    I was held back in gtx for two weeks in 24/98 cuz I didnt know about the 5 min dead man float face down. My recruiter told me I could do it on my back. Seems, according to your video, that that requirement has changed. I eventually classed up with what became Honor class 25/98 and took me 9 weeks to finally pass the entire test. Took me 15 weeks to get commissioned. 💯💪

    Thank you for information on the 5 minute swim. I've seen more people do front ward floating and less on your back and wasn't positive it could be done

    I remember the tower back in Class 42, May 1959: There was a regular navy PO 2 or 1 who couldn't jump from the tower. Eventually the instructor climbed up behind him and pushed him off. One of the funny times at Newport.
    My favorite was the Buttercup---which my group actually saved.

    I'm actually looking forward to this part, might even take a nap during the float. If you guys struggle with the float try to focus on your hips and head. tilt your head back to keep that heavy brain in the water and thrust your hips up to the surface to avoid your lower half sinking.

    Thanks for the videos, they’re super helpful! I have a question about the second swim qual you referenced at the beginning of the video. Do you know if that’s the one where you have to swim a mile in a flight suit? That’s the only aviation swim qual I was aware of and I’d love to be able to knock it out at OCS if possible. Any info you have would be helpful, thanks!!

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  2 года назад

      The first swim qual is the third class one, and that's what this video is about. But there's also a first class swim qual which is not the same thing as the one where you swim a mile in a flight suit. That one can only be done in flight school.

    Thank you for sharing all of this information! I would like to know more about your experience coming from Yale to the Navy. Did you know you were going to commission while at Yale? I'm coming from a similar institution, and when I tell my friends in academia my plan on commissioning, they're either really happy or really disappointed. How did you navigate that?

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад +5

      As long as you can explain your rationale for commissioning (i.e.; maybe you want firsthand experience working with DoD systems, you want a clearance, you want leadership experience, etc, because you aspire to work closely with the DoD after your tour), then most people usually get it. Ivy folks aren't usually expected to go military, but if you aspire to go into government, politics or another related field, it can look pretty good to have prior officer experience. Lots of presidential candidates, senators, and members of congress have some kind of military association.

    Great video, just like the previous ones. Question - are those swim evolutions scored in any way or is it just a pass/fail kinda thing? Also, regarding the actual swim (second part of the second part), is it just the length of the L-shaped pool once, or is it a longer distance swim?

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад +1

      Happy to help! The whole thing is just pass/fail. For the second part of the second part (where you swim with the inflated coveralls), it's a substantially shorter swim.

    So when you jump in I’m assuming you must take your trousers off and tie knots in the legs otherwise nothing will trap air. So do you need to keep afloat by only using your legs doing some egg beater kicks? If so, I’ll def practice that because I’ve always struggled. Thanks :)

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  Год назад

      You will not have to remove your pt gear. The part that involves the removal of clothing is when you're wearing coveralls during the part where you do trap the air. Yes, you will kick your legs as you slap the water or blow into them to trap air in your coveralls.

    Hi, I'm headed to ODS soon. A tab bit different from OCS but do you think the same option is given for the 5 min float?

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад +1

      The swim qualification will be the same.
      It is much more than a tad bit different. ODS is far far easier than OCS-- they're already commissioned officers when they arrive. We saw what ODS students went through, and would laugh at how traumatized they were after going to the sand pit for only 30 minutes 2 or 3 times in their indoc phase. You'll do just fine.

  • @blueskies8830
    @blueskies8830 3 года назад +1

    Will they drop you from OCS if you continue to fail swim qualification? Or is it as long as you never give up, you can’t get dropped? I can’t swim btw, but I’m currently trying to learn on my own. I’m trying to get swimming lessons, but covid is preventing me from enrolling.

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад +2

      It's up to ocs leadership. The swim qual is a navy-wide requirement, so you can't commission without it. In theory, you could end up rolling. If you can't take official swim lessons, but still have access to water shallow enough to stand up in, I would get in (again, make sure you can stand up in it with your head out of the water), and start practicing some of the swim options and 5 minute float on your own. You can google the different authorized swim strokes. If you don't have access to water to practice in, then just remember that some days, instead of PT, you'll just go to the pool. That means you'll have over 10 weeks of free swim lessons, plus, get out of morning PT a few times.

  • @justforme3821
    @justforme3821 3 года назад

    Can you go over the last part of the swim Qual? With the overalls? How does someone stay afloat while trying to fill the overalls with your air?

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад

      You "slap" the air into the coveralls while also kicking your legs to stay afloat. The coveralls fill with air pretty quickly.

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад +1

      Hello! Happy to help :)
      In the Navy, for officers, you choose a specific designator ("job") and then apply only to that one (unless you want to apply to multiple). You do not go to OCS until you've been selected for a designator, and you accept that designator. Your application gets sent to a board for that community, and then they select you for the job (or not). Now, you can apply to multiple designators, but hopefully they're all at least in the same community (i.e.; you apply for NFO and SNA--both in aviation, or to CW and INTEL--both in IWC), because each community board meets at different times. Your options are limited by whatever requirements there are for the designator(s) you're (potentially) interested in. For example, to go to flight school, regardless of NFO vs SNA, you have certain height requirements, as well as a minimum/competitive score on the OAR, and specific requirements regarding what degree type they expect out of an aviator. Same for other communities. Note that if you apply for and you're accepted to multiple designators, you will have to make a choice within a few days. OCS has new classes every 3 weeks, but with the pan de mic, classes are smaller, and folks have to quarantine for 2 weeks prior to attendance. Hopefully by 2021, this won't be the case anymore. But you'll have to choose, and then you'll have to wait to class up.
      You can check the navy website for general requirements (such as what the GPA threshold is, and what sort of degree you need for the designator you're applying to), but then you'll want to do some googling of things like, "naval flight officer minimum OAR score" or "information professional minimum GPA".

    I was checking on PT test-related issues and wanted to ask about push ups. I've read that you cannot sag your back or be in any rest position other than the front leaning and going to any other position ends the test. Is this true?

    • @Mollyloveblue
      @Mollyloveblue  3 года назад +2

      Not only can you not have your booty ("2 pack") sag, but at OCS, you also may not rest in the forward-leaning sort of downwars dog position. Too much sagging or lifting of your 2 pack will end the test.
