9 of wands / lances shown at 8:24 is another female figure that is not picked up on in the book. Decoding this and other cards involves consideration of the Mithraem initiations as well as symbollism of Roman pantheon (and Greek counterparts). Ancient Roman symbollism is everywhere in this deck as well as latin references such as S.P.Q.R. (Senatus Populusque Romanus, 'the Senate and People of Rome') and TRAHOR FATIS ('I'm drawn by Fate'). Numbers have significance, such as the number 4 which is representative of Apollo (and related 'order') but can also be drawn to look like the astrological symbol for Taurus (the bull).
I have deleted the previous comment just because I want to give a more precise information. In 1907, the Italian family Sola Busca lent the _Tarocchi_ to the British Museum in London; there, Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith took from them the inspiration for their wonderful edition. Fortunately, in 2009 the Italian State bought the _Tarocchi_ from the owner of that time and gave them to the _Pinacoteca di Brera_ Museum, in Milano, where the _Tarocchi Sola Busca_ still are able to attract thousands of admirers. Many thanks for sharing.
The original deck is where it should be, in its born country, Italy, more precisely in Milano, Pinacoteca di Brera, not in London! On top of that, by an old legend and mith, Saturn was the founder of Italy, with its first city between Lazio and Toscana, named Saturnia. Hail my father Saturn🙏💖💖💖💖
Well, influenced by this video, I will have this deck tomorrow: the only problem will be how to read it. It seams that the "The Game of Saturn" does not offer a cartomancy. By the way, the back of those _Tarocchi_ duplicates accurately the original one. Best regards from Italy :)

I’m hoping the “2 Esoteric Tarot” book will fill me in enough that I don’t feel the need to get the “Game of Saturn”... I understand he had had some changes in his thoughts since then that are reflected in the new book. Thank you again. I see that you’ve passed this deck on now. Thanks for this walkthrough. I love how you discovered the linea nigra! It takes a woman. ;) I've had the Sola Busca on my wish list for forever (and The Game of Saturn), and the 'demonic' association has slowed me down, it's true, but I think I'm ready to explore and decide how to regard it. Looking at these backs, they look very close to Giordano Berti's version. They also look similar to the backs on my Tarocchi Visconti di Modrone by Il Meneghello, which IIRC is a reproduction of the museum deck and its back. I prefer them as they are. :)

Interesting association with the Sola Busca tarot and the planet Saturn as per the Game of Saturn book. Have my own separate theory about the Sola Busca system and my theory has little connection to Saturn and/or evil.😊
Yes, interesting indeed! As I now really begin to dive into and work with the actual deck, it will be interesting to see if I agree with the conjectures in the book or if I choose to consider them while working with the deck. I'd love to hear your theory! 🙏🏼

Hi Julianne. Glad you gave us this introduction. What I wonder and would love your opinion on concerns what you brought up about Saturn. To begin, could it's ending be related to Saturn being assigned to The World Card in GD and B.O.T.A. ? Secondly, we know that the planet is known as the malefic planet. Lord of Karma, Devil, Task Maker, Father Time etc. Even Carl Jung wrote about his belief that before Christianity, evil was not quite so evil. My point is that the Sola Busca Tarot and book point to Saturn as the end result. Therefore, is Saturn the Alchemical metal (representing) the essence used to transform us to Gold? This was fascinating to say the lease.
Oh Carol, you opened a juicy can of worms! 😊 Saturn's (the planet's) element is lead, which is what alchemists tried to turn into gold, and the Devil/Grim Reaper/Father Time/Chronos are all seen as an adversary or obstacle to man (specifically the ego mind), and by facing them or that which shows us the dark, we can then see the light (duality), and hence transform into gold/ascend/return to Source. In this view, like Jung pointed out, evil is just there to help us see the good. Evil is the lead that shows us the gold. Lucifer means "the light bearer" after all! All so fascinating indeed. I once was going to make a video about the Devil (in Tarot and religion) and Lucifer discussing this, but never did. Maybe it's time? Much Love to you! 💕
😃😍 I’m SO GEEKED about this new development! I haven’t managed to get my hands on a copy of that book yet, but I’ve listened to as many interviews of the author as I can find. He’s fascinating, and his journey in researching this deck is riveting to listen to. I’d love to hear an even more in-depth discussion about this book and deck! I’m so excited you’re researching it!!! 😄👏❤️🙏
Thanks Natalie! I could loan you the book. I should be able to send it by media mail (the weight would be too much for regular shipping). Oh, and though we are write-in-books gals, this is a no-writing-in-it book. Let me know. 💕😊
I got these three exactly in this order and don’t know what they mean someone gifted me this deck so I’m trying to learn and the three cards are cavaliere di Anfore Fante Di Anfore And Anfore what’s these three cards mean and in that order ? But it’s the reprint version in 2022
Roman version Mithraism was very much linked with Saturnalia and festivals to each coincided - during which colours red, purple, gold were worn and a bull sacrifice was made (Saturn was Father of Zeus/Jupiter but was beaten and exiled by him so the killing the bull would represent killing a son/ tyrranical god, effectively). Mithraism was the popular cult of Roman soldiers and hence we find temples (Mithraem) all over the former Roman empire (including one in London that you can visit and one at Hadrians wall). These temples had a pit where soldiers would be 'baptised' in the blood of the slain bull, and possibly even their human enemies. There were 7 levels of initiation and each level was overseen by a particular deity / planet - the top level (7) being Pater (Father) overseen by Saturn. During Saturnalia gambling was allowed (originally cards were part of gambling). Many of the cards of the Sola Busca have imagery that relates to the Mithraic initiation as well as indicating keen followers (Nero was a big fan of Saturnalia and Mithraism as well as a ruthless leader - even prepared to sacrifice his own family when necessary - just what the bull sacrifice represents - we see the same ideas in Abrahamic religion too, with God demanding Abraham kill his son to show loyalty). The similarity of the word for bull (tauro) and the names of tarrochi / tarot (as well as if one thinks of their names as pronounced in these European contexts) is striking. Quite likey in later centuries playing cards would have been used around Saturnalia / birth of Mithras (25th December!) for gambling games, hence called after the 'tauro'. The Sola Busca has very masculine / combatorial energy, some of which has been inherited into the Smith-Rider- Waite via the inspiration it gave to this deck, and subsequent decks used by the Smith-Rider--Waite. One has to be careful of how one works with and uses such energy, but ignoring it or pretending it isn't there is unlikely to be helpful.
It looks like they still have the paperback available (under Biblioteque Rougue). The first two hardback options are sold out though: scarletimprint.com/publications/the-game-of-saturn

@@the-999-asmr-tarot-art-show Great question! My impression of the cards was that they read very, very accurately, but there was an energy to them, possibly due to their origins and history, that felt a bit "icky." It looks like an interesting deck. While I am happy to see no christian imagery, I am not sure that Baal worship is greatly better. It seems like elites have often been enamoured of evil gods.

The one take away from these two podcasts, is that we don't know why this deck was created. I love the speculation and the connection to modern-day conspiracy theories. If conspiracy theories are not your thing, it does shed a light on one thing: That the Pagan elite was not dead in 1490. He even says in one of the podcasts that there is more to study, that he didn't review the complete deck in his book. The question remains, was this a ceremony deck or was it a divination deck, but one thing was certain the people that created it spared no expense at its creation, using copper plates, and a master artist to paint them. Thank you for sharing this!
