I returned the Nikon and bought the Viltrox and i couldn't be happier. I'm usually a Nikkor fanboy, but I didn't like the 40mm at all. Soft and mushy. Apart from the aperture, I like everything about the Viltrox better, it's such a nice everyday lens to walk around with. I've also got their 85mm and like that even more!
Great review! The midframe and corner performance on the Nikkor lens is surprisingly poor, and I prefer the slower but more accurate focusing of the Viltrox.
I like how politely you tried to find any pros in this Nikkor :) I owned this blur factory and was very happy to get rid of it (more because of misfocused shots rather than softness itself). Didn't tried Viltrox though, but seems this should be a great replacement. Also FOV difference is enormous. That's definitely not a half of angle or 1-2mm difference. Seems Viltrox is more towards 35mm (another plus for me), but i hate 2.5 aperture on a fix when zooms are f2.8... Anyways, thanks for nice review.

Thank you for really comprehensive yet easy to understand comparison! I'd pick Viltrox just because Nikon has plastic mount. I don't care how much "weight" cough...money...cough... they saved, plastic mount is just stupid. I broke one in the days on F mount. Admittedly, it was my fault, but it wasn't something that would even faze metal mount. I'd gladly pay 30$ more for Nikon with metal mount.
@MrSimonj1970 I heard that too, but as far as I know, I'd have to do it myself and potentially break it. Not to mention, I'd have to spend more money on the adapter...
I’m pleased to see this review - back to basics? I would be most grateful if you would use this clear format to review again the Zeiss Milvus and Otus series. Do you think that they represent glass that’s even good enough for a 60Mp sensor, or something from RED?

I don't own any Nikon equipment, though I basically shot film on my FE2, FA, F100 and just moved to Canon with digital. Nikon made and continues to to make first class equipment, and perhaps the results of this comparison simply serves to show the quality currently being offered by Viltrox.
The Nikkor is not your landscape or architecture lens, it's your walkaround lens. It is not built for accuracy or or detail, it is meant to capture the feel of a situation. So to me the Nikkor is clearly a "nifty fourty". Something you bring everywhere to shoot memories. It is not supposed to be your professional lens. And I think it is one of the best lenses in the Nikon system because of that.

Vitrox AF is slower than Nikon, another AF choice is Ttartisan which is faster and optics is either better or comparable.
@@chingo3625 I don't find it any slower than Nikon lenses in practise TBH, and it's pretty accurate even wide open

Agree, I don't understand how Viltrox can do it better than Nikon can, but I get a better hit rate in focus with the Viltrox!

Yes, it is hard to get excited when a prime's maximum aperture is at or near the equivalent maximum aperture of zooms.

I read that you can swap the mount from an ftz adaptor if that's any help. I prefer the Viltrox all round personally.

That Nikkor 40mm never goes on sale here in Canada so the Viltrox is almost exactly half the price of the Nikon lens.
