Man, you gotta to be so precise at every single step! I don't think I could manage it. The slightest mistake will eventually compound and throw the whole thing off. And you wouldn't even know it until you are finished.
Generally, there are a lot of chances to double check your work before you are finished. While you do need to pay attention, it is just one-step-at-a-time until it's done.
I always so enjoy watching your videos. In nearly 50 years of avid kayaking, this is quite probably the most elegant kayak I have ever seen. Your craftsmanship, attention to details, and exquisite rigging, is among the very best on our planet!
Sharp tools are the key to easy and enjoyable woodworking. Learning to sharpen your tools is a great investment in time and will make everything after that better.
Hey Nick, I can’t see it in any of the other comments so I just had to congratulate you on, besides your obvious craftsmanship, how it particularly tickled me how you took the time to edit the video and soundtrack to it so that the staples fired and the tape ripped to the beat of the lovely music you added - Nice touch. Lovely stuff 😉🙌
What a beauty.......what a beauty...........good on you.......Anything else I would say, just wouldn't be enough to describe all my thoughts.........may Good bless you
I love watching this creative endeavor. I have experimented with cutting strips, routing the cove and bead and building small test glue ups. I am still intimidated by the sheer length of time required and the risk of making some catastrophic error that would ruin all that work! I guess if you are not ready to climb mount everest then don't climb mount everest. I will get there eventually! still trying to find long lengths of cedar to avoid having to join smaller lengths. Perhaps you address that in one or more of your vids!
The way to climb Mt Everest is to start at sea level and take a step up the beach, then take another step. The odds of catastrophic failure are minimal. The chances of making a mistake that requires you to think and do some problem solving are high. It is actually this kind of mistake that makes the project fun and worthwhile because that is where you really start to learn.
Thank you for creating this beautiful and informative video. Can you tell us about the plane you're using and it's purpose at 4:06 minutes in the video ?
That is a Stanley #79 Side Rabbet Plane. I am adjusting the bevel of the strips at the chine to make a tight joint where the Cover & Bead strip won't make the turn.
Where can I get info on the tool you were using at 22:17 (long board?)? I could use that on my current (and first) kayak build, especially with the vacuum attached.
Beautiful work, Nick. Did you use 2 layers of 4 oz glass on the outside hull and deck and one layer inside? I'm thinking that's a better move than a single layer of 6 oz.
I really wanted to see how you cut the deck off the hull and how you took the form out but that got skipped over. Do you have any other video of that process ?
@@jonlaughton7689 Correct. While all the other strips are glued together, I just don't glue between the first strip on the deck and the first on the hull. So, once the staples are pulled the deck or hull can just be lifted off. Amazing boring isn't it?
I believe you just need to go to his website, which is listed in the bottom right throughout the video. I'm not sure if you would need a VPN with current world affairs though.
Stiil 110+ degrees here in AZ, too hot to be in the garage working on the boat build so I will binge watch this series. Thanks for sharing.
Great job with the staple gun percussion!
I'm still wondering how much influence ocd had in that lmao
Nick is an artist of highest level with so much sense for aesthetics, functionality, and beauty. He contributes to the beauty on our planet earth.
Oh my goodness... what a gorgeous boat!
Noticed your foster parent shirt. Thanks for stepping up! I hope it was rewarding for you!
Nick, I always wondered how you solved some of the building problems. That was fun to watch.

This is really a work of art!
Crazy amount of work. Beautiful
Simply beautiful
Thank you
I'm in awe of how sharp the hand plane is!

Very beautiful !!!!!!!
Thank you so much
Excellent video, congratulations
Loved the silent video!
I’ve always wanted to build one of these. I used to own your book and I don’t even kayak :) they just look so lovely and fun to build.
I dream to own one...I am a kayaker...I will take it over....😂😂😂
Amazing skill and craftsmanship!
Holy cow... that is gorgeous! Thank you very much, very inspiring.

Gr8 craftsmanship!!!

Possibly the most comely looking craft ever invented.
Looks great 👍
Nice timing with the music!

@@NickSchade Thank you for the thoughtful reply and encouragement. I will get there!

Nice work. Paddles one piece paddle or two separate oars? Outboard mount maybe(counterweighted)?
Perish the thought! If you want an outboard, get an old aluminum rowboat.
Our drummer just bought a staple gun to replace his snare!
As any good drummer should
Can someone also buy a finished, complete kayak from you and have it shipped also internationally?

Beautiful Boat

Do you have a list of the hand planes
hello nick, a question how do you do so i don't know i don't have the staple holes, thanks
I discuss building without staples on my microBootlegger Build. That starts with this video: ruclips.net/video/XX3MLuZgW6I/видео.html
I really wanted to see how you cut the deck off the hull and how you took the form out but that got skipped over. Do you have any other video of that process ?
It is really so anticlimactic that you will wonder why you wanted to see it: ruclips.net/video/6UxNdg2knwA/видео.html
You’re right Nick. I thought the deck would need to be cut to remove it but I take it that was never actually glued to the hull ?
@@jonlaughton7689 Correct. While all the other strips are glued together, I just don't glue between the first strip on the deck and the first on the hull. So, once the staples are pulled the deck or hull can just be lifted off.

@@NickSchade not to a beginner
how long on average does it take to build?
Hallo Nick, beautiful work! I have wooden K1 kayak from 70'. How would you recommend to store the kayak?... it's too long for my garage!
Perhaps two sawhorses and a tarp? The best solution would be climate controlled storage
Спасибо.
Bravissimo!!!
Perhaps I missed this in the other comments, but how long did this take, start to finish (months, weeks, year?)
Beautifull
Nick. I'm trying to contact you about a order. Please answer me. Thks!
Price?
João Ramos (Petrel Play SG sending to Brazil)

Çok güzel oldu tebrikler ...elinize sağlık

Let's play some music, I got my stapler haha nice touch
Hello! Great job!! I would like to purchase drawings of this boat in electronic form for cutting on a CNC machine.. How do I do this? I'm from Russia

Hola soy de la patagonia en el pais chile.. sudamerica Me interesa montar un astillero de kayak con maderas nativas.
Les interesa una franchise?
Exellend. :-)
Me encanto!! Hablas español?
Ich denke er nicht.
The strips should be leather
Great video again, but again your music has absolutely shocking......
I don't know if "shocking" is a good thing, but I'm glad you liked the video.

Waste?
Hey Nick,
What mask are you wearing?
I cannot find anything here in Spain that fits my face with my glasses on...
Love his Plans and his work but he’s still a cedar Piercer. Lol
Cedar piercer?
