This one performs about where other low-end PCs perform but has the advantage of coming with a terabyte of storage that can be expanded. It also has the ability to expand its memory capacity to 8 gigabytes for better multi-tasking. It also features a DVD reader / burner.
It will very adequately run Office applications like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. It's also a capable web browsing machine and will do well with web-based applications like Google docs and others. What it's not good for is high end (or even mid-range) gaming, so an Xbox One or PS4 will deliver much better gaming performance for about the same price.
The case is large compared to mini-PCs but much smaller as compared to more powerful desktops. This is the type of form factor typically seen as a corporate workstation machine. It's not fanless but relatively quiet. The hard drive on mine is definitely a bit noisier than I've been used to lately given how many machines use solid state disks these days.
In my performance tests it lines up well against other machines running with the same or similar processors. It suffers a little bit due to its spinning hard drive, but it's easy enough to swap that drive out for a faster solid state disk. My advice is to go with the slightly faster i3 version which will deliver performance more in line with what one would expect from a desktop workstation.

A cheap mod you could do is, drill a hole on the bottom backside to feed the power cable through so you can stick the power brick in the empty space of the case.

Very under powered but an excellent choice for a low profile home media server.
The power cord can easily be tucked into the bottom and the two drive bays are easy to upgrade with SSDs. The 1TB samsung ssd is at Best Buy in store for around $220. Cloning to SSD is unbelievably fast and easy now.

I bought a Dell optiplex 960 Sff on ebay. It had a core 2 quad and 8 GB of RAM. It was only $40. Then I went and bought a 750 ti for $105. Now I can play all the triple a games at medium settings at 40-50 fps. Much better value than this in my opinion.
I love how cheap you can get still-capable and greatly upgradable old PCs now, some great deals out there going used.
Excellent review Lon! The only problem I've ever had with Dell, and this was back in 2003, was their customer service, which was terrible. But if I got a warranty with this through Amazon, or Microcenter, I don't think I'd have too many problems. It doesn't look like this Dell has a lot of bloatware on it, which is great, because I'm typing this on a Lenovo which is loaded with it.

Underpowered, small PSU, no pcie slot, only 2 sata ports, lots of wasted space in the case... How much does Dell spend to produce this? $150? $200? Not very good value in my opinion. But the video was awesome and very informative. Thanks, Lon!

So glad I got one of these for $280 before they replaced the lga 1150 g3220 with a mobile processor. Seems silly to put a 5 watt part in a desktop case. Nice video but I cant stand desktop computers with these chips in them. They only help the problem of people walking into bestbuy to replace a 6 year old pc only to walk out with something slower than what they already had.

I bought this with Celeron cpu. I use it only to stream video. I noticed it often stuttered when playing videos. I had to slow RUclips to 480p. A friend of mine has Celeron powered laptop. He noticed the same thing. It was useless for playing movie etc. I did a reset and made sure all bloat ware was removed. Now it works ok but I guess it's right on the edge. I tried several browsers. chrome would only play yt at 720, edge plays 1080p ok so now I only use edge. I think chrome has some background processes running.
Mine came with 8 GB of RAM instead of 4 GB of RAM. It's the 2016 model with Windows 10.
EDIT: Mine also was configured with the full-size desktop-grade 7200 RPM 1TB HDD. I'm sure that another higher-end PC in the Dell family would have a larger motherboard with the expansion slots. Probably in this same basic case design, maybe with a different front plate/cover.

Dis you measure power consumption? Important for a home server. I guess it should be in the 10-15 watt range during idle.

Hey Lon -- Is this a mini PC for the Russian market? Given the size and lack of expandabliity I'm surprised you didn't blow a vacuum tube during testing. That VGA port sure makes this a must have for those with a large tube monitor. Do you think this will make your top ten best devices list for 2016? Ten years ago this would have been a "must-have." Today, Dell is just trying to liquidate some old cases at $350 U.S. a pop.

It depends on the processor. The Celeron and Pentium models are potato for the most part. i3 or higher is really good. The Pentium should work OK for web browsing but nothing more.
I have pentium. I only use it for nomal stuff like RUclips, research, and movies. No gaming though. So Is that good?

I'm looking for an Xbox one equivalent gaming pc, if not a little less. I'm not good with building, and was wondering if there is a prebuilt pc that is cheap and will give ok-good performance on newer games on low settings?
I know I'm not Lon, but a friend of mine purchased an iBuyPower PC for around $400 and loves it, it can handle almost any game that you can throw at it. I'd look into those if I were you.

The Lenovo IdeaCentre 300S is a better deal, IMO. It has a similar form factor and 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive, but a full quad-core i5 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, 802.11ac WiFi, and USB 3.0 connectivity. It's listed at $429.99 here, but I picked it up on sale at $399.99 to upgrade my parents' desktop that was powered by an AMD Athlon X2 CPU and 2 GB of RAM. I've been really impressed with its performance, along with the fact that it came with surprisingly little bloatware.

Minecraft in plain biome: 67 fps
Csgo: Can't run
Geometry dash on jawbreaker bass drop: 40 fps
Blackshot on lost temple: 30 fps
Robocraft: 20 fps in mid battle.
