I have an etron technik (basic model) and the auto regen coasts if there are no obstructions in front, but resend if approaching other cars etc. Having driven other evs at first I thought it was pointless until I realised this. Now I prefer and the thinking behind it is that it’s always more efficient to coast if possible than regen. Great cars that are slated by many who have not even sat in one as you say.
After 5 years driving BEV and PHEV I go for low regen as the brake pedal provides regen and brake lights. The problem with regen as standard is unwanted regen reduces efficiency. Easier to drive, Yes, more efficient, No.
Yeah this is why I set mine to coast but use the flappy paddles to regen brake.
@@Lewis_Standing I used to use the paddles but have gone back to the brake pedal. Just as much regen as long as you don't brake too hard and the car behind knows you are braking.
In our Kona regen will activate brake lights when decelerating. For it not to would be dangerous?
@@stulop My MG5 does in level 3 but it defaults to level 2. My Outlander doesn’t in any of it’s 5 levels.
I completely agree with you that vehicle charge ports should be on the front. It is so much easier to charge. I heard it mooted on another RUclips EV channel that some don't site them on the front because, if you have a front-end collision, you wouldn't be able to charge. If the vehicle is that badly damaged, the least of your worries would be charging up. It's unlikely now we'll ever get charge port siting standardised.
Interesting theory but it falls down quite quickly when a decent shunt is going to potentially kill the charge port no matter where it’s sited. As you say, a badly damaged vehicle shouldn’t be charging anyway!
@@ModernHeroes I rather think that the typical e-tron driver does not have a garage much longer than 5 meters and people wearing a suit will not enjoy trying to operate their home charging cable in the narrow space in the front…
@@ModernHeroes It's also considered bad in dirty weather like here in the Nordics.
We have a Kona EV and I prefer the front charging port and I am Swedish, so I disagree with those people.
More chance of a front charge port freezing up in snowy conditions.
Great review, very honest and informative. I’m also with onto and am coming to the end of my 1st month with them(Zoe r135 gt line). I am giving the car back next week to take a break over winter hopefully to restart my journey next spring. I am a bit concerned with the lack of available cars in my area atm so I’m hoping this will improve over the next few months so I can get back to driving an EV as I have really enjoyed my experience so far.
Superb review I would have one ! Regen would be a pain!…. The good thing you could always chop the motor in and give us other reviews so I’ll still be sticking with your reviews and rants keep up the good work
About regen: having tried out all the modes (now at 15k km) the e-tron in my opinion has been designed to be driven with the predictive regen. So its a pity you dont seemt to have the radar which is a prerequisite. With predictive regen the car really handles most of your breaking (curves, crossings, vehicles in front, etc) so you have to use the breaking pedal mainly to stop at the red lights. Otherwise just use the accelerator or let the car cruise. This results in a very relaxing and economical drive.
That’s very interesting - is that what the “automatic” regen setting in the menu is supposed to do but it’s massively hindered by the lack of radar in this model? 🧐
@@ModernHeroes I think you are missing the point on regen. IMO the car is designed to be as easy to to move from ICE to EV as possible and as such, does not have one pedal driving which is a little alien to to an ICE driver. In normal driving, with regen set to automatic (which stays fixed on restart unless you change it), the the car will coast when your foot is off the pedal, when you brake, the motor brakes the car and gives you regen. Only when you hard brake/emergency stop do the actual brakes brake the car. I drive mine in the auto regen mode all the time and the car regens all the time. You don't need the automatic cruise for that (I don't think) but auto cruise does brake the car, using the motors (creating regen) if it deems it necessary either by radar (traffic in front is slower) or by the navigation (if you are using navigation and the route you are on, shows a forthcoming bend, roundabout etc). The only thing it doesn't recognise are traffic lights. You only get 405 hp from the boost, which is selectable either by the gear change lever or driving modes. If you are using Efficiency or Comfort, you only have just over 300+hp unless you select sport in one way or another (gear lever or drive mode).
@@philhartley7564 I agree mostly but the „automatic regen mode“ is explicitly described in the manual to regen predictivey with nav and cars in front, so I assume this mode is of lesser value if you don‘t have the radar. I wonder why they even sell e-trons without a radar…
@@evbrandy1357 I'd agree and mine automatically stays in auto regen all the time (I rarely use the paddles), whether I am using predictive navigation, or not. Personally I think it is just as beneficial with adaptive cruise or not, you see it happening when you brake, the only difference with adaptive is that the car brakes itself (except at red traffic lights if there is nobody in front of you, then it will just carry on unless you brake!) The car regenerates when braking (as shown on the virtual cockpit display where the regen level is shown) and modulation of the braking is as easy (if not easier) than one pedal driving for me. Having never driven a one pedal system and having come from an ICE vehicle (and driving them as well, occasionally) the audi system works fine for me as braking comes naturally, only with that braking comes regen. As I say, only hard/emergency braking, applies the actually brakes. I remain convinced that Audi do it this way to make the transition, for ICE drivers, as normal as possible.
Thanks for another great video. Looks great car
Well done. Can you tell the difference in window tinting compared to MG ZS EV? Is it much more comfortable in the sun? Cheers.
Yes, it’s definitely much more bearable in the sun, notice it much cooler when parked in direct sunlight for a while too.
I have gone from a front charging Zoe to a OSR side charging Ioniq 5! I do miss front charging capability.
Hi, could you tell me if you have heard of a Granny cable, if so, can I use this on my outside electric point from my house? Many thanks!
Granny charger is the term often used to describe a 3-pin to type 2 (or 1) charging cable, designed for charging an EV from a normal 13A household socket. You can use one but beware that the 3 pin plug isn’t best suited to drawing high current for long periods of time. These typically operate at 10A for hours and hours - in older installations or ones with poor quality sockets there can be issues with heat. I’ve never had issues with them, but be careful and as always, consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure.
Good update, keep flipping as per Onto offers and try the new Citroen C4?
Won’t be rushing to change into the next one, don’t think one month is really enough to get a proper feel for it.
At 15:00 the position of the charge port seems to be chosen to be convenient for home charging. However for charging while parallel parked in a street the charging cable would have to stretch across the bonnet 😱. At that Instavolt charger the cable going across to the driver's side looks awkward. It seems like if you tried reversing in the cable would be on the same side as the port but too short to reach with such a long vehicle. 🤔
Yeah you’re right, it definitely wouldn’t reach reversing in. There’s a Type 2 socket on the passenger side, but CCS is only on the driver side.
Ionity Gretna chargers are perfectly placed, Ionity Milton Keynes is not, you do have to park in awkward angles sometimes, but there are many instavolts where the part holding the cable swivels, so that it can be at 90 degrees and, therefore. a little easier. I always put a microfibre cloth between the cable and bodywork of the car (where it touches) because the cables do heat up and they can vibrate.
@@philhartley7564 good idea sticking a cloth there, I’ll put one in the car for this very purpose shortly. Those IONITY chargers at Gretna are really awkward for front loading cars like my old MG!
It's an expensive optional item. It's mad some standard features in cheap cars are still options on German cars (and Jag's).
I’ve really got no problem with you trying this Audi out; am I odd? - although it is a pity you couldn’t have done a back-to-back test against with the MG3 courtesy car a few months ago…
Believe it or not but new Megane has moved charging port to the side like the etron , ps what ac charging does it have and does it have the second port on the otherside
Just the standard 11kW AC I believe, as I say it doesn't appear to have any options over and above the standard Black Edition spec. 22kW is an option.
it does have the second AC port on the other side though. They've missed a massive usability trick by not putting CCS on both sides.
Doesn’t feel fast you said, have you found sport mode? Put suspension in dynamic then pull back on drive selector twice to get S on left side of dash, then floor it. You’ll believe 0-60 in 5.5 seconds
😂 I thought that might be the case. Leave it with me 👀
Camera door mirrors you say? Goodness me, I remember when air conditioning and alloy wheels were such special optional extras you were able to brag that you had them!! 😅😆
I was amazed when the Honda E demonstrated the camera wing mirrors. I really think it's the way forward...
@@mediocrefunkybeat Agreed 👍
All those charger networks, all of them, apart from the one you forgot to mention is the only one available in my home town 🤣😂🤣
Does complementary charging come as standard with the car?
Yes, it’s supplied with 3 charge cards (BP, InstaVolt and Shell) as standard.
Hope you enjoy the top end before coming back to normality.
What is the Onto monthly subscription costs, that never seems to be documented anywhere.
Not sure why people seem to think it’s some great secret, it’s very clearly stated on their website. This car is £1299/month.
Maybe try a Korean EV for your next car? Our Soul EV has 4 regen levels (inc coasting) which are nailed on. Full auto regen (radar/traffic/GPS) which you can set independently with any of the regen levels (also nailed on). No options list... it has it all as standard... HUD (admittedly the poor mans version), heat pump, adaptive cruise control, LKA, blind spot warning and full safety suite, full leather, 7 years warranty inc free DATA usage... all at less than half the cost of the e-Tron and with real buttons for most functions (inc aircon). 2.9miles/kwhr would be disappointing for a rainy winters day! The e-Tron camera mirrors are known to be troublesome, grainy at night, bad in the wet, the screens are badly positioned (reflections) and not intuitive to use. The Audi Q4 e-Tron has gone back to real buttons for climate (even has ye-old manual adjustment on the drivers seat too), but the Skoda Enyaq has a better quality interior. We've previously had VAG cars for several years (and the odd Mercedes), but now see no reason to look elsewhere than Korea, they seem to have EV's nailed. On the positive side, great video, really enjoying your honest experience (hope the 'This car is provided by Onto' sticker is prominent for all to see)!
Does this Audi now have indicators
Yeah but I don’t need to use them right? 🧐
@@ModernHeroes good man
Adaptive cruise and all round cameras are options, even on black edition :(, typical German car
After telling us lots about this car one thing seems missing from this review the cost to rent it or have I just missed it
£1299/mo, as advertised on the Onto website, it’s no great secret.
@@ModernHeroes Huh. You could buy a new car each year and just toss the one year old one.
Roll on hydrogen
@@nigelford936 eh? If hydrogen somehow becomes a thing, do you really believe a range topping hydrogen powered Audi will be cheaper? 🤦♂️
It will certainly be a lot more convenient like they used to say evs is like putting the cart before the horse
Thanks for these down-to-earth first impressions. You're absolutely de-snobbing the (cliché) Audi driver world by a magnitude. Now is this e-tron the EV of your desire or was it something like a "nice package, nice price" decision ?
A couple of months ago e-tron was at the pinnacle of charging speed which alleviated the downside of high consumption when driving at higher speed. Well, the throne of king-of-charging is lost to the Ioniq 5 I guess but charging is still fast. Having the e-tron sipping on a 50kW charger is probably a must when you want to have your burger and chips on the side. The e-tron quickly became famous for its low cabin noise level even at higher speeds. Speaking of those higher speeds, I reckon you stay with the speed limit in the UK - more or less - and thus the consumption will be moderate (instead of the alleged 35kWh -> 40kWh when going something like 160km/h or so). Charge ports: nothing but front side ports like Zoe, Kona, Niro, Soul and MG seems quite inconvenient to me. I wonder what Audi prevented them from coming up with a user friendly solution, perhaps it's the fossil heritage and the lack of space due to the stuff that crams the front of a standard Audi SUV. Even if the Audi was within my budget, it would definitely not fit inside my garage, so I can always blame it on this. Best wishes and pleasant rides all the time.
I can’t say it’s the car of my dreams or that I’ve always wanted one but it’s very interesting to experience it. It was available for near immediate delivery and it’s extremely unlikely I’d commit myself to a longer lease or purchase a car like this (unlike the rest of Onto’s available cars) so I thought it was worth a go!
Guy sticking his head out his front door to wonder why you're talking to your car during the intro...
The e Tron regen is nowhere near as strong as the e niro, as you say at first I found I was hurtling towards traffic expecting it to slow faster, fine now i am used to it and the rest of the drive is great, I use it in comfort mode mainly, but then again I am a boring old fart. Yes the basic model only has basic cruise control as with all things Audi it is an add on 😀
Didn't you realise that the car has 2 x charge ports ?? One on each side of the car to prevent unnecessary dragging of cables across the car !
Only for AC charging - there’s only one CCS port.
Shock? I need therapy! Well done you deserve it. #bringbacktheknobs
Hmmm... Sensible pill swallowed and have decided the cost of this fine steed is not suited to me.... One can continue dreaming though, (and continue in their sub £1000 ICE ...) 😂
Multi regen cars can be dangerous. Should be able to be fixed
What do you mean with „multi-regen“?
Why is called a black edition? It’s king red!
😂. Certainly is. Black Edition refers to the black styling elements - grill, roof rails etc that are normally silver.
@@ModernHeroes Is there a hot pink edition? In which case, sign me the fuck up.
@@ModernHeroes My Toyota from 2000 has that.
@@ModernHeroes I was only joking. It looks great.
Bit shocked you’ve gone to the dark side!
Dark? It’s Red AF 😉
@@ModernHeroes Have you found the indicators yet? 😉🤪
@@garalun3978 the what? 😉
Better cars from Onto for what you need. Etron too big and expensive. I'd have Citroen e-C4.
There are cheaper cars, no doubt about it. 🤷♂️
so cos youve rented this now - i see the scary shirts have disappeared :D DISAPOINT
They haven’t gone far don’t worry - I was on my way to pick up a toolbox (part 2 video coming soon 😂) so thought a t-shirt was a safer choice.
I hear the passenger asking are we going to McDonalds for ice cream. hehehe
But We need to find out do you often drive with a toy in the car with a seat belt on. I am sure you can get help for that
Is it that spending so much on this car you have lost your mind alittle. and we can call the men in white coats.
The worse things to have at a stop Burger king the smallest most expensive burgers cooked in a microwave. and Greggs pies with nothing in them and greasy.
I have not heard of many on the list. there is no Scottish chargers really since Charge Place Scotland is so 98 per cent of all chargers in Scotland.
It is strange that some of the chargers listed are what can be seem at 35p or higher companies. no pod point (aldi 25p) or Tesco ( some free) being offered. you have fastned which only has 6 charger sites all in the northeast and is 39p a unit
There are a growing number of InstaVolt and Osprey chargers in Scotland, it is extremely difficult for them to gain traction when competing against a subsidised network though. The long list that is included with the Shell card represents networks that are willing to open their network to other payment platforms - you’ll find many of them in other aggregator platforms like Octopus Electric Juice - if firms like PodPoint don’t want to be part of that then that’s on them. It’s unreasonable to expect Onto to provide charging cards for every network you can think of.
When the temperature drops , the range will plummet , speed of charging would need to be 150 kw dc average to make up for the poor range
not so in practice, plummet is too strong a word, maybe 10% loss but that would apply to all EV's
Still can’t see where 80000 has gone on , battery not that big . Audi making a very large profit on this car . If it can’t go a premium distance ie 300 miles real world it’s not premium
is it not almost the cost of 2 tesla cars. you only seem to pay for the name. and you really don't get true value
it has the same things as you can get on a 20k car.
