  • Richie Benaud’s contribution to cricket is unique. As Australian captain he was shrewd, ruthless and successful, as a player his combined skills as legendary leg spinner, capable batsman and fearless close fielder made him a formidable opponent. His switch to commentary box has proved equally successful and now, after 25 years of Test Match commentary with the BBC, he presents his anthology of outstanding performances on the field.
England v New Zealand. Trent Bridge, 1973. New Zealand’s attempt to beat England gave them the then highest ever fourth innings total by a losing team. After having collapsed for 97 all out in their first innings, and Tong Grieg (139) and Dennis Amiss (138*) scoring heavily in England's second innings, New Zealand were set a target of 479 runs to win the match and record their first test victory against England, home or away. They fell 39 runs short, with captain Bevan Congdon top scoring with 176, Victor Pollard scoring 116 and wicket keeper Ken Wadsworth scoring 46.
England v Pakistan. Lord’s, 1982. Mohsin Khan’s incredible exhibition of batsmanship.
England v Australia. Old Trafford, 1961. Benaud’s own finest hour, routing an English side who were coasting to an Ashes victory.
England v West Indies. Headingley, 1969. More memorable spin bowling from “Deadly” Derek Underwood to rip through a West Indies side smelling victory.
England v India. The Oval, 1971. England undone by the spin wizardry of Chandrasekhar.
England v Australia. Headingley, 1981. Botham’s famous visit to the crease - one of the most memorable innings of all time.
England v West Indies. Lord’s, 1984. Fitting tribute to the Lord’s centenary of Test Cricket - a game of genius from Botham, 8-103, and Greenidge “the Hammer” who blasted for home.
Benson and Hedges Cup. Northamptonshire v Yorkshire. Lord’s, 1987. A nerve-jangling match gave Yorkshire their first cup final win in 18 years.

A hard competitor, a skilled competitor, a determined competitor, a man who knew how to behave - the very definition of civilised. Generous in passing on his knowledge and his experience, and In later life immaculately dressed, erudite, articulate and knowledgeable - we won't see the like of Richie again. How he was not knighted, I'll never understand

You have to admit anyone that coming through 80's, 90's early 2000's summer was made better because cricket was on and Richie was commentating.

thank you bro for the upload of this lovely video. Would love to have more of such epic battles. a combo of some of the all time greatest come back win in a test match and series victories by all teams from bygone days or the 70s to late 90s when TV coverage was still in its infancy stage.

The art of TV commmentary is knowing when not to speak. It is the pictures that tell the story that your words then add to or - if you get the moment wrong - detract from. Richie Benaud was the greatest cricket commentator of his generation because he understood this perfectly. His words were well chosen and, always, his. No cliches or banalities passed his lips. What he said was the result of wry observation and a deep knowledge of the game.
