    I joined Jazz Skills because of content like this video. It’s the definition of demystifying what looked like a conundrum. but my absolute favourite part of the video is when you say “I wished I’d said” and then play the movements that had just come to you. That split second shows the power of your method, can’t say how much I’m getting out of the clarity of your teaching.

    Alto Sax. Learned my 12 major scales, 3 half step diminished, 2 whole tones, both ways round the cycle, and shoehorn major third arpeggios in where ever possible (sometimes where it's not), a handful of patterns, and let my mind do the rest. If I want to sound like a dork, I'll play the blues scale. Love your lessons.

    That was great. One thing your videos have done for me is to make me think of chords in groups instead of static slices of time. You can’t really consider the character of a chord without knowing what came before and comes after.

    Just came across this channel. Wow, I am loving what I am seeing/hearing. As a guitarist I have been intrigued with the Barry Harris method. I'm always wanting to demystify changes. At the 7:15 mark it seems you also have the vanilla changes, or possibly the original changes. Is there a place to find that rather than The Real Book?

      My “main” instrument is the Sax, but I’ve always plonked on a piano for fun, but taking Shan’s course to get some piano chops has given me some musician chops that means I am a better sax player. I think it’s a great journey, I’m sure I’ll never be a great piano player but, what I’m learning is opening my mind to playing sax and piano that I’ve only dreamed of.

    At 9:20 or so, talking about how, with extensions, you can just subtract 7, I would have thought there is a little more information in the 13th or 9th notation than is expressed by using 6th or 2nd, and that is that the chord is, in fact, a seventh. That is not so if you just write C6 or Eb2, and seventh chords are quite a different thing from triads.

    Horn players would say Keep It Simple. We don't want fancy chords if it stops you from swinging. When you're backing, the job is to make the Soloist sound good.
    Get out from under our feet & let us do our thing. Play what you want in your solo.
