    Really enjoyed that Stephen, even the bit with Rory in it, well done! I've longed for a campervan for years... I can yours isn't a full conversion - do you do the extra work to it yourself - the insulation and the joinery?

      I’m flattered you think the joinery work was good enough to have paid for!! 🤣🤣
      Did it all myself with no experience other than a trial and error attitude. There were a lot of errors along the way 🤣

    I spend a lot of time on the road, perhaps 1/4 of my time, 60000km this past year. Getting a van would have cost so much more than my hybrid. That said, I’ve tried to incorporate some of what you demonstrate - I make the trips worth more than work. I schedule time for exploring even if it’s just a run on a new path. I’ve found some great trails and fabulous side roads. It’s not a van but a mindset of finding joy or opportunities for joy.
    I admire your approach and I hope I emulate it a tiny bit.
    Thanks for this.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Год назад +1

      Oh wow that’s a lot of distance, I only do about 22000km in a year. Helps that when I’m not out, I mostly work from home.
      Yeah absolutely right it is a bit of a mindset. I’ve kinda chosen to earn less too, but enjoy my time more. The nature of my work is that I could squeeze in probably 3x more work if I just was focused on earning

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Год назад +3

      Interesting question Jim, so I thought I’d go add it up as the perception can be very different from reality.
      In the last 6 months I’ve been away from home (on these kinds of trip) 23 nights out of 365. So I’m home 94% of the time.
      On average I’m only away 1 night every 2 weeks although it’s really less as half of those days were over 2 trips to Lake District and Scotland. So weeks can go past and I’m not away.
      I schedule my time and take time off to make sure I spend quality time with Louise so it’s all good 🙂
      I just don’t share all that time online

    • @jimgiraffe5253
      @jimgiraffe5253 Год назад +2

      @@StephenJReid interesting to get such an honest answer. you make it seem like you are never home and live in your van most of the time.
      How many youngsters are gonna see these vids and think that this is the way to live ..as a homeless digital nomad in a ford transit and pooping in a bucket.
      Videos can be very deceptive , not that i am saying you are but the vids as i say present something that isnt reality, if you know what i mean.

    • @Dreyno

      Don’t know why but “homeless digital nomad” makes me think of a blockily animated 1980s video game featuring a hobo.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Год назад

      @@jimgiraffe5253 Haha there are worse things “youngsters” (to me that’s anyone under 25) could be doing.
      I actually think the van life trend has been fantastic at promoting more local tourism and maybe even encouraging people to take pride in their own country more.
      For a long time it seemed that the only acceptable way to “properly” travel had to involve a plane.
      The problem is, the alternative to “making it seem like I’m never home” would be to post loads of boring videos that no one would watch of me sitting for hours editing in front of a computer.
      Videos by their nature are a form of deception and it can be benevolent or malevolent. To tell a story you have to edit, you can’t show everything.
      And you’re right, it’s very easy to tell a harmful story with video. See it all the time online.
      This 15min video was edited down from about 1hour of footage which was shot over about 24hours. So actually only 1% of the entire trip made it into the video.
      Makes you think.
