    Maybe you could do a follow-up video with a SWR sweep over various frequencies?

    • @TechMindsOfficial
      @TechMindsOfficial  3 года назад +9

      Check the video description, I posted a link to a VNA sweep :) 👌

    • @chrisplunkett2814
      @chrisplunkett2814 3 года назад +4

      It's a receive only antenna,so no way of measuring SWR as you'd need to transmit through it to get these figures.

    • @dustinmcdermont699
      @dustinmcdermont699 3 года назад +5

      @@chrisplunkett2814 that's not true, your nano VNA measures the resonant frequency of the antenna with a very low transmission of signal. The resonant frequency is the frequency at which an antenna receives or transmits, it doesn't matter. Also the tiny signal the nano vna puts out is in the milliwatts and wont blow a recieve only antenna.

    • @samuellourenco1050
      @samuellourenco1050 Год назад +1

      No real need for an SWR measurement, as this is just for receiving.

    • @sammiller6631
      @sammiller6631 2 месяца назад

      @@dustinmcdermont699 The nano vna is temperamental as hell. Even holding it differently will cause nanovna measurements to flake out. You have to calibrate a nano vna _every_ time you want a measurement, unlike a more robust analyzer like a RigExpert stick.

    Discone antennas have very interesting wide band properties, this seems like a nice bit of kit, I use a Diamond discone, although a bit larger than the one profiled here, cheers, n yr videos are outstanding

      wide band...but no gain! I too own a Diamond discone, only useful for close communications (and more remote air com). Because I'm more interested in the 135-470 band and love in the deep country (few local transmissions), I built a log periodic antenna tailored for this band. Dramatic results (6-8 db gain / discone). Only weakness : somewhat directive.

    • @sammiller6631

    I have been using one of these discone antennae for several years on the rear of my motorcycle for many tens of thousands of kilometres. During assembly l used LOCKTITE on all threaded parts and not one has come loose.
    I also use LOCKTITE on my fixed position antenna because l live at 8,000 feet and the wind can shake threaded components loose.
    Only one component has failed on the discone antenna and that was one of the "rubber duckie" antennae, and l don't know what the specification is. The manufacturers didn't respond to text enquiries, despite several attempts.

    As an Rx only antenna one could possibly use it as QRP at less than 5watts. It would be worth a try. I have something along the same path that was made by Niljohn in the States some 20 years ago( they have been since acquired by a company that manufactures military multiband antennas) and it covers a wide range between 2meters all the way up to 800 MHz and can handle up to 50 watts. It consists of three "verticals" of different lengths set at 120° apart from each other and at about 30° off of the vertical axis. It is designed for mobile use although a bit crazy looking for the average ham antenna.

    • @christopherwilliams9936
      @christopherwilliams9936 3 года назад +2

      Subgunman, I too have the Niljon Classic. It's mounted on the bonnet of my Jeep. It provides very good low earth orbit FM repeater satellite coverage as well as good terrestrial operations from the mobile. I just acquired its big brother the Niljon Ultra which sports six "verticals" of varied lengths set 60 degrees apart and also 30 degrees off the vertical axis. I bought the home station version with the required groundplane elements. It has a nearly flat SWR from 88 MHz continuously through 6 GHz. I plan to use it on the various ham microwave bands in addition to the usual 2m, 133cm, 70cm, 33cm and 23cm bands. 73 de W6NOB

    I have one of these Antennas. I was not happy with the coax so I changed it to RG mini XX all so wanted it longer but with out a join.to get to the in side plug it has to be warmed up ware the plastic fits in to the metal of the Antenna but remove the base and the top of the Antenna be careful when warming up the Antenna don't get to hot because the plastic tube will go floppy it would be easier if some heats it and another pulling it until it comes apart.i fitted 20-meters on mine RG mini 8 xx.when fitting the tube back in the metal Antenna gust use some Epoxy but only on the last 10mm of the tube.one thing if you got a watch on take it off because the magnet will kill your watch.i bought 15-inch of plastic tube because I wanted it a bit higher from the base.it won't ever go on a car because its would or mite come off.the RG 8 mini XX has made a difference .well worth doing.happy scanning

No antenna in the world is capable of covering 25 to 2000mhz as it's totally impossible. I thought it was very poor for the price and found a slim jim cut for around 200mhz and a 3rd of the price massively out performed this discone.

    Looks like an all around winner. Is it just a scanner antenna? Can't you transmit with it as well?
    I heard today that the U.K. was locked down, but I didn't know there was no air travel, right now! Hows that lock down working for everyone? Has the China-virus disappeared yet?

      There is lots of air travel in the UK. Check ADSB Exchange.

      @@PureAwareness76 Why would the OP want to transmit from a discone? It's no better than a stubby rubber duck antenna. They should "waky waky" their antenna knowledge.

    I can't see any advantage at all in combining a very poor discone , 4 rubber duckies rather than a top disk of the usual 8 (or more) rods, with a few vertical elements. It's a complete shambles of a thing. Not sure where they plucked 25Mhz from, but it's a marketing ploy. Advertising gurus making silk purses from sows ears. Try a wire coat-hanger, straightened out, cut in the centre and connected to the same length of co-ax. Not joking.

    Lololol.That's a stupid gimmick antenna. Throwing a random length of wire on the floor is equally as good as that thing.
