    hi, that was so refreshing to hear, stuff you've made, but never completed is 'Reborn', perfect, then you introduced your dog, this video is getting better and better. i just do pottery in a small studio session just once a week, in term times and i love it, your way of expressing your words fits well into 'my' and my clay buddies work ethics, we all meet once a week, we all make different things, hand builders, coilers, throwers, but what we all have in common is our love of clay any what we can all make in the time allowed. thankyou for sharing your thoughts and practice x

    Destroying what isn’t your best so you can make it better and show respect to the clay. A philosophy to live by :))

    i’ve watched so many videos on reclaim but this was by far one of the most entertaining and showing the whole process. i’m a new potter and so glad to find your channel!

    I really like what she says at about 1:36 about sunk cost fallacy. So right! So easy to fall into that thinking. Thanks for this video!

    Thank you for clarifying the specifics of this somewhat arduous task. And thank you especially for the clear images and descriptions of the wedging processes.

    Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Reclaiming clay certainly is an arduous process; I collect wild clay on foot on a hill close to my house and then go through the process of purifying it through levigation, then straining it much like one would if you were making cheese, then finding and mixing it with sand temper 😚. It's all worth it when one sees the finished product; if it doesn't have cracks in it 😙. Love your videos, thank you

    Thanks for this... I've been working out of a studio for the past few years and have always just put my scrap clay in their processing area, essentially giving away a LOT of clay that I could reclaim. As of this Summer, I've been saving my clay waste and now have ~60lbs waiting to be reclaimed. This was a good reminder to start working on it, but I'm with you... not looking forward to the part where I have to do any of it! I know it will be fine once I get started, but so far my ability to procrastinate is stronger than my will to do it. ;) (I would also hire someone to do it for me!)

      Haha I feel you girl! Omg it can be over whelming. But also SO satisfying when you make a new beautiful piece out of old reclaim. And YES you are right you are giving away a more clay than you even think. I wish you so much luck with it!

      Agreed! However I was using the term in reference to being a craftsman pertaining to the definition “an activity invoking skill in making things by hand”

    With bone dry bowls pieces you need to trim, you could soak the bottom in a shallow plate for a minute and then it’s usually wet enough to trim! Just a suggestion, I just know I feel like crying when I have to reclaim a piece I could be bothered to trim when it was leather hard.

    My advice would be buying a simple concrete mixing tool. Sth like your drill with the mixer but stronger. I mix a bucket like yours with it, then i put my reclaim on plaster bats. But with the mixer I get really smooth clay and have to spend much less time wedging.

    Ohmygosh PLEASE create a space up from the floor to reclaim the clay. My back is hurting just watching you. I put mine on a craft table with the large wood piece on top.. When done I clean up the wood piece and cover it up with canvas so I can use the table for something else.

    I am just starting to look into ceramics and working with clay. I have not taken a class yet, that will hopefully be in the early part of 2025. I have been wondering about this being possible so I appreciate you sharing your process. Is there a particular length of time that moist clay needs to be used before it goes moldy?

    • @Marlaina_thepotterylady
      @Marlaina_thepotterylady  Месяц назад +1

      I’m so happy to hear you’re pursuing it and taking a class! That’s awesome and I hope you love it.
      You can keep clay in a bag basically forever as long as it’s sealed off and moist. Clay doesn’t have a strict expiration date, but it can develop mold over time due to the moisture content. Mold in clay isn’t harmful and can even improve its workability!
      If your clay starts to get moldy or smell bad just add a little bit of vinegar and de wedge it! It’ll be just fine.

    Instead of destroying your untrimmed bowls make a damp box and 2 days in it your work will be perfect to trim. 😀

    Please please be careful about chopping the clay like that inside while it’s dry!! That dust it makes is a serious problem. I have 3 5 gallon buckets and a 3 gallon bucket to do!! Making sure to use a mixer to really get everything mixed well and hydrated is essential in making reclaimed clay!! You can mix it at any point and then let it sit longer. The longer it sits the more plastic it will be as well. Placing an old bedsheet over the clay will help keep out unwanted guests!! Lol
