Have you tried any Viltrox lenses? What do you think of this 40mm?

    • @cameraprepper7938

No and will not, I like high end Lenses that can "last a lifetime", so I have the excellent Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA which I got last year used for US $215 (taxes included) in very good condition. I have all my life been very environmental and my mother (though not rich) taught me to buy good quality because it will last much longer.

I have not tried the Viltrox 40mm 2.5, it could be a good budget buy for a new Lens, but I prefer higher build quality, so either an other new more expensive Lens or a used one. The Sony 40mm 2.5 seems like a very good Lens, good build quality, fast autofocus and good image quality, there are also Samyang 45mm 1.8 AF, Sigma 45mm 2.8 DG DN and the Zeiss Batis Distagon 40mm 2.0, but I do prefer the focal Length 35mm, so I have the excellent Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA which I got last year used for US $215 (taxes included) in very good condition, I also have the outstanding Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which image quality are second to none.

@@cameraprepper7938 As long as u have a motor & electronics in a lens, don't expect it to last for your lifetime, supposing u r still young. I've been shooting w/ 40mm's since the mid-80's. The max I'd pay for the sony is 450, maybe 400 usd. I have had my eyes on the Viltrox 40 for the last couple of months after watching a few reviews w/ samples & AF evaluations. I'm getting the Viltrox, nice to have an AF40 for a change.

@cameraprepper7938 You can believe of course what you want, but any modern lens design lens (hence with AF) is about to fail - sooner or later. Don't believe it`? Think Canon RF 28-70/F2.8L USM - from 1993-2013....no more USM AF spare parts being avialable, this is a manual focus bonker these days. I know, bc i owned it. Which lenses would last forever, albeit with some TLC - all manual focus lenses, only metal, rubber(ring) and glass lens elements, they can last for 50+ or even way more decades, if handled properly. All AF drive lenses are going to failure - sooner or later, depending onto the usage, wear & tear...go figure...and if for instance, one day your 35/2.8 ZA AF fails, you can be sure, Sony doesn't have any spare parts anymore being avialable. Mind you, this lens came out into fall 2013, together with the A7 original...have fun, enjoy your 35/2.8 Sony Zeiss.
PS: I hate scheduled obsolescence. What can being fixed, will be fixed, not trashed away by myself.

For me the minimum focus distance and faster AF would be big fctors which the Sony is better. Especually since you can get one on eBay for as low as $475 now. At the same time theres no harm or foul in a cheap beater lens that can do 85% of what the more expensive lens can do and you dont have to worry about caring for it too much.

I think Sony 40mm f2.5 is a great little lens. It pairs nicely with A7cii, im enjoying using it every time , its my go-to combo those days.
I did use viltrox preciously on my Fuji, 27mm 1.2, to be precise. This lens is just Wow , is that good. I wish they would make full frame version.
I just got viltrox 20mm f.8 for my A7cii, the build quality, price, and size are in pair with the 40mm version.

I have the 56mm f/1.7 for Fuji X Mount, which is APS-C so 84mm equiv but it looks and arrives in the same manner, I love it. I nice small light lens. I love 40mm as well but we're lacking anything new, small and cheap at 27mm (40mm equiv) on X mount so I'm thinking of switching brands and that'll be based on a good 40mm.

I’ve not tried the 40mm - although I did own the Sony G 40mm - but I have just acquired an ‘almost’ new 16mm f/1.8 Viltrox FE. I’ve only shot a few tests but so far it seems good and has a well built feel. Gives an interesting view of the world, especially architecture but also close-up portraits, The little LCD screen is novel. Shows focus distance AF/MF and aperture.

I have the 20mm f2.8 Nikon Z and it's a good lens for not a lot (£145). Much lighter and compact than Nikon's 20mm f1.8 so a good choice if you want something light and compact for travel etc. Optically not as good as the Nikon (which costs near a £1000) but still very acceptable when stopped down 1 or 2 stops. I guess the same would apply to Sony.

On a sony aps-c u get an equivalent 60mm which is def. a good f l for portraits. My most used m-mount lenses
on m-L bodies (w/o the frame lines) are the 40 f/2 Minolta Rokkor & the 40 Summicron since the 80's
& they had been used on an a6000 for at least 4 or 5 yrs until I got the aps-c TTartisan 25 f2 (equiv.38 mm) which is very good & cheap except the focus throw which is a bit too short. The 2 m-mt 40's of course remain faithful 40
on an a7iv. My seldom used m- Angenieux 28 f3.5 would nicely mimic a 42mm on apsc, it's softer than the 28 Emmarit which I no longer own, but has its (Fr) character. I should use it today or tomorrow sunday. My 2 40's have
convex & bigger front elements than the new sony wides which have tiny & strangely CONCAVE front surfaces.

Actually it has grandfathers in the 40's made for the Leica CL in the early 70's (both Leitz & Rokkor )
& later in the early 80's a Rokkor for the Minolta CLE which I should have bought but didn't , trying to wait for the next version w/winder & auto rewind which all p&s at that time already had. This never happened & production of the CLE ended only after a few more yrs. Film loading was so much more sensible & it had better synch speed too.

I've had the viltrox 20mm for some months now. I really enjoy it. As no lens is perfect I focus on the quality for the price and the 20mm definetly has that going for it. I find I don't mind the materials too much as I'm never going to be a National Geographic photographer in that I won't be in extreme climates. Now that's not to say that I don't have lenses that cost as much as camera bodies but these Viltrox (and Samyang tiny lens series) lenses take the sting out of impulse buys and buyers remorse. And the 20mm Viltrox has had three updates to the firmware so far; one of which I did this very morning (12 Sept '24). I imagine the 40mm will follow a similar bit of support. (Sony A7RIII)
