The pattern for much of the war was that, due to the nature of Afghanistan, the VDV helicopter-borne Air-Assault units of the 56th Guards Air Assault Brigade would act on GRU intel to destroy Mujihideen convoys, while the 103rd Guards Airborne Division(usually re-outfitted with heavier equipment usually used in Motor-Rifle divisions) and 345th Independent Guards Airborne Regiment would usually be tasked with the holding of vital outposts, planned ground operations, and as quick-reaction forces for when (worse trained and undersupplied) motor-rifle division units inevitably got themselves into trouble while conducting their typical missions of routine patrol, convoy escort, and routine search missions and guard posts on roads. The end result is that, from the perspective of airborne men like the song’s writer, the only people who ever did anything were airborne while the rest just made messes they had to clean up.
