    I've got both this antenna and a Hoxin 250 which is affectively a copy of the Comet CHA250B. Very different antennas, the Hoxin doesn't need an ATU but the Moonraker definitely does. The Moonraker is a bit more compact for transporting, I use to keep it in the car for portable work attached to a tow ball mount and use the Hoxin at home. Performance wise, both antennas need a good ground to perform better. I've found for me having them mounted about 6-8ft with raised radials seems to be the best option but increases the need for a bigger garden!! Both are ideal for small gardens.

    nice that it transmits, i first thought its for listening

    The performance looks similar to that of my Comet CHA-250B vertical vs my W3EDP end-fed wire, but the Comet is matched for transmit as well as for receive without a tuner, while the W3EDP wire always requires a tuner.

    Base assembly resembles a New-Tronics Hustler vertical minus the radials. Looks like a good antenna for restricted space.
    RG-58 coax is very lossy at 28 MHz. 100 feet will cost you half of the signal. Better to use LMR or at least RG-8 coax.

    Have had mine up and running for a couple of weeks now and it tunes up nicely on most bands using the tuner on my newly acquired second hand Yaesu 450D . Very low noise level on most bands but 17 meters is shockingly noisy (local QRM ?) Best of all it drags in stations from all over Europe (including East Europe) and North America in what are otherwise mediocre conditions . I have it mounted on 14 feet of aluminium pole which is ground spiked into the ground (welded myself !). so it stands above my single story garage with no radials. As a new Foundation licence holder I have nothing to compare it to but the receive sounds excellent (sometimes like next door) but have yet to make a contact - 10 watts does not work well against stronger stations in mediocre conditions. For not a lot of money it works well and is providing me with a decent experience as I learn the ropes. I will start putting out my own calls soon to see where it will get me. Would I recommend it ? Absolutely , although I am sure there are better (more expensive) solutions. Good job Moonraker.

    It used the very well know 'wide band matching transformer' that is known also as a 3db attenuator.

    Thanks for video, very helpful to me as a newbie SWL. I have bought this antenna and it seems to work OK. I am a bit worried as to the strength of the antenna, I live near the coast about three miles from Dungeness in Kent and it can get pretty windy here. I live in a bungalow and the bottom of the antenna is just above the roof line. I did see somewhere that it could be shortened??. For SWL would a lower position a bit out of the wind be too detrimental to performance. Thanks again.

    radials would help lot with this antenna, in fact I am sure I seen it need to be ground mounted and/or ground radials, so that put me off buying one for that reason...now I can used elevated radials...I may make a 9:1 unun and test a homebrew version

    Do you have any tip to receive sstv on 80 / 40 m in europe?

      Download and install an app called Robot 36 on your phone. When you hear SSTV, open up the app, put the phone near the radio, and watch the pictures. This also works well on 145.800, FM, when the ISS is sending pictures.

    Quite an ask to cover all that frequency, but it looks tidy and reminds me of a Silver Rod! I would have liked to see what the SWR is across the frequencies, but you may have done that as I got disturbed by the wife with shopping. I'll watch it again later. If you did that forgive me, I should have paid more attention.

      I have done an SWR plot using my VNA but not shown in video because this particular version is marketed as an RX antenna. Altho, it is exactly the same as the one advertised for TX. An ATU is needed for TX.

    It looks to me to be a knock off of the comet ch 250 b. If your using it to receive why would you need the matching box. It wouldn’t make that much of a difference except on transmit. I have the comet version ch 250b. It’s not a beam but I’m not sorry I bought it. I worked plenty of DX and stateside domestic stations.

      I’m not entirely sure, but it’s extremely frustrating! Most likely it’s either VDSL, solar panels, LED lights or a noisy PSU from my neighbours. It really sucks sometimes.

      The internet is only imaginary brain patterns in your own sub-conscience. No need to prove me wrong as I don't really exist... Honestly, next you will be telling me there is a big man in the sky who created everything in a week... LOL

    • @DivergentDroid
      @DivergentDroid 4 года назад

      @@drubug Did you know the Ionosphere was not "invented" until Marconi made his first transatlantic radio message? It's True. They had to come up with a way to explain how radio waves curved around a sphere because there is no way radio waves which travel line of sight could travel such distances around a ball. Marconi proved Earth is Flat. No imaginary sky man needed it's strictly science. Never in the history of Radio has the idea of a layer of atmosphere been recreated in a test lab to prove the theory that radio waves can bounce off of it. You put those same gasses at the same densities in a lab experiment and prove that to me or you have nothing. You simply choose to believe what was drilled into you.
