Manually-Operated Articulated Paper Costume Wings

  • Manually-operated articulated paper costume wings. No electronics. No CO2 cartridges. Rather than the usual scissor mechanism used in most wing designs, I wanted something that looked more dramatic while opening. I also wanted to use inexpensive and common materials, because I had never attempted this before. This is the only set I made, apart from a partial prototype. I'm posting just to share my solution with others.
    MATERIALS
    Wings are black posterboard coated with oil-based polyurethane varnish (water-based acrylic would wrinkle the paper) to provide some protection from rain. They are folded to mimic feathers and have not been painted. Reinforcement ribs (2 on each side) are pine dowels, the back plate is 3/4" plywood with dados cut in an X, the main pistons/arms are waxed pine strips, string is nylon mason line, dual-purpose string guides and shoulder supports are superpex polyethylene water tubing, and pulleys and axles are wooden craft dowels. One wooden piston/rod slides under the other on the back plate. The tubing is held in place by a wooden strip that is screwed to the back plate and fits into shallow notches cut into the tubing; this allows them to rotate slightly for fit. Tubing can be shaped by slowly stretching and bending the pipe into a hook shape, without heating it. The leading edge of each wing is 30 inches (76cm) and are sized for a child with shoulder height of about 39" (1m). This is the largest size that can be cut from a single sheet of common dollar-store posterboard. Each wing is 3 sections of 3 feathers per section, linked to a folding section that is securely stapled to the front side of the back plate.
    TECHNICAL
    As the string is pulled down over the shoulders, the wooden piston slides up its guide channel and moves the main axle away from the head and also unfolds the first section. A separate anchored string pulls/rotates the pulley inward, the pulley rotates the axle, the axle rotates the topmost wing at the front via a flat wooden plate glued to the inside face of the top wing, and each wing pulls open the wing below it via a curved paper strip and tab on the edge of each wing. The tabs and strips/loops lock the tops and bottoms of the wings together, so that they remain in the same plane when open. (If the tabs and strips were replaced with strings connecting the edges of each wing, the wing tips would flop around and would not retract predictably). When the string is released, the weight of the topmost wing winds the pulley, which causes the pulley to wind itself toward the back plate via the anchored string. A spring is not used in the retraction, because this would make the mechanism more difficult for a young child to open. A wider pulley would make the wings easier to open (more leverage), but this impacts aesthetics. Gravity and a little inertia complete the retraction. Wings are flexible and can be made to flap forward and back by moving the chest forward and back. If the wings stick a little when retracting, one jump will shake them closed. The width and length of each feather section and the depth of the notches are all carefully designed to prevent each section from becoming locked into one another while closing. Each lower section is narrower than the section above so that they all stack within each other when retracted. The string anchored to the pulley keeps a partial fold in the inner wing section which adds dimension, structural stability, and predictable closing. Folds increase the strength of each wing and provide dimension, but also introduce bumps that can affect how well they close. Talcum powder (baby powder) can be used to lubricate sliding parts.

      I'll see what I can do. I know I would need to reengineer them to use more standard materials, or every other step in the tutorial would be about how to cut the next part on the table saw! FYI, a full-size set would be 8 feet across when open and 40 inches top to bottom when closed.

      Chang Bronstien: I hope the second slideshow I recently posted will answer your question. I did not take many reference photos of the original version. If there is interest, I will try to document the build of version 2 for a tutorial later. FYI, in version 2, the pulley is attached directly to the rib on the top wing, at the top. The axle is not glued to anything (well, in the model, anyway).

      I've posted a third short video, where I include a tiled version of the working drawing, video of the scale model, and some pictures of the parts, so far. You should be able to screen cap the drawing pieces and assemble them into a good-quality diagram. But, you'd need to figure out some folds and the slide mechanism dimensions yourself, because I'll work out those details when I assemble everything. Note that some of my wooden parts are more complicated than required (dowel pins), because I am constantly assembling and disassembling.

      @@pineapplz7162 could you link a printable so that we know where to cut stuff also can i substitute the wood for illusration board how how do i make it so that its all just black?.

    • @pineapplz7162
      @pineapplz7162  5 лет назад

      @@jdrawsshit4837 To print the template, play the video full screen, do a screen print/capture on each section and save the images. Scale them to whatever size you need, print them, and glue the paper sheets together into one drawing. The template has a square which tells you what size it needs to be. If you paint any part that slides, do not use latex paint (no latex acrylic paint, no acrylic varnish) because the parts will stick together even when dry for months,and it will wrinkle the paper. Try to use only oil-based, alkyd, laquer, or other solvent paints. You can also build loose fabric or paper covers for the main mechanism, so that you don't need to paint them. You could subsitute SOME of the flat wooden parts with many layers of paper glued together or with the type of card stock that you find in hardcover books, binders, and clipboards. However, the main parts take the full weight of the wings when open and I don't see how they could be substituted with illustration board.
