  • Put these 14 vegetables in now for your fall garden to harvest well into fall and winter. This list works ideal for gardening zones 5 through 7 (with a first hard frost date in mid-September to first of October). If you're in zone 8 just push the planting a little bit later (6 to 8 weeks before your first hard frost date).
For more information, visit the blog post here: melissaknorris...
If you're in zone 5 or colder you may be able to put in the seed list as starts.
I share which crops we harvest almost year round and which will need a little bit of cold weather protection.
Crops I plant from starts in August for Fall and Winter harvest:
    1. Broccoli
    2. Brussel Sprouts
    3. Cauliflower
    4. Cabbage
    5. Kale
Crops I plant from seed in August for Fall and Winter harvest:
    1. Beets
    2. Spinach
    3. Swiss Chard
    4. Snow or sugar snap peas
    5. Carrots
    6. Turnips
    7. Parsnips
    8. Lettuce (when hard frosts hit will grow all winter with some frost protection)
    9. Chinese Spinach (aka Amaranth)

All year round I can harvest Parsley, Kale, Cabbage, Catsear, Chard, potatoes, garlic, onions. also lots of herbs like rosemary, mint, thyme, etc... As far as "almost", some years we may get one or so days when the temperature outdoors remains below freezing all day long. on those days we can't harvest unless we want to kill or risk killing the plant. So I can't quite boot "almost", -- but almost!
Also: In my first year growing lots of food, we harvested the last of the squash, peppers, and tomatoes in December! This year peppers & tomatoes & others have started late but squash & cucumbers are coming on no problem.
I wonder, is there something besides greens/herbs for late winter-early spring?

This will be the first year that i'm able to plant a fall garden. My goal for the last four years was to garden through the winter inside my 18 x 30 hoop house. I had a series of set backs preventing me for doing so from pet dogs, rabbits, chipmunks I didn't even know I had and hurricane winds that blew the plastic off . Everything looks like a Go for this year . Wish me luck I'll need it . I love your show and wished I found you sooner.

I found a great way to start peas. Wet and wring out a paper towel and put it in a zip lock bag. Place the seeds on the towel and zip shut. Place in a warm dark place. I put mine under a towel on my patio. A few days later, open bag and take out your sprouts and put them in the ground. It gets them started faster, I think, than just putting the plain seed in the ground.
I recently planted peas and carrots. I’m planning on growing some lettuce and radishes as well this fall. Thanks for the tip to wait on the radishes!

I have 9 raised Container beds in front, 6 large ones on my back deck and 4 in the back yard. Whew! A lot of work just getting water to them when we don't get rain. We grew Spaghetti Squash vertically in one of them and got an amazing harvest. We grew yellow Squash and Zucchini. 4 or 5 different types of Beans, Kale, Spinach, Bell Peppers, Collards and Mustard Greens, Okra, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, several types of Herbs and a truly sweet, tender harvest of Carrots. Probably the best tasting Carrots I've ever had. Planted a new batch just yesterday. Gonna go out and plant some Beets later. And then try my hand at some Lettuce. I had to go out and buy another Freezer cause we ran out of freezer space even though we already had 3!!! Hopefully we don't have an issue with any of them. Luckily I also have 2 Generators if we have a power outage. Great info in your video!

Absolutely love this Video~ Thank you!! I will be signing up for the October 2nd workshop. I have such a small yard with our home and neighborhood in Gig Harbor Wa and have ( 5 ) 4ftx4ft planter boxes that I squeezed into our yard and have been learning how to garden for the first time in these last 4 years. My dream ( after my nursing career and raising 4 children) is for us retire in 3 years on about .5-1 acre with a small home somewhere and have a year round garden :) . This year's Summer tiny crop I planted lettuce, 3 bush bean plants ( which are about done now and I harvested about 2 lbs) , a row of beets, carrots ( that did't do well ~ I don't really know how to plant carrots well ), snow peas, chard and tomato plants in one box that are not ripe yet. So, I was able to harvest most of these however it did not produce throughout this season~ and I am still trying to work out plans to be able to have a full Summer harvest with my Tiny Garden. I also have a 4 y/o 5 grafted apple tree that has so many apples this year~ I think they will not be ready to pick until September? Last year I harvested 22.5 lbs~ and this year looks like so many more :). Thank you again Melissa~ I appreciate your teachings so much and any suggestions you may have. Patty from the Pacific NW

Near "Mayberry," NC, first frost is about 10/21. The biggest issue is that it is so hot now (July/August) that there is a problem with germination with cool weather crops. Turnips can be an over winter crop where you can leave them in the ground for cattle, deer, and people.

You can put hoops over your garden area for a high tunnels season extender. If you do that and you get summer hail storms, throw blankets or tarps over the hoops and pin down to protect your crops.
When I was growing up in GA. my grandparents would run out and throw sheets and blankets over everything and use 2x4's and bricks (kept along the edges of the garden area for this) to hold them down. You get some damage, but not have the garden destroyed.

I live in an over-55 community in the Pac NW. We have community plots 4x12 feet (up to 2 per person) where people grow a variety of flowers and veg., but I have seen very few people plant more than one crop. (Tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce and onions mostly.) In fact they are rather surprised to see me putting new plants for a fall garden. A few people keep harvesting kale and chard through the winter. I am going to see if I can talk some people into letting me put stuff in their plots if they are not going to use them after they harvest their summer crops. A mini-hoop house in my little plot extends the season nicely for lettuce and such. I have starts going but I have never done brussels sprouts because I though they would take up too much space, but I am rethinking that.

Have you ever tried the rain gutter method? You fill up your used or discarded rain gutters with good soil and sow your seeds at the appropriate distance then when it's ready to plant then just dig your trench and slide everything right into the trench for the final planting. That way you don't have to bother the roots. If you have seeds that don't come up just remove the soil where they didnt come up and slide the dirt out of the gutter right into the trench .🤗

@@MelissaKNorris That is going to be my project next week =) And it is a really hard question for me I think... when I was really small we had a lot of fruit trees in our garden and most of them were about 50 years old so they died out slowly and by now my parents didn't replace them, because handling all the food was to much work for them. I saw pictures of the of the times when my mum was small and their whole garden (1300sqm I think its about 0,35 acre, it's really big where I'm coming from) was a vegtable garden with everything they could grow and they had chickens an bunniesand that was the biggest part of what they were eating, her parents and grandparents were the generation that went throu WW2 and the years following (it is kind of compares with the great depression in the US only later). Back to my parents who are planning to leave for the enjoyment of retirement in 2 years with travaling and living their best lives. They decided that I and my husband to be inherit their house and garden "early" so they are done with it. And I was really afraid of the work because I kind of hate lawn mawing and the garding for pretty appearance, but I always loved it when I was allowed to pick cherries and strawberries as a child, and thats kind of the biggest take away for me from your podcast that it yes it is work but not as much, specially when I get something out of it like food that I've grown myself. Right now we have a herb garden and some cherry tomates on our balcony we "practice" with and we are putting an apple tree, a cherry tree and a plum tree in our future garden this year. It just doesn't seem so impossible and weird when I want a lot of fruits and vegtables in my garden when other people my age think about how big their pool or deck should be.

    • @MelissaKNorris
      @MelissaKNorris  5 лет назад +2

@Deb Tiner they do fine in container crops. Just make sure the containers are deep enough for root crops. Containers are more apt to freeze due to being above ground so the lettuce might not last as long, but they're easier to wrap in frost protection .

I just saw this video pop up on RUclips. I started my first vegetable garden (and flowers) this year and everything is coming along fine. I started everything from seed except my strawberries, blueberries and grapes. I have one raised bed that I have cucumber, zucchini, bell pepper and chili pepper in. I had to plant my green beans in the ground about a couple feet away from the raised bed. I tilled it up with a gas powered tiller, almost killed me lol, but grass and that tall Johnson grass has taken over. The bean plants are still growing but I’m afraid they won’t produce as much since the are competing with the grass. I’m in Ohio, which I believe is Zone 5, and I’m a mid fifties man with a bad back so weeding is out of question. Should I have put landscape fabric down before I planted my green beans? Sorry this was so long.

    Brassicas, starts
    Kale ... incredibly hardy
    Brussel sprouts
    Cabbages
    Cauliflower
    Seeds right into the ground:
Peas in the shade, part shade
    Beans
Root crops, also right into the ground, after soaking seeds first
    Beets
    Spinach
    Carrots
    Swiss chard
Cold hardy lettuce, cover during frost,
    sow lettuce underneath bean plants
    Rutabagas
    Parsnips

I started having major success and loving gardening when I started this method: much less watering, practically no weeds, wood chips/greens break down to fertilize the soil, and many other benefits. Free 90 minute documentary @ Backtoedenfilm.com. He does free tours every Sunday during the summer in Sequim WA (see the site to register). It has become a worldwide phenomenon, and many people are willing to give free tours if you are not near western Washington.

Definitly worth your time, and once well established it does not take quite that much time at all.
I would grow an edible garden, with emphasis on plants that will be there for you year after year.
Plants that keep giving, or come back next year:
.dwarf fruit trees, or even mini dwarf fruit trees, for easy reach harvesting
.asperagus, take time to get established, but are well worth it
.sunchokes-very invasive and you wont be able to get rid of them, so be sure you want them. Root bulps are edible raw or cooked. Tall plant and butterflies love the flowers. Good food source for people too.
      .strawberries - everbearing variety
      .goose berries, red/green
.blue berries, only do well in acidic soil
      .service berries
      .currant bushes
      .thyme
      .oregano
      .mint
      .rosemary
      .lemon balm
      .self seeding spinach
      .green onions
      .chives
      .grapes
      .dandylions
      .rubarb
I also would add things that are really easy to grow. Like bush beans, more then one variety. Tomatos, also potatos in buckets.
Regrowing vegetables from the grocery store is worth learning, and actually easy once you understand how.
I would as well learn how to save my own seeds, and how to propagate cuttings. I would look into unusual plants, heirlooms. See rareseeds.com Great resource.
      Happy gardening to all.

I would also plant onions leeks chives green onions chalots to avoid pests and rabbits. They don't like them.
Also many marigolds, but keep dead flower heads picked for more production, and as next years flower seeds. Some pesty bugs do not like marygolds, plus they are so beautiful. I plant various colors and they look so pretty in my garden
