 ...is that even safe for the driver to have to always do that?

    • @vadimharlamov176

They are quieter, energetically more efficient than ICE buses, simpler to maintain, last longer, do not emit pollutants. Sure, there are battery electric buses today, but those are expensive and the batteries must be replaced every 5 years or so, with huge environmental liability. The driver IMHO commited some irregulations by stopping in the middle of the street and not using a reflective vest when he could turn the diesel engine on and proceed to the next stop. But that attitude (and the overhead wires conditions) are on SEPTA, not so much the vehicle defficiency.

The 75 is currently operating as bus, and has been all year. I, too, have been avoiding videoing that line for that reason.

Да и вообще, у этих троллейбусов есть ДВС. Мог бы доехать до следующей остановки, а там уже ставить штанги.

These E40LFR buses are clearly using overhead wires so they are trolley buses, trackless trolleys etc.
