August 1939 Polands economy was ranked 20th in the world . 1989 when Poland regained its freedom it was ranked ruffly the 100th biggest economy in the world . Getting back to where it used to be . Nothing shocking about it .

I'm in Poland at the moment. The difference is clear: a young, dynamic, intelligent, hard-working and polite people with a clear pride in their nation (if the number of Polish flags is anything to go by). It makes Britain look tired and giving up. Not only will Poland's GDP be higher by 2030, its quality of life has already overtaken the UK, with cheap prices, affordable housing and great public transport. If we were still in the EU, I'd be happy to put down roots here.

Brits don’t learn much about the history of the continent, they do speak any languages, don’t understand the current affairs and they don’t have much information on what’s going elsewhere.

Living in Warsaw last 2 years, Poland is incredibly doing well and with its educated, open minded people; well mannered culture; society respecting nature and others' background... it deserves to be far ahead in the game. Never experienced another country in Europe who is hungry to learn other (non-anglo saxon) identities and history

Why GDP largely do not matter and is a flawed incicator? Living in both Uk and Poland i realized that Polish familly is doing way better than British one on average for some years now, 70% of the population in Poland owns an house or flat, have good car, way better services, better communication, better health care, polish cities are packed with bootics, restaurants, lots of small shops, something that i saw dissapearing from Uk's towns and i would argue the slaray purchase power is better in Poland as well in last 2-4 years. Visiting friends in both countries, polish houses looks clean and luxurious in comparison.
I think Uk has failed to create a diversified economy, meanwhile holding to very generous social money giveaway festiwal, they could not afford long term and that was abused by lazy shits from abroad and lower society paracites that should be out there working. Shamely, Poland is doing the same, with each party throwing out new handouts for this and that bullshit...
The point about the economy not being diversified is actually really important. Poland has a robust industrial and service industry. The UK has only a thriving financial industry, whose profits however are mostly shifted to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, America, etc. And the industrial sector was deliberately destroyed by the Tories to kill the old Labour Party.

I mean Poland used to be in the top 10 economies in the world, and biggest country in Europe at one point, but they suffered the Swedish Deluge in which 25% of them died in the 1600s, followed by partitions by Germany,Austria and Russia which then used their populace as conscripts to fight each other and their land was being used as the main battle ground on the eastern front of WW1, and more recently WW2 in which 20% of them died and Warsaw was erased off the map and had to be rebuilt brick by brick, not to mention 50 years of forced communism after. WW2 didn't even end in 1945 for Poland, while people were celebrating on the streets of London, Polish resistence fought the USSR into the 50s, so yes Poland after just 30 years of freedom and peace is getting back to where they naturally should be.
Due to the extremely flawed political system of the Commonwealth (as it was called - it wasn't just poland but also lithuania and ruthenia) and the culture at the time, I would say that what happened in the 17th, and later 18th century is more like a symptom than a cause...

The golden veto was abolished in a new constitution, cant remember what year in the 1700s, but Poland abolishing the veto meant it could no longer be controlled by foreign powers from within which lead to Catherine the Great invading, followed by Prussia, which wiped the nation off the map. Had they been given a chance at statehood under this new constitution without Russia and Prussia invading they would have prospered again.

I suspect (I may be wrong) that it is about dividing the rest of Europe into better ones (France, Germany) with which to compete, and worse ones (Poland and the rest of Central Europe) which is only supposed to provide hands for simple jobs, and the fact that they are outperforming the British economically is a sign of the very poor state of the economy.
Poland used to be the eponymous "poor country" + it's too far for the UK (France, and so on) to pay close attention to what's happening two countries over.

Slovenia's median standard of living has already overtaken Britain's according to the Financial Times. That's a better indication of the state of play than GDP per Capita. The FT also pointed out that, using the metric of Median Standard of Living, Poland will be overtaking Britain soon.

Who could've imagined in the 80s that Ireland would become richer than the UK? Just because Poland is growing from a small base and has a lot of historic issues to deal with doesn't man they won't outgrow that. Conversely, just because the UK is still relatively wealthy and powerful doesn't mean it can't land very, very roughly if it continues on this trajectory.
Few people are wealthy and rest of UK citizens live from month to month just to pay all expenses and dept if government has money doesn't mean people have many too

Fact is that Poland (actually the whole Eastern Europe) is a huge economic success thanks to EU membership and the Polish people themselves.
The economic center in Europe is shifting East and like it or not, it s bad news for the UK.

I drove through Poland last year and large parts of it now definitely look better off than parts of the UK. Places like South Wales and Stoke look dreadful in comparison.
Newly renovated. Eastern Germany also looks better than the Western part in many places. But there is more to that - Poles are very proud of their country, are more egalitarian and in general the structure of the society is different.
Poland deserves the become a super power again.

Free universities, because of that it realises incomparable more engineers, doctors every year on the work market then uk, poles often spoke more than one language, Poland in last 15 years became a China of European Union and UK. Even after brexit most of your new gutter, windows, toilet & toilet furnitures, all IKEA furnitures are from Poland. Poland was heavy investing into development and infrastructure in last 30 years and it didn’t stop, still continue on the same path. Meanwhile UK stop investing nearly completely in big projects and new roads. I am really sorry Brits but how is your polish?

I've just said goodbye to a friend who, after 17 years, decided to go back because 'perspectives are better back home'.
Of course this is context related, as per video, these projections are big simplifications, but it's really striking how bad UK economy for a normal Joe has become.
And it all started long before brexit.

In what way is Russia declining? Russia recorded the highest rate of growth in the developed world in 2023. Its economy has already overtaken that of Germany by PPP.

If it weren't for the world wars, Poland would be a very wealthy country and would dictate the conditions like Germany does in Europe today. Poland has already been a power in Europe for almost 300 years and I am surprised that European history textbooks forget about this fact.

I am particularly interested in how much wealthier (or poorer) certain regions of the UK are compared to specific parts of Poland. The Warsaw or Gdańsk regions are for example much wealthier than the Bradford area.
In the UK, the difference between rich and "poor" is very large, with most of the wealth being generated in London. People living and working outside of London are considerably less wealthy. Many Poles are already considerable more wealthier than many Britons.
Also, an 8 percent difference in GDP is not really a cause for celebration for the UK.
Hopefully, all the Poles that went home after Brexit will remember how nicely the British people treated them while they were here... when we're immigrants in their country.

@@shif06 the diffrence being, one is culturaly similar, and other is culturaly far diffrent. Ukrainians, believe it or not, mostly are hard working, same with Poles. Illegall immigrants, on other hand, are more unpredictable.
Sunak, Cameron, Boris and Farage have made things worse-much worse-but it wasn't great to begin with. The UK's problem is that it is a stagnant, paternalistic aristocracy/oligarchy. The country has managed to stay afloat because of its head start, cultural and linguistic links to America, and its financial centre, but this isn't sustainable. We should be an innovation-driven, free-market economy, yet we live in a modern version of Downton Abbey with a touch of Jane Austen and William Blake. It's an oligarchy where the rich get richer-inheritance tax is virtually ignored-while the working population is taxed to death. Innovation is discouraged, meaning property/houses are used as a method of investment by the lazy elite rather than a basic need for people. Consequently, house prices are through the roof, meaning the working population is spending more and more time and money paying rent and mortgages instead of channeling it into money-generating opportunities like equities etc. and all of this is largely due to the Conservative Party, the party of the landed class, the lords, and ladies. They love taxes and vehemently oppose capitalism, ensuring everyone knows their place in the class structure. No ‘new money,’ please.

@@Alaryk111UK has a worst Gini index than France. It's more like a disparity between the 1000 billion euros GDP of Paris Ile de France vs the rest of the country (1800 billion €). France is developing the south and the east of the county to balance. UK has the same problem, but no other rich region outside London to compensate. OECD projections and ECB projections show slightly different figures than that of the IMF, and it is highly likely that Poland will overtake the UK within 5 years. There is another reason why this might happen. The Polish population is younger than the English population, and they will see people from abroad returning.

We kicked the Poles out because of Brexit and invited thousands and thousands of Indians in, to replace them. Britain will end up an Indian colony. I have just returned from Poland. Feeling of safety and a country not wracked by the strictures of race and “inclusivity”. They are well versed in their tragic underdog history and are determined to protect their country, their identity and their traditions. We have thrown all that away through complacency.
Regardless if it will overtake the UK by then or not, Poland's growth has been extremely impressive and it will continue to grow at a strong pace for a while.
That's the question what will happen. So far the work is still cheap in Poland, when this is over then I am really curious whether they will make it to become a rich country.

@TG-ts3xn Immigrants seem to work harder than your average brit. Is sad to see so many British people are on drugs or benefits and refuse to work. And these same people are angry that Immigrants are coming to replace them in the job market. The benefit system in this country is encouraging people to be lazy and that is having a huge impact on the economy.

I moved back to Poland from the UK this year and as an IT professional I'm better off financially than I used to be. Let's hope Poland will continue to grow while mainting it's cultural integrity (unlike some of our European neighbours).

@@codswallop164 850k not million of Poles are working and living in UK but this figure from EU - Settled Status now is outdated because the Poles are leaving UK in large numbers. The same goes for Romanians - curriers to Romania are fully booked for a month in advance.
This is not a Polish miracle, but the hard work of Poles who stayed in the country despite difficult conditions. Who learn and work hard for future generations.
Forget the graphs the point is simple. Poland's economy is thriving, ours is not. Ask the questions why and address them. The UK is full of creative talented people that the system is not getting the most out of them and we need a bold plan to grow the economy. Neither Sunak or Starmer are bold enough. Neither have a true vision. they're 'Managers', not leaders.

As a polish person i know this perapective of Poland overtaking UKs gdp must be terryfying for brits.
Poland still doesn't really have oligarchs - help them keep it this way!
There are ppl in companies who earn million per month, getting Rich is easy its about knowledge and spirit and market needs.
Cant happen as it's too late for the formation of oligarchs in Poland. Oligarchs are created by sudden privitisation of state assets, benefiting individuals. As seen at the collapse of the USSR, Russian and Ukrainian individuals were basically able to capture entire state assets like oil companies for themselves through corruption. Poland instead didn't privatise at first and basically had the idea of letting new capitalist private companies compete against the public ones, which worked incredibly well and led to not a single oligarch in Poland and a better wealth inequality than in the U.K. for example.
Poland was poorer than Ukraine back in 1991. Look where Poland is now. No Oligarchs helped for sure.
Brexit really has delivered.
Of course that’s only a prediction, yet apart from the chart there’s also reality. Why not compare transportation in the both countries? The quality of buildings, medical facilities, education or motorways?

I went on an exchange to Lithuania and could tell like 15 years ago that they were going to overtake the UK. Their attitude, hard work, kindness, compared to a lot of unbelievably stupid attitudes from the UK group.
Starmer didn't say anything about it happening by 2030... Poland is still growing faster and will likely overtake the UK in GDP per capita as a result.
Maybe in the forecast they have exaggerated, but still Poland is narrowing the gap with respect to the other European economies
I came back to Poland 6 years ago after 11 y in UK. I don't thing that Poland can overtake UK however a think that overall standard of living in Poland now can already compete with UK.
Poland can get rich pretty quickly on condition that Russia will be peaceful and friendly country. At the moment most of Poland exports go to western Europe.

Hahaha.... Brits are a funny nation. They can't stand the idea that they will be overtaken by a country that was never an empire or a major powerhouse... yet. Having worked and lived in the UK for a while, I am unsurprised that Poland will become much wealthier than Britain. The Polish work ethic is much better; people are better educated, multilingual, and proactive, and for the first time in Polish history, our geographical location works to our benefit. So, it's natural that we will become much wealthier than the UK and hopefully smarter in deciding who can actually live within our borders.

It’s true that it will be harder to have the same growth for Poland in the future.
But even IMF says UK will be only better of by 8%… in just 6years… That’s the whole point, it’s not about exact numbers but rough predictions. And add 10 years more to that and ask IMF if Poland will be better than UK..

@@TG-ts3xn Less and less every day. Dropped from almost perfect hundred to about 90% now, with also tonns of Brits living mostly in Krakow and Warsaw. These numbers are mostly from: Ukraine, Belarus, and other former USSR republics, then South and Southeast Asia (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan), and then Europeans and Africans equally I'd say. Columbians are the new wave these days. Almost all Poles under 50 speak some English, with a lot of those who speak it really well.

It has been plain to see for years that Poland has the potential to be hugely successful based on demographics of working age group...and still got traditional values of work. We have busted UK with service sector mentality of debt funded growth and encouraging low income workers to get entrapped whilst giving incentives to Russian oligarchs ...creative accounting aka pretendy world economy. We have had the benefit of low interest rates until recently and persuaded people to get in debt for household items, cars, holidays and ALL that enriching China instead of using the low rates to build homes for Brits and infrastructure: roads and NHS. Deliberately busted by Tories to enrich themselves and cronies.
because the UK is a country of scam, everything here today is a scam. No wonder everything has ground to a halt, nothing gets built, nothing gets finished and only those who promise and have gov connections are ok in the system.

Taking over by Poland in GDP pure numbers it is best case scenario for Britain to be compared with. This measure only the pursing power of local currency outside the country in facet. In terms of other quality of life like safety, affordability, access to healthcare and education Poland has already matched or surpassed the GB. If I had to move from Poland to GB I am pretty sure it would be a downgrade for me afterall. And this is not even including that feeling of constant rapid development I am used to for the grater part of my life.
The strength of Poland is built on equality, which lies in the middle class. We have one of the smallest social inequalities in the world. Very few very poor and very rich. This is consistent with our mentality because we hate when someone is worse than someone else and for this equality we are able to sacrifice a lot, as well as for our safety. A country that professes such values is for me a country worthy of trust in principle.
