  • This is the first time I doubled the focal length on my Celestron NexStar 8SE telescope with a 2x Barlow Lens. I was really pleased with the features I was able to see on the lunar surface. I hope this video can serve as a tutorial of others who want to try astrophotography on the moon through a telescope. Here is more info on the hardware and software:
    Imaging Telescope:
    Celestron NexStar 8SE
    Mount:
    Celestron NexStar SE Computerized Alt-Az Mount
    Imaging Camera:

    Barlow:
    Astromania - 2" ED 2X Dual Power Telescope Barlow Lens
    Filter:
    Astronomik ProPlanet 642 BP IR-Pass Filter - 1.25"
    Capture Software:

      I had to comment.That last "fuck!" made me laugh out loud! So many are so serious about this hobby and being politically correct so to hear that just floored me.Thanks! That one "Fuck!" got you a new subscriber! Now, for the serious bit: I've been wondering about 2 inch barlows. Would you say such a barlow gives far better light grasp and quality than any of the 1.25 inch barlows out there?

    Nice, you made short work of setting up those spacers. work with the spacers. Being in a light polluted area, I've gotten a decent amount of experience and will continue to have the opportunity to image the moon. Started with a fork mounted C8 without clock-drive running and now use an SkyWatcher EQ-6R Pro.
    One thing I noticed about keeping the moon in frame is that good polar alignment always makes a huge difference. One I figured it out, I was so happy and amazed by the fact that I could keep a particular part of the moon or a one of the gas giants near the center of my FOV for a seemingly limitless span of time. More likely to encounter clouds before losing the target, if at all.

    Awesome shots of the moon chuck. I can’t get over how sharp and clear they are. Mine always seem a bit blurry and pull at ur eyes. It’s difficult to get high FPS shooting at full resolution. No matter the challenge u always pull off amazing shots. I spent 3 hrs last night fighting to get my mount to connect to my pc. It was awful and just when I was bout to give up presto things started working. Finally started capturing M13 around 1 am. It was my first night out in weeks and things just couldn’t be easy😡. If there isn’t clouds in the sky there’s always one over my head. Lol. Looking forward to ur next vid.

      , I was hoping for the best with this Barlow, and happy with how the images turned out. I know it's frustrating to spend 3 hours fixing an issue. Last week I lost 6 hours of clear skies while trying to get my focuser to work right. M13 is a good choice for when the moon is full.

    • @Sweatsox8
      @Sweatsox8 5 лет назад +1

      Chuck's Astrophotography . Thanks, I thought m13 was my best choice. As I was shooting in broadband with a full moon. It’s always something to give us problems, glad I’m not the only one. Lol. After trying 3 different cables, updating drivers, uninstalling Ascom, playing around in device manager and uninstalling usb drivers and reinstalling. With each step kept getting different error messages I’ve never seen before. Wasn’t sure if I was making progress or just getting more confused🤪. It all came down to a bum USB port. First world problems. Never connected my guide camera to my imaging camera before. So I did that freeing up my other usb3.0 and used that to connect to my HC and bingo everything worked. Thanks for letting me vent. Nice talking to someone who understands. My wife would have fell asleep by now. 😭

    You should try capturing ROI instead of full camera resolution, that way you will get some 20-30 FPS for capturing 1000+ frames and have better quality output. Bin 2x2 also significantly boost FPS but in CMOS camera like ZWO it only reduces the resolution by software binning not like CCD.

      , I was wondering about a 1.25" also. My guess is that there might have been some vignetting around the sides of the image with the 1.25" Barlow since the light would have gone down a narrower tunnel to reach the camera sensor.. Even though I'm using a 1.25" IR Pass filter, it's as close to the sensor as possible, so no vignetting was seen in my images. But it's all a guess since I never tried it.

If you want faster frames, reduce the capture area (you can keep the same pixel scale, but only use a part of the sensor) and make sure you are using USB3. The ASI183 has a lot of pixels it needs to push over that cable. If you see dropped frames, your laptop is not keeping up.

      Yes. it seems to have way more amp glow than the ASI1600MM. I'm not sure how that impacts deepsky imaging, but for solar system objects, it's a non-issue.

    Boy, I hope Chuck replies to these cuz I'd like an answer before tonights viewing lol, I'm curious ( maybe confused a bit?) . DO you need a Barlow lens? I ask because uptop where it says ZOOM your on auto.. if you pull that down you can zoom in 800% or more on it. that's what i do.. but I guess is a barlow a better way to do it? thanks . your videos ARE THE BEST. cuz there real !!!

    • @ChucksAstrophotography
      @ChucksAstrophotography  3 года назад

      For the conjunction. A Barlow will give you too much zoom, you will never fit the planets in the same frame.

      @@ChucksAstrophotography no Barlow was for moon .. but using zoom in sharpcap gives more than barlow .. was curious, why you don't use zoom feature in sharpcap.
      I wouldn't try to do both at once. Only one would be clear. Other fuzzy unless i do then separately . I may do Saturn . Just curious on barlow.. didn't know you needed them with a camera ? I'm a noobie noob to astrophotography... sorry if its a dumb question

    • @ChucksAstrophotography

      @@compubyte2010 Zooming in within SharpCap is just zooming in on your camera's resolution. It has nothing to do with actually getting closer to the moon. If you really want to get closer, a Barlow is still needed.

      @@ChucksAstrophotography - You're welcome, haha. I left an 8" newt behind me at the end of my last relationship. Never replaced it with anything because the area I live in now just really isn't good astronomy material and I wouldn't be happy unless I had a big-ish scope again. I gotta say, though... Those days were pure magic, the best astronomy days of my life. Watching your vid takes me back there to first light on that scope, staring in awe at crevices and mountain shadows on the moon, Cassini's division in Saturn's rings, Jupiter's red spot, and so many little kills on DSOs. I really miss it and every so often I almost lose it and go 'scope shopping, lol.
      Question for you if I may... What's the absolute fastest refresh rate on that live view? I'm considering getting one of those imagers for a live all-sky camera, and for the occasional microbiology work. If those things can do live view fast framerate work like say as an input device on OBS Studio or such, that might just get me to get one.

    • @NightRunner417
      @NightRunner417 5 лет назад +1

      Here's an interesting bit of info that came out of the preliminary chase for these makes of cameras for all-sky use. Note in the pictures; this is using an RPi of all things. That's some pretty impressive out-of-the-box usage right there. Using USB cams on RPi micros is painfully clumsy and slow, but if you can do this, then surely you can easily do whatever capture program you want on a strong PC for impressive framerates. An interesting way to go would be to use an Ethernet USB extender to go from the camera setup to the computer, which would easily get you 50+ feet of distance. I have an IO-Gear extender that claims 164' of total cable run, though I've never tested it that far. Fun stuff. Hardest part is weatherproofing and finding a good spot to mount, but it's all very doable on a reasonable budget.
