Big, heavy, crazy fast and kinda hot - Alienware M18 Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 авг 2024
- 2023 is the year of the 18" gaming laptop, and almost all manufacturers introduced such big-screen behemoths in their notebook line-ups.
Alienware's M18 embraces the new-form factor and is the biggest and heaviest gamer with such a massive screen. The sleek-looking gaming monster may run a bit hot at the CPU side of things, but it is mostly doing everything else right and may be the ideal candidate for everyone looking for a powerful, well-equipped desktop replacement.

I love your videos, clear voice, clear view, straight to the points. Keep it up🙌
Thanks a lot! We really appreciate your feedback and support!
Love you review it with the benchmark ! ❤
I am very glad you like our videos!
Sorry for off topic: Did you see the price and specs of the Framework 16? What are your first thoughts?
Howsthe raw performance ? i am gonna connect it to an oled monitor for gamign and trading . so hows the performancewith nvidia optimus off (doesnt it incrase performance ? )
or should i go for another laptop ? like ge 78hx or even scar 18 ? most of the time it will be connected to monitor
i’m thinking of buying the base version of this laptop to run games like starfield and cyberpunk. do you think it’ll run those games easily?
Great review, I also love your wallpaper - does this come with the unit or is it aftermarket?
I found it on unsplash.com
and thanks for the kind words, we are glad to have you around! :)
Did you get the chance to see the FHD 480Hz screen on this laptop? I'm very interested in getting the 13980HX version, but we have just the FHD units with those in my area.
I'm wondering if the PPI advantage of the QHD screen would make a significant difference within reasonable sitting distance.
I did not see it in person, but my colleaque on the website reviewed the FHD panel:
www.notebookcheck.net/Alienware-m18-R1-laptop-review-Bigger-and-heavier-than-the-MSI-Titan-GT77.703874.0.html
I need a new laptop and I'm undecided between Alienware m18 R2, HP OMEN 16 and Legion Pro 5i Gen 9. My budget would be 2k euro more or less. I think i would exclude Legion because the OMEN offers higher specs for less price. But I want to ask anyway. Which one would you recommend? I owned an Alienware 17 in the past and I was really happy with it until the screen went black and couldn't be replaced. Now I'm running on an Asus ROG Strix Scar II for about 5 years and I absolutely hated it to the core.
Looking on the Dell website, the Alienware m18 is less equipped hardware wise compared to OMEN and the price is higher, but I don't know the other so I can't say if is reliable or not. What would you recommend? Is there any other laptop on the same price range and same specs that is worth checking out? (No Asus, thanks! 😂)
Nice review..Should get one in the mail today ..
Sweet! Happy gaming!
Great review as always. Any bagpack recommendation for this machine?
Unfortunately not. Someone said Alienware is offering one, but I wasn’t able to find it 😅
@@NotebookcheckReviews Damn. I have heard the same. I have been searching for that bag since a month but no luck so far. Thank you for the reply though.
It was very good review indeed.I have some questions is it better than x16 considering both having rtx 4060.Also what should be better buy rtx 4070 laptop or rtx 4060 laptop.
The 4070 is a waste of money. The x16 is more practical, but if you don't travel much get the 18 as the power limits and cooling are better.
We will get an X16 soon for a review then I can answer your question. But yeah, the X16 is the sleeker, much more fashionable machine.
I agree with Julian. It might be better to get either a 4060 or stomach a 4080. The RTX 4070 is in a very weird place this year!

Excellent review, snappy but with a lot of data. These extra couple of minutes add a lot of depth. Especially the closing remarks, contextualizing it against it's nearest competitors is crucial for any product review.
And yes, my biggest gripe with it is how mid-tier the screen options are. In a world where OLED and MiniLED are trending towards mainstream, even common lineups are sporting 400/500 nit displays. For their "absolute flagship" device, these screens are far too workmanlike.
None of the new 18 inch laptops from Dell, Asus, Acer or Razer are OLED or mini LED. Whoever makes the panel doesn't offer it.
Thanks Igor! :)
I am still torn about the screen situation. While I would have preferred higher brightness as well, MiniLED and OLEDs also have disadvantages! And considering the M18 is actually priced reasonably well, I can definitely live with the QHD panel!
@@NotebookcheckReviews I don't mean they necessarily must include a miniled or OLED display, but I would expect at least something like the 500 nit traditional LEDs like Lenovo or ASUS is doing throughout their entire lineup.
Agreed, a solid QHD panel with wide colour gamut coverage, decent factory calibration, Screen Profiles and snappy response times should be standard with high-end notebooks.
I paid 2424.00 usd for a 4090 with 7945hx and 1660p screen and 16 gig ram and 500 gig nvme with rakuten cash back and dells deals. Idgaf about 500 nits or mini led. If i wanted that shit id drop 4 or 5 grand on the msi or somethin🤷♂️
I paid 80 bucks for an accidental damage warranty for a year . Hint hint. Accidental.
How would you choose between the Alienware M18 and the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i for gaming and student work like programming?
The Legion is A LOT more portable than the M18. So if I were to move my laptop a lot, I would get the Legion. If you use your laptop stationary most of the time, I might lean more towards the M18
I’m about to get a laptop and have been looking at this one and for me it has Intel with the same stuff as you and AMD with the 7945HX with both having RTX 7090 and want to know if I should get AMD or Intel for gaming and other stuff on the side that can run pretty good. I also want to know if I should get something else than the M18 and if so what should I buy. Idk why but whenever I look at the best Laptops even though this isn’t in the list I can’t stop going back to it.
I liked it a lot, but it is also really, really chunky. I have been using the Blade 18 from Razer for a few weeks now and also like it a lot. It's a little bit slower (marginally) and much easier to transport.
is it as heavy as the 20 inch was?
great information. question: I am thinking of getting the M18 laptop. I have dual AW3418DW monitors. how would I connect them without a docking station. If needed, could you recommend a docking station that works with Alienware laptops. thank you
You really would not need a docking station. Since the M18 does have a mini-display por and HDMI in the back. If you want to drive both display at the same refresh rate you can also use one of the TB4s. That will be such a sick setup! :O
Does tomb raider and sims games play well with this?
Perfect! Thanks 🙌
No problem 😊
Will this gaming laptop still be good if I get the cheapest parts that are available? Like the RTX 4060, and the 16 GB: 2 x 8 GB, DDR5, 4800 MT/s
It will most likely perform as it should, considering that all 4060 are pretty close to each other this year!
Everything else apart from performance will still be applicable from our review to the lower-end configs.
Great video!
Waiting my m18 (already in Production stage). Alex, can you name those beautiful rgb lamps in your videos? They are awesome!

amazing review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Is this the best 18 inch gaming laptop on the market right now? This is the one Im leaning towards for the design and my last couple of laptops have also been Dell
There is not really something like "the best" since it depends a lot on what you expect from your machine. But I found the M18 to be one of the most well-balanced 18".
Alienware: you should tolerate the drawbacks I have mentioned.
Razer: you must tolerate the keyboard layout, missing keys and price.
Acer Helios / Triton: wobbly keys and not mechanical, otherwise ok, AFAIK.
Scar: unnecessarily expensive, except for more RAM see Strix.
Strix: more or less ok but with several slight drawbacks incl. only 32GB, wobbly keys and permanent blinking lights.
Alex would say: choose your poison! I say: build a desktop:)
The question remains why no manufacturer can offer a notebook that has desktop quality in every respect and is not a rip-off. --robert jasiek

I just got the M18 R2 recently and really love it. My previous computer was the M17 R5 and it was great too. I'm a Developer so the 32 cores is what I was really after and it's very impressive. As expensive as this was, I really wish I had spent the extra $450 on the 4090 @ 16GB vs the 4080 @ 12 GB. I could exchange it but that was my fault.

Beautiful laptop I love the ALIENWARE and I like the ALIENWARE M16, I am between that the LENOVO LEHION SLIM and THE NEW HP OMEN 16 which I would lean towards a serious construction and thermals, One question, is the Alienware chassis made of plastic or aluminum?at BESTBUY they have the Alienware m15 for 1500 amd 6800 cpu and 3070ti gpu
Those two diagonal inches of screen real estate are *_huge_*
Why put the sd card reader on the back and the RJ45 port on the side? That's backwards design. Same with the flipped motherboard. I bet if this had a standard motherboard layout, you can comfortably repaste with liquid metal and custom fan curves to reduce temps
They already use liquid metal.
I agree that the SD-card on the side would have made more sense. But there must have been an engineering reason for it!
I will wait for better screen options
Going to buy mine next week friday
Awesome, congrats! 💪🏻
Do you know if its good for vr gaming? Do you think i need to get a cooling pad?
I haven't tried any VR gaming, but with that much horsepower, you should not have any problems.
I do not think a cooling pad would help a lot.
@@NotebookcheckReviews do you see any issues with cpu overheating while playing? also any recommendation on a good external monitor to connect this to?
Good review. I subbed. I'm looking to buy a Dell Alienware m18 R2 Gaming Laptop. It has NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060, 8 GB GDDR6, 32 GB: 2 x 16 GB, DDR5, 5600 MT/s, non-ECC, dual-channel. WIndows 11 Pro. $2059. Is that a good price?
Hello. Just found your channel. I own an m18 but I seem to have a problem with the command centre. It loads and opens up and I can select and customize fan profiles but when I go to the rgb section its just a grey background so I can't customize the rgb at all. Would be great if someone had a solution for this problem. Thanks in advance.
Did you upgrade it, or checked if there is an upgrade available? Then this would be something for the Alienware Support I am afraid!
@NotebookcheckReviews thanks for the reply yes it is fully up to date and alwsdy check for updates. Guess I'll have to contact them. Thanks for your reply anyways 😁
what is the best screen resolution for this laptop? fhd or qhd?
Personally I would opt for the QHD panel!
FHD is ugly as hell and horrible for reading/browsing web, especially on a display of this size. Go for QHD or 4k display
10:13 That ROG Strix Scar 18" running for 7 hours in the battery life section... Impressive. That may be an option of the Framework 16 doesn't last long enough.
Yeah, Asus did really well with the Scars, the G16 is pretty insane as well!
so after owning this laptop for the past 5 months here's my personal experience.
the screen has lots of light bleeding and seems a common problem.
the build quality is good but my previous model alienware 15 R3 felt better.
I hade lots of software problems that apparently came from the alienware support assistant app conflicting with the Dell support assistant.
I had to do a fresh restart and let only one app take care of all the updates.
the alienware app that controls performances feels really buggy and I gave up playing with the configurations, I let the balanced one always running.
except that everything is good.
edit.
in the Nvidia control panel also I had to manually select the option to use my graphic card, because automatically was only using the integrated one and never my 4070 for who knows what reasons.
HI there, and thank you for sharing your experience!
Hello,
If I understand well the 4090 is in fact a 4070 GPU ?
I"m looking for a PC dedicated to VR and pro work
Thanks
From what I saw the 4090 mobile has performance similiar to a 4070ti desktop (in a best case scenario)
The Scar 18 lasts for more than 7hrs? I'm shocked. That's pretty good considering it's an i9-HX processor.
The Scar doesn't last for 7 hours...I've researched it...about 5-6 with light internet stuff just like the M18
@@stefos6431 but M18 in this video lasts only 4h
I want Asus to take notes by seeing the keyboard layout of the M18. That is a perfect keyboard. Maybe ignoring the media control keys. But the problem for staying away from the M18 is bcoz of the inverted motherboard and also the worst speakers so far this year. Costs ridiculously expensive in my country. But I think Asus might change next year,so Iam sticking with them.
I want ASUS to take notes on shipping out a laptop that isn't faulty and then backing it with a customer service who is competent and receptive to help the customer. ASUS is not what they used to be. Their quality control is slipping to where they are finishing last place on quality assurance claims. And then their customer service team is being overloaded with customer complaints and have gotten to a point where they try to deny warranty claims and try to pass off responsibility to either the consumer or the retailer they bought it from. It's a nightmare being an ASUS customer these days just for those two points alone.
ASUS needs to focus on fixing their customer service department as well as slowing down the assembly line just a bit so that they can catch the bugs and defects in their products BEFORE they hit the market. That's what I want ASUS to take notes on.
Hello what's the model/make of the monitor at 8:45?

Alienware m18 was on my short list. 16:10, no PWM, mechanical keyboard, ordinarily sized arrow keys, solid chassis, acceptable Furmark noise (even more so with 4080, I suppose) and meanwhile better bug fixes would give a good desktop replacement. I have had to build a desktop nevertheless for the following reasons:
1) the large fans cannot be removed and cleaned unless the notebook is almost completely disassembled in a very tedious, very risky procedure. Easy maintenance is mandatory.
2) Months after launch, the German mechanical keyboard is still unavailable. Unexcusable.
3) Dell has tried extraordinarily excessive rip-offs in Germany up to €1900 surcharge for being a German. Maybe there are or will be occasional "sales" down to US price levels (modified by currency conversion and tax) but such is too late. Companies must learn that they cannot insult endconsumers and still expect purchases.
4) Putting labels on the alien heads would still destoy an otherwise clean chassis design. I might have tolerated this though without the objections above. --robert jasiek

Eluktronics solves these issues with the Mech 17 GP2.
Does the motherboard being reversed matter that much? Will it affect the life of the motherboard?
Indirectly by a necessity for disassembly and reassembly of the motherboard and cables to clean also the large fans from time to time from dust. Eventually, mistakes will happen during this process and can damage the motherboard. You know, if something can go wrong, it will. The design is planned obsolescense. Every vacuum cleaner tells us that regular cleaning the device from dust is a necessity. Otherwise, it becomes louder and hotter and eventually the fans and so the notebook will stop working. Much dust next to hot chips can even be a fire hazard. Cleaning fans every circa three months would be good practice but the design discourages it. --robert jasiek

No one was forced to anything during the production of this video! ;)
fyi nvidia mobile 4090 is equivalent to desktop 3080ti, so you are basically overpaying for a 3080. it's a scam.
I am afraid I have to disagree with you here.
Comparing our 3DMark ratings, the mobile 4090 is on par with a desktop 3090 ti (both 65%) and about 10% faster than a desktop 3080 Ti.
And if you make a generational comparison, the laptop RTX 3080 Ti was about 28% slower than a desktop 3080 Ti, whereas a mobile RTX 4090 is about 35% slower than a desktop 4090.
So the performance gap between the desktop and laptop chips has always been there, and I would not call it a scam but rather physics.
Nothing new mobile parts are always less performant for obvious reasons

I really think that now days Alienware is garbage. Usually temperatures are bad, the laptop is way oversized/overweight, and has a flipped motherboard. Also, the paint is horrible, after a few months it's bad.
Why is the flipped motherboard a problem when you can still access the RAM and NVME slots? I was daily driving an X17 last for about 3 months and did not notice any problems with the paint during that time.
@@NotebookcheckReviews When you want to properly clean the fans/heatsinks, or repaste, it's unnecessary extra work. The is no real benefit to flip it. Especially in such a huge chassi.
@@NotebookcheckReviews Sorry. Regarding the paint, both my brothers with the 2022 models has paint comming off or a bit of paint bubbles near the hot parts of the chassi (rear vents).
It's not kind of hot, it's extremely hot. Here's what to except with this laptop. As far as games go and set to the highest settings with ray tracing on max. My PS5 and Xbox does a better job. I sent mine back to dell for a refund. I had the 4080 with the 1080 X 1200 display which does not support HDR. Bottom line, don't believe the hype if you're a gamer.
what you bought after this laptop?
@@rc2k524 I have the ibuypower Y60 desktop with the i9 cpu and 4070 Ti gpu. It is the best I ever had for gaming. I highly recommend..
