Per request, more details on how the feather sections from the version 2 video are assembled. First, join a full-size template from printouts (one side only). Blueprints for Paper Wings Version 2

For those interested in doing their own engineering, this is the scale model and the current blueprints for my larger set of paper costume wings. This is just an update on build progress and does not include all parts or dimensions. I cut and glued the paper parts exactly as in the drawing. This build will be the basis of a future tutorial. Plans may be changed during construction.

By request, these are some pictures taken during the construction of the black paper wings. I have included the work in progress of the much larger version not yet built. At this point, I am still working out some of the technical details. After I build the final set, I will put together a tutorial, materials list, drawings, etc.

I'll never get this! I'm trying to make wings like this but of a dragonfly. Have you considered creating instructions that you sell? I'm sure you would sell a lot. It will probably be 30-40 pages, a lot of work, but I believe it will sell! I would buy in a heartbeat.

All your videos are great and very detailed and these wings are awesome but I was wondering instead of over the shoulders pulley system can this be made with the pulleys pulled from the bottom behind the back? I bought some cheap ones from Party City that have a from the back pulley system. I like the look of yours way more but I think I’d want a from the back pulley system.
Likely not comfortably. With an 8-foot (2.4m) wingspan, the strings are pulled 12 inches (30cm) to move the lifters half that distance (using a travelling pulley arrangement to make it easier). Reaching back is an awkward motion with less range, compared to pulling straight down from the shoulders. They feel heavier than you'd think. With a separate harness to take the weight, it may be possible to route thin tubing behind the back and under the arms instead -- copper water pipe or bicycle brake cable casing, for example. I don't know if the strings would retract freely with the extra bends, but placing small weights at the wingtips helps.

Well, using a single layer of posterboard, the MAXIMUM practical width is about 8 feet (244cm) fully extended. The sizes of the spars and wooden arms in the various pictures of the larger set are the bare minimums needed to support the weight at that size, so they do flex a little. If you can source it, consider using ultra-thin corrugated cardboard for all or most of the sections, instead; the build would be easier. Double up the wooden arms and spars, if a bulkier look is OK. The pulley diameter is sufficient, but it could be made wider to increase leverage. Perhaps a more important consideration is that wings which are 8 feet wide across the top when open are 4ft (122cm) wide at the bottom when closed.
