Power too, which I think is true to reality. Which is one of the morals of the story… people are people regardless of their position, status and stature. It’s a common thread thru all the GOT books, as well as power corrupting, that power lies where the people think it lies, and you can take as much of it as the people allow… excepting things like magic/blood magic/ dragons, which ARE power that overrules everything by force, and that power of this sort is “the wrong way” to gain and hold power, it’s not free, in fact it’s cost is always very high, too high and it can’t be held indefinitely by anyone, nor is anyone “special” enough to be the exception. Oh yea, and that’s gods aren’t real, that religion is wholly a human construct used to manipulate people into giving their power up to “the gods” which are infact just people who already have the money and the power.

What if Pycelle is actually a sort of foil to Varys, both claiming to act for the good of the realm, but Pycelle genuinely wants to make decisions that lead to peace and prosperity. The reasons could be entirely selfish in the sense that peace everywhere means a life of ease and comfort for Pycelle, His adoration of Tywin could even come down to Tywin simply being the most competent person at running the kingdom that he knew. His grief at Tywin’s death could be simply for the loss of that person.
And of course, if Pycelle aimed for peace, he would certainly have foiled some of Varys’ attempts to sow unrest over the years. Varys killed him to remove a competent decision maker, but also for revenge.

He always supports the Lannisters. I think I remember that Pycelle used to belong to a House in the Westerlands, before he became a Maester and gave up his last name. There was another that was supposed to be Grand Maester, but he died suddenly and then Pycelle got it. He also gave Jon Arryn high amounts of Milk of the Poppy so that he would pass easily instead of trying to save him with purging. Maybe he knew that Arryn knew about Cersei and Jaime and didn’t try too hard to save him.

The show actually did something really interesting with Pycelle. Theres a deleted scene between he and Tywin where Tywin scolds him and he pretends to be extremely anxious and fumbles his words. Tywin calls him out for it and tells him to stop pretending as he knows Pycelle is only pretending to be this anxious but loyal fool. Pycelle then quickly straightens up and begins talking with a crispness and confidence not shown in any other Pycelle scene. Almost like he went from a lowly servant to a Highborn lord in a snap. I think this scene points to the maester/hightower conspiracy. Wouldnt be surprised if Pycelle is a Hightower.

I always thought Pycelle was tytos Lannister’s youngest brother, so really he was tywins uncle. He’s loyal to house lannister because he is one, and looks after his nephews.
I always assumed this was Tywin’s inside man, even when he was younger in the service of the mad king, it was pycelle who fed him information and plotted with him.
Who told Tywin about the king schtooping his wife? Who paved the way for success? Who taught Tywin all the little things about power and family?

I like this theory. Especially since Tywin certainly did not learn any of his nature from his own father. I find it hard that any person would be so absolutely loyal to the Lannisters while being treated so poorly, only because they where a lickspittle. Especially for someone who is talented enough to gain his position.
It does make me wonder why Cersei and Tyrion didn't bitch about his being a relation. Maybe he is a secret bastard? Granpapy was a bit of a slute.

  • @ashleyofnaath

I think Pycelle's efforts to play kingmaker went beyond counseling Aerys to open the gates...I suspect the name Elia called before her death was Pycelle's, because he falsely agreed to help she and the children escape should the city fall. And unfortunately for Elia, due to her frailty from ill health and having just given birth, she was probably reliant on him as opposed to being able to plot for herself. Could you imagine her desperation as she screamed for him, realizing the help wasn't coming? And how cruel Pycelle is to put her in that position? But as he said, all he did he did for House Lannister so he won't lose a wink of sleep I guess. I think Varys tried to get Tyrion to see this, but Tyrion was already convinced the name was Gregor's because he knew Gregor killed her- so he could't see what Varys was trying to tell him. Great video!

He's lucky not to have been killed by Ned when he's army turned up! which now that I think of it how could Ned have gotten to the Red keep just after Jamie had killed the pyromancers and aerys as that would mean he's army was outside Kingslanding with the Lannister army unless they used different gates but then who let them in? either way Tywin should have been stripped of title for sacking the city and not joining the rebellion and sent to the Wall.
