Now thats an excellent video. You went above and beyond. Not only did you show the process of making the sumac-ade but even showed the tree, and even alerted the viewers of the poison sumac and then explained how to tell them apart.. and in under 3 minutes! Thank you for making this video Kelly. I look forward to watching your other videos. God bless you and your family.
picked some and searched and there you were with this awesome video
So cool!! thank you so much for this video!! I always use Sumac as a spice but this drink must be yummy.
I like to take as many stems out as possible, they are a little bitter, then I let it step in very hot water, boil or near boil shut off, then remove from heat, toss in the berries, smash them around with a potato masher, then strain, it works faster than over night.
This is one of my favorite summertime drinks!
Great video, thanks.
Awesome video. I have a tree in my yard. I thought I should be able to do something edible with it. I can't wait till it blooms again this summer. I will definitely try it.
i hate it that I only just now ran across your Chanel Kelly. I hope you will have more videos saved back but will keep finding new things to share... you have a natural way and form and are good at "presentation" After watching 4 other videos on the same topic...your's is the only one that made me want have a glass of Sumac Tea....Thanks
Your comment made my day!! :) Thank you so much for your encouragement and kind words! I truly appreciate it.
Very well orchestrated video. Thank you Kelly. I've picked the berries and will forthwith make the tea!
I hope you enjoy it, George! And thank you for your kind words!
It was very easy to make via your method and it was intensely red and tart. I mixed a fair amount of honey in but it was still pretty strong. Seem to remember that they made it in Mexico with a lighter touch. Next time I'll try it with fewer berries and more water.
you are great !!!
I've never had sumac, but this drink looks lovely! I must see if I can get sumac in Colombia.
Paleo Star I hope you can find some!
Its here in the U.S. and I just found out in a video thats its over in Palestine so theres a chance it could be all over the world. Seeing this comment is 5 years old.. im wondering if you had any luck in finding it.
These Staghorn Sumacs are tasty and if you find Skunkbush Sumacs, they are a little more tart but smaller.
Can you make it also from the ground spice?
What a cutey!
I found a whole patch of Sumac, and am air layering a couple of the trees, although I'm not sure if it's staghorn sumac... anyways I like chewing on the seeds... Hopefully I can get a few to germinate, I think the ones I'm air layering are male plants. The female ones have the berries on them.
Oh yeah and I wanted to add, I'm making Sumac-ade from one of the colas, and if you make it like sun tea, it will be stronger and darker red... I think because it's warmer and the saturation point of a liquid increases with temperature. I just have it in a closed jar on my patio, gonna vacuum filtrate it later with a Buchner funnel.
And I'm using Fragrant Sumac
I've been drinking about a quart of this a day for like 2 days now, and I must say it's better than practically anything you could get at a grocery store... I added a pasteurization step too.
I got whole bunch more Fragrant Sumac from Kill Creek, and it seems like there are 2 different species of it around here, and phenotypes within the species. Some are more sweet and some are more sour.
It gives me a little boost too, like coffee or tea.
So awesome!
Indians like it. Thats good enough for me.
Hi Kelly I have never seen wild sumac in Australia. Would this work with powdered sumac. I am wondering if the health benefits might be lost in the powdering of he sumac and am hoping you might know. Thanks Di :)
Diane McWhinney Hey Diane! Powdered sumac would be perfect! I am planning on making powder out of my sumac - no benefits lost :)
How to use its powder? How to make tea out of sumac berry powder?
I've never heard about sumac before, it is so interesting although I don't think I'll be able to find them where I live. I will start looking around and by the way, you are very beautiful! :)
***** Hope you can find some! And thank you, that was so sweet of you :)
@ beautymariely . Sumac is da bomb. They're berries. Healthy tasty alternative to salt
What stores do you buy sumac
Noura Smith Amazon has Organic Sumac Powder
Kelly is smart and beautiful!!
used sumac as a spice, not as a drink.. shall try
Yes its quite often used here in the U.S. as a drink. I was pleasantly surprised to watch Palestinians using it as a spice. Theres a youtube channel called something like "Cafe Izz" which is a cafe that just opened up in Palestine and one of their videos is a short video showing how they process the sumac as a spice. That was the first time I saw it being used as a spice. I just hope the Palestinians know its just as delicious when made as a lemonade.
Staghorn Sumac?
Yes. Now everyone try to get sumac. Not all store in stock. Sold out. I get the info from ig @berkatmadinah
Sumac berries is are very sour. I would not be able to drink it without some kind of sweetener, preferably honey. My jaws hurt watching you drink it. :-)
:)
Great method! And it's "Native Americans" not Indians :) amazing wild edible - thanks for the video.
I have friends that are Crow, Santee, Northern Cheyenne, and Cree. None of them call themselves “Native Americans.”
And they still use this recipe. Saying “Indians used to use this recipe” is problematic. Maybe feature recipes from your own heritage.
You could have highlighted the health benefits instead of sipping away
