  • MORE FROM THE R&D DEPARTMENT: IS IT POSSIBLE TO SAIL A CATAMARAN, MAINSAIL ONLY, SOLO, WITH NO RUDDERS IN HIGH WIND.
    For this test I used a 2001 Hobie Tiger. Quite an interesting/tricky/unnearving outing.

    What an epic trip, Joe!! I've always wondered how that'd be. I've been able to sail a monohull with no rudder using the jib, but this was awesome! Especially the backwards sailing! Great stuff, mate!

      Thanks very much.
      Not easy, but possible.....

    Nice! I actually was wondering if you had tried sailing with no rudders. Good to understand this for learning how to park a catamaran on the start line too.

      @JoyriderTV  23 дня назад

      Yes, definitely. No rudders is similar to when the boat isn't moving so the rudders don't do anything.

    happened to me on a Temp scow in strong weather in Langebaan... rudder snapped clean off below the transom.... I managed to sail the 800 m back to the beach using the main and jib by sheeting in which would bring the nose into the wind then slacking off main and jib to bear off again - repeat repeat above got me home

      Yes, it's very handy to know that it's possible when the time comes.
      Great stuff - I'm a big fan of Langebaan for sailing.

    Great test, Joe. I’m going to try steering with the sail the next time I have to leave at low tide and can’t put the rudders down right away.

      It certainly works very well - with a crew and the jib out - even better

    You now do what Richard Woodget, the captain of the clipper Cutty Sark, had to do.
    As a boy, he stole a sailing boat that had no rudder. So he taught himself sailing with the sail alone in one afternoon and returned the boat without anyone having noticed the loss.
    He was one of the few big ship captains that enjoyed small boat sailing. He kept a dinghy on the Cutty Sark that he sometimes sailed while they were waiting for their cargo.
    In his time that was wool from Australia, the times for tea races had ended when he took over the command.
    So you are in full british sailing tradition.

      Yes, continuing the tradition!!

    Great video.. Some questions.. what settings did you put on the downhaul and mast rotation? To what extent do these mechanisms play a role in this situation?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  24 дня назад

      I set the boat up to be sailed with minimum mainsheet on - so downhaul loose and mast rotation at the shroud.
      I'd like to try it again actually with the rudders off completely but that would be more dangerous

    I was wondering if you tried dragging your feet in the water to try and turn the boat? I do this to slow down coming into my landing plus it also turns the boat if i do not steer against my foot

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  23 дня назад

      It would slow the boat down but I think the steering effect would be minimal.
