- As you might already know, the GoPro Karma Grip is a rugged little piece of gear that ANY GoPro user and enthusiast must look into having.
This ENTIRE video was filmed on a GoPro Hero 7, hence the sub-par audio. No clips have been color corrected, everything captures is directly out of the camera.

Only this year have I been using the Karma Grip. I bought the GoPro HERO 7 Black when it hit the market in 2018 because of the Hypersmooth image stabilization. So I didn't need a gimbal. But when I started filming the interiors of abandoned places with little or no light, I saw how the Hypersmoth digital stabilization fails and fails in a big way. Making many of the videos useless to use. That's when I remembered that a gimbal didn't need digital stabilization. In 2019 I acquired in second hand the Karma Grip but at the time I found it big, heavy and awkward. I used it little or nothing. This year I decided to try Karma Grip again with the GoPro HERO 7 Black by studying the subject better and watching some explanatory videos and boom. I started using and enjoying it more and more. I have already filmed several locations in low light using a small LED panel and I no longer have the problem of stabilizing the digital image. There is some grain in the image due to the GoPro sensor being small but I can capture acceptable videos in low light. I will continue to use the Karma Grip with the GoPro HERO 7 Black in the coming months and possibly next year until it is really justified to switch to another camera of the genre with better quality. Even GoPro 9 does not seem to me to be an exchange for Karma Grip with GoPro HERO 7 in low light.
Unfortunately, i see most action cameras preforming less than exceptional in all low light situations.. i think once companies start playing with a little bit bigger of a chassis, then we can play with a bigger sensor, then we will see better low light... until the tiny camera revolution changes, i think we are stuck.

I've had the same setup since it came out. The stabilization is so much better than hypersmooth. I did buy the GoPro Hero 9 Black. I'll compare the 2 and see if the stabilization is smoother than the gimbal. Doubtful but I'm curious!
I like how rugged it is.. i don't have any second thoughts about throwing the whole setup loose in a book bag and letting it get beat around. I am kinda excited to hopefully get a Hero 9 soon tho. 🤙

Great video! I wish there was more details on battery use, angle movements and any other quirks. at $99 price...I am getting one!
I wish i could give you a definitive time for battery life, truth is, i've never had an issure or even notices a significant drain using the gimbal. It lasts quite a long time, no issues.
If you could elaborate on what you want to know regarding "angle movements" i'll do my best to answer here in the comments.

do you have a problem where the gimbal wont center. for example, i attached it to chest mount while riding motorcycle. after turning left or right, it wont back to center position. i have to press the bottom button. is it a common problem. is there any way to fix this? thanks
I have the grip and I use it all the time with my Hero6. I really like it. The only time I use another handle is if I am in the pool. I will probably end up purchasing the extension cable since the price has been lowered.

Karma grip is $99 now. I put it in the cart and when I pressed checkout button the total is $130. How come the taxes are 30% on their website ?

If you have a newer GoPro (7 or 8) you might be able to get away with just a check mount... they both have exceptional stabilization. Older than that, yes.. this would be your best option, IMHO.

Great review especially given the timeframe this unit came out. I was looking for a review as I was considering getting one of these. Looks like the price has come down to $99 since March. Looks like they're going to stop making this unit based on huge price reduction. What other Gimbals have you used with a GoPro camera??
I also own the Zhiyun Smooth Q mobile gimbal,.. in order to use a go pro with you, you have to buy a balancing plate, but truthfully, i wouldn't recommend going that route. The Karma grip is durable, tuff, and beyond simple. I sincerely love it, highly recommended... and for $100, you can't beat it.
Great video. Thanks for the info! I do have one question. Could I use the karma grip and the smart remote for the same camera? I plan on having 3 GoPro Hero 7 Blacks recording at the same time. I was going to use the smart remote to start and stop all of them at the same time. However, I would also like to use the gimbal for extra stabilization on my action camera. I just sent to make sure this plan will work. Thanks.
Hmmmm, that I am not sure.... I honestly don't know if the smart remotes run on a single frequency, or bluetooth paired with the device.. i assume the latter. You might want to reach out to GoPro on Twitter with the question, hopefully they will be able to verify. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I have one and is the grindy sound normal?
I've never noticed any sort of grindy sound. there's a little motor noise but almost unnoticeable... maybe check to see if you have and sand or dirt visible in the movable mechanisms to clean out.. if not, you may have a defective unit?... GoPro has a great customer service department, they should be able to help. Keep me in the loop. 🤙

What are your thoughts still? Have you owned the DJI Osmo mobile? How does it compare?
It's still one of the easiest gimbals I have ever used. I also have an Zhiyun Smooth Q, and I would pick the GoPro Grip over a mobile gimbal ever time.

Yes. I never did a side-by-side comparison w/ the gimbal vs (just) the GoPro7, but it does work & that is what is showcased in this video.

Thinking I’ll pick one up today and use for my walking around camp shots and when my buddy is doing really technical slow riding stuff he always teases me about being a “shaky” camera man lol 😂

The gimbal allows for more fluid movement, while hypersmooth is just stabilization.
Most definitely turn off hyper smooth while using the gimbal. The gimbal still beats the hero 9 hyperboost 2.

@@utah62 it counter acts with the gimbal. Plus hypersmooth crops the video a little. The gimbal allows you to keep full video.

Hi Tom and thank you for the videos. I just want to know how to pair or work my Grip and my GP 7 because it doesn' t respon the commands from the grip. The GP 7 just turn on and nothing else. thank you again and hope to recieve your support.
Hey Eivar,
If your GoPro 7 is completely up -to-date, i suggest doing a reset on the unit.
Hold the mode/power button for 8-10 seconds.
If done properly, all of the LEDs on the grip will blink once and power off the grip.
Then all four LED lights will flash with a single red bottom light.
Continue holding and the Karma Grip and camera will power back on.
(It's very important that you CONTINUE to hold down the power button until the Karma Grip has completely powered back on.)

I noticed your audio while recording with the Karma grip was good. I was lucky to pick up one through Gopro for $99 a couple of days ago and my audio seems horrible. Do I need to do something, like an adjustment or something? Thanks

Sorry for delay, highest resolution is 4K 15 FPS. I think it does well. Currently using it on our vacation...

After traveling with mine in the case for almost two years, using it only here and there, I lost button functionality on several of the buttons on the Karma. Big shame. Kinda considering seeing if I can trade it for some store credit somewhere somehow. It's not as rugged as I hoped. But I mean its a delicate machine so I am not shocked.
I seriously beat the crap out of mine,... i'm surprised. 😳
But, for $99, it's pretty cheap to replace. 👍

I'm about to buy my first GoPro and I can't decide whether to buy the Hero 7 and karma grip or just go Hero 8. Any advice? Great video btw!

@@TomDeCicco I'm a flight paramedic and I'd like to put together training videos. I borrowed a friend's Hero 7 with the chest strap and it was awesome, however I'm unsure whether to invest in the 8 or just go for the 7
Anonymous I haven’t had a hands on w/ the GoPro 8, and I do t know much about the hypersmooth 2.0... but the GoPro 7 is exceptional. I don’t think you’d need a gimbal regardless. 👍🏻

That's correct.
You can use the 5, 6, &7. The 8 will not work.
Would this work with a gopro 9?
Unfortunately not. They changes the chassis of the camera with the 8 and 9.
