at the prelims he built up perfectly to the high note at the final "shangri-LA" at 3:06 (and hit it), still wonder why he did no go for it at the big stage. even more so since he hit 2:41 perfectly

According to the ACTI website, he kept flying back to the Netherlands during Eurovision week for some lucrative gigs, which ragged his voice. The high note in the last chorus is in tune but not very held or clear, and he must have decided then he wasn't going for the big note at the end 😄
I did laugh at the story of him chickening out of the end note. Clearly he wasn't feeling it, but you can see him weighing it up until the last second.
