In the exact same boat as you with final fantasy, haven’t really been into it in the past and the demo for FFXVI sold me HARD. Bought the deluxe edition mid-demo, can’t wait for it to come out!

The reality is that a good bit of Souls aspects is either from armored Core originally, or is simply just how Fromsoft does their games. Obviously Fromsoft is gonna put what they've learned over the last decade towards a new Armored Core, but for so much of the conversation online to be "It's like dark souls because there's telegraphed attacks and a lock on" is annoying.

This situation of Armored Core, reminds me of when Mhw was announced, there are part of the community that blame Capcom making Monster Hunter too casual.
For example, not having to throw paintball at the monster every 10-15 minutes to keep track of it on the map. (why removing this upsets them is beyond me) Even though most of the changes, are really cool and make it more fluid. People do hate changes. It can be scary.. I get it, but let's not judge stuff too quickly

I think I’m right there with you about being excited for ff16. I had a really good time with 15 even though it lost its way a few times and is a narrative mess. The moment to moment gameplay was cool. I’m stoked to basically be in kaiju battles with summons. Haven’t played the demo yet but hope to before the game drops! Great show thanks hope vacation is treating you well!!

Haha as someone who played Armored Core since the PSX days - yeah, the controls were pretty bad all the way up until 4. Even 4 and 5 were quite clunky at times, but this seemed to be the general direction they were moving in with what we saw in the gameplay demo of VI.
As for FFXVI - not really for me. Also I don't know, maybe it was just me, but it feels like the character is running with skates on. It just felt really off.

I've only played AC1 after AC6's been announced, but I think even from that I can see from where AC fans are coming with their "caution" regarding Souls influence.
I feel what I liked from AC1 is how clunky and imprecise the combat is, and it is expected because you are piloting a giant mess of steel. Even more agile builds feel way more like a tank than an Eva. And Souls combat is intentionally precise, and when you mess up this precision works as a punishment for you.
I'd put it this way - in souls you are either performing at 100% or 0%, in AC - you always float somewhere between 30% and 70%, and it's unbelievably satisfying to master another part of your mech and climb internally from 40% to 45%, this progress feels as slow and as imprecise as your mech itself.
And the gameplay footage everyone got showed basically an agile build and a very agile build, nothing really slow and tanky. Combat with bosses also feels way closer to this "100% or 0%" model.
All that doesn't mean it's going to be a bad videogame, or even a bad part of a series, I honestly think it's going to be great and I specifically am going to love it. But I hope that this charm of imprecision is still in the game, just because I think it was a valuable part of AC1 for me.

I understand why people are testy about AC6. No one thought there would be another AC, and when the news hit that there would be, people's minds went wild. I would totally dig a modern game that takes more after AC3 and the other old gens because they have really unique elements, not all of which are making their way into AC6. HOWEVER, there are 15+ armored core games already out there.
Fromsoft had already refined the AC1 formula every which way over ten games with so many combined missions, and parts that you could play these games for years, all on the PS1 and PS2. For AC4, they took the series in a new direction, and many old fans were upset, and again for AC5, to really extreme extent. Each time, they left behind mechanics that the players viewed as vital to the identity of AC, and added new ones.
AC6 is a contender for the biggest difference yet, but it doesn't mean the death of Armored Core as some diehard fans are making out. Go watch the CG trailers for every AC game and see how similar they look to AC6; it's obvious fromsoft is doing this out of love for the franchise, because they're certainly not financially obligated to make a goddamn AC game.

I dont care about the estus flask or the Bonfirey checkpoints the wellsprings
Its the hard lockon that hurts me
Its like CSGO2 Having a built in aimbot (CSGO players wont be happy about it)
You see Souls games are big on Bossfights.
But in AC games its about the AC vs AC gameplay (Story and pvp) I feel like a hard lock-on will take the magic out of these fights

the pain of AC6 isn't going to be that it's a bad game, it will be that it could have been so much better, but it just barely fell short of perfection

I loved the AC games since I was a kid, and I think that there is a difference between pandering to casuals and having quality of life changes. Take sekiro for example, it's easier to parry, you have a bunch of tools at your disposal, it should be the easiest fromsoft game, right? Wrong. Sekiro is considered one of fromsofts hardest games still, and I think just because it will be easier to aim at enemies, from soft will always find a way to beat you to the ground. ( Plus vaatividya confirmed there will still be softlock, and the estuslike healing system is probably due to longer missions, and not pandering. And the ability to access garage mid mission is probably due to long missions as well.)

I don’t end up finishing many JRPG’s due to their length, but they’re still the genre of game I’m most drawn to. Hadn’t decided about whether to hop on the FFXVI hype train for months, but the last few weeks of press, and watching a stream of the demo has convinced me...
    I finally have a reason to buy a PS5 🥲💸
