the thing that stands out about him to me, at the risk of comparing him to Tatis or even Profar, is how polished he is with his approach and how disciplined he is with what he swings at and what he spits on. Tatis WAS NOT refined at this age. Lets be clear, Tatis was a one-ff inasmuch as he made a lot of contact for someone who struck out a lot and he had an "it-factor" no other player had because he was doing things we had never seen done before. All that said, what makes Merrill special, is his discipline and refined approach..and the next-to-nothing flash he plays with. He has swag, dont get me wrong...but he's not interested in entertaining anyone.
You really do get the feeling you're watching a veteran when he's at the plate. That breaking ball he hit OUT against Oakland's closer?...was the moment I remember saying out loud "oh, this m-effer is trying to go to the HoF"..because rookies dont dig in against a closer who throws 103mph, and look for a curveball to hit. But thats EXACTLY what Merrill sat on. 21 yrs old...and he's that tuned in to what is being thrown to him.
