    I have this theory that the Marvel character "The Sentry" was really an attempt to bring Marvelman into the Marvel Universe without having to get involved in the legal hassle surrounding him. The parallels between the two are numerous especially in the first Sentry miniseries. Both heroes have been "forgotten" in their worlds and reduced to mere mortals for mysterious reasons when we first meet them. Both of their mortal identities are plagued by dreams of their time as superheroes. Both are in marriages that are on the rocks. And both characters are essentially deconstructions of Silver and Golden Age comics.
    Read the original SENTRY miniseries, not the subsequent appearances by the character since they clearly had no clue what to do with him after that. And tell me if it doesn't read like a retread of Marvelman. Hell I expected the Sentry to be revealed as Marvelman once Marvel gained ownership of the character.

      Thank you sir. It is just a theory until I can find someone involved with the Sentry miniseries to admit that I'm right. Officially the Sentry miniseries was created to do a story about a supposed "real" Marvel superhero who was forgotten. The creators even got Stan Lee to go along with the hoax that the Sentry had been a real Silver age Marvel hero. Still I was amazed by the similarities between the Sentry and Marvelman.

      Absolutely a retread of Marvelman! I had been away from comics for about eight years, when a new work friend brought me the Sentry collection to try to pull me back in. I read it, and told him how good it was back when Alan Moore wrote it years before!

      albion65 I never gave much thought, being a Yank and all. Upon reading your analysis, I believe that you are correct. I’ve always thought that Sentry was Superman but you’ve convinced me otherwise. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Sentry/MM connection. Also, what great injustices that the corporate owned “Big Two “ have committed over the years. An unfair claim that Captain Marvel is a Superman ripoff, years later DC buys Cap and uses him extensively. Marvel has a shit fit over the Marvelman name and now they own him! I’m glad that I stopped giving money to these unscrupulous outfits years ago!

    • @metal87power
      @metal87power 5 лет назад +5

      Yeah, what you speak of is only Alan Moore's rewriting of MM character. The original was a shameless rip-off of "Captain Marvel/Shazam". The similarities are so shallow you could compare Batman and Blue Beetle. Sentry and MM are two different characters.

    I was one of those British kids who ran down to the market every Saturday morning to hand over his sixpence coin to buy a black and white book of dreams called Marvelman. Even though I later began to read about the many colourful American superheroes Marvelman was and still is my favourite.

    The 80s series by Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman is a superb must read. It is incredibly dark and examines what would happen if beings with such god-like powers really existed and the impact it would have on humanity (especially if one of them was insane).

    1. The original Captain Marvel stories happened on Earth-S (Fawcett comics) from the DC Pre-Crisis multiverse. Until Crisis on Infinite Earths, were Earth-S Merged with Earth-One (DC Comics: Silver Age), Earth-Two (DC Comics: Golden Age), Earth-Four (Chartlon Comics) and Earth-X (an earth based on Quality comics) into New Earth (Earth-0) Later this earth will be rebooted again on Flashpoint, New Earth will Merged with the Wildstorm Universe (Earth-50) and the Vertigo Universe into Prime Earth (Earth 0). Later the multiverse came back on infinite crisis, Earth-5 will appear, the home of a classic Captain Marvel, after Flashpoint Earth 5 became home of the original Captain Marvel, meanwhile on Earth 0 exists the modern Shazam.
    2. Meanwhile MarvelMan/ MiracleMan stories happens on Earth-18 of the Marvel Multiverse.

    Big fan of eclipse comics, back in the day and was blown away by Moore's Miracle man series.
    I checked out the older Marvel man stories when they got reprinted and they had that same goofy charm as the GA shazam stuff.
    While it was nice that Gaiman's Golden Age arc of Miracle man finally got completed and collected, it's a shame that marvel has done nothing with MM past the reprints.

    This video fills me with admiration for the tenacity and resoucefulness (not to mention the pluck and luck) of Marvelman's creator Mick Anglo. I'm reminded of the Anerican comic book artist who famously said, "Never draw what you can trace .. never trace what you can cut up and paste down." As a loyal fan of the original Captain Marvel, I'm delighted to learn about two new members of what I call "the broader Captain Marvel family" -- Anglo's Captain Miracle and Miracle Man. Or is it three? The copy of "Masterman Comcis" depicted early in the video appears to show a boy-to-adult-hero transformation similar to those of Captain Marvel and Marvelman. Can you tell us anything more about Masterman? Did Masterman Comics have any relationship with Fawcett's Master Comics (which featured Captain Marvel, jr. as its headliner)?

    Only one point of pedantry: chances are Alan Moore said he would have "given his eyeteeth", not his "eye and teeth". It's an old English expression - "eyetooth" is an old name for the cuspids or canines.

    Did I already post this here?
    I used to subscribe to Warrior when it first came out ... from issue #1.
    I don't know about the lawsuit with Eclipse going on back then.
    All I know is when Marvelman Special No 1 hit is when the controversy and lawsuits started to happen.
    The way I heard it, the stateside Marvel Comics didn't even know about Marvelman and that it was the British-branch of Marvel Comics went after "Marvelman" for causing confusion in the marketplace. Which was odd, seeing as the big Marvel Comics title published in England was called Rampage. If you look at the early covers of Rampage, you will see quite clearly something that doesn't stand out the word "Marvel". I'm not even seeing it on some of the books at all and others in small type and then later being made bigger on the front of the books (timing-wise with Marvelman? I'm unsure). I think I just remember seeing the ads for Rampage in Doctor Who weekly.... or maybe they were actually in Warrior as well? I can't remember. that was quite a while ago.

      Hi Gage! Personally, I would go after the original issues. You can pick them up pretty cheap.

      FizzFop1, thanks for the recommendation. I’ll be sure to pick those issues up. Also, should Miracleman get his own Netflix series?

  • @gagecrawley6223
    @gagecrawley6223 5 лет назад +1

    I think Miracleman should get his own series on either Netflix or Amazon Prime. I think this character and story is too deep and too complex for the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not that they couldn’t do it. They certainly could, but I don’t think Disney would take the idea and concept seriously enough. Also, we need a Miracleman action figure. 🤔

      I keep hoping they will do something with MM. His story is too good to pass by. Outside of Black Panther and the fictional country of Wakanda, All of the MCU has been based in the U.S. I think it would be very interesting to have a British character.

    Nighthawk was a British comic book superhero with mechanical wings in 1931.

    Mick Anglo created Marvelman in 1954 so well into the UK SILVER age of comics and certainly not the British Golden age.The UK suffered the Blitz but NOT a blitz krieg which is a totally different thing.

      Hi Terry, Duly noted! I didn't really think about it when I making this video, but The Blitz and blitz krieg are two different things. Good call.

      As a Brit and collector of British comics, I've always thought that, given the nature/format of the publications the idea of "Golden", "Silver" etc should be applied to the two types, i.e. comics and (American style) comic books. Anyway, many would regard the appearance of The Eagle comic in 1950, just a few years before Marvelman, as at least a Golden moment. I still remember my delight in reading the first issue having detoured on my cycle school route to get my hands on it - so different from the Beano, Dandy etc

    I would love to see a video about E-Man, originally from Charlton/Modern Comics and passed from company to company like First comics, etc. I've always wondered why E-Man didn't go over to Marvel after they picked up Charlton's IP.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  6 лет назад

      Hi darkonturas!!! E-Man is on my list for bronze age characters, but I think it was DC that picked up the Charlton characters. I noticed several Charlton characters did not make it over to DC...E-Man, Son of Vulcan, Fighting 5, and Gunmaster. I'm sure there's a few others that I missed. I have no idea how they didn't get them in the deal as well?

      Hi Lance! I did a lot of research on Blackhawk while doing The Heap. The Heap made his first appearance in a Sky Wolf story. Sky Wolf was a total swipe of Blackhawk. It turned out that the creators of Skywolf had worked on Blackhawk the year before. Blackhawk is a character I really hadn't thought about...but he would make a good video...I believe he was the last movie serial produced.

      Hi echozgus!!! Believe it or not, The Black Cat was one of the first videos I wrote a script for...never started editing it. I planned on doing some live action on it. I know a model who is into martial arts...she wanted to do it, but I ran into some problems with her schedule and I always have issues getting costumes. It just sort of fell through. Maybe I should contact her to see if she is still game?

    Comics are a funny business. Imagine Dumas suing Pyle( inarguably better art and story) over Robin Hood. or Mallory suing T.H. White over King Arthur. There should be some kind of zeitgeist copyright clause once a character reaches some kind of quantifiable cultural saturation.

    MM is said to be related to Captain Britain he maybe his father? But there another character in Marvel that has a similar story to MM Sentry is there's an connection here or maybe a clash between these two in a future story?
