  • In this video I show off my new hand made texture roller. Made from a piece of 1.5" pic pipe and a Dremel. Excited to share it with you. This is a prelude to next week's video where I utilize this tool to make an awesome, huge project.

    that's the idea I was looking for! Thanks!
    There are no Texture Rollers in my area to buy so I gotta make my own.

    I recently finished a diy cobblestone roller. I used some above/below ground pvc electrical conduit- the walls are a bit thicker than plumbing pvc. It was very labor intensive to carve out all the cobblestones with a rotary tool but the result is worth it because it should last pretty much forever!

    To apply more pressure, evenly, find rolling pins, even at the dollar store, and get pvc that will fit around it. Doesn't have to even fit perfectly, just chip board as shims until it fits then expoxy it together.

    Fill the roller with small gravel and glue or cement for more weight or fishing lead ... instead of gravel ...

    For doing those rollers the deeper you go, the better and the thinner the raised areas are the better. It cuts into the foam much easier when the raised areas are as thin as possible just like this one! I'm doing a larger brick one next, thinking maybe alike to the style of the stonework at Machu Pichu.

    Finished boring out my roller last night. I ended up using black PVC since it was the only type I could find locally. My bricks aren't nearly as small as yours, but man, it works fantastically! Any other ideas for designs aside from the brick?

    • @brokenterrain
      @brokenterrain  3 года назад +2

      Right now just different brick patterns. However I've seen some decorative rollers used for clay. Maybe compromise and do some Celtic knots for Dwarven and vines and filigree for elven. I'll have to give it a try.

    • @elchucko7
      @elchucko7 3 года назад +2

      @@brokenterrain The Celtic knots would be phenomenal. My rotary tool isn't a Dremol, it's an off brand and awkward to hold. Like you mentioned in the video, it's brutal on the hands. Filigree... hmmmm...

    Thanks for the ideal. I'm just getting started so I'm always looking for tips. But before I do this, I think I'm going to try an idea I had. I'm going to use construction glue and coat the PVC, then roll it in pea gravel. Another ideal I had was to use some QuickCrete, add pea gravel and cast rollers. I've even though about buying a paver with exposed aggregate and sandwhicking the foam between the two pavers.
    I'm really new at this and so far, I'm only in the planning stages. What do you think?

    • @brokenterrain
      @brokenterrain  Год назад +1

      That will work well. It will create a great texture roller. Not sure about casting one. Let me know how it turns out.

    • @brokenterrain

      I'm thinking a piece of wooden Dowling the size of the pvc you used should work.

  • @TioMostFrio

    I wonder if this would work with either a rolling pin in the middle of this pipe or carving out of a rolling pin to start. It would probably give you better even pressure and be less stress on your joints. Would love to hear your thoughts

    • @brokenterrain
      @brokenterrain  2 года назад

      100 percent with you on this. I think threading a pipe through it would help a lot. Making one from a rolling pin to start with is an interesting idea. 🤔 Might be a pain to carve though.

    • @joshuapreusser2265
      @joshuapreusser2265 2 года назад

      @@brokenterrain Maybe even go a step further and turn it into a slip roll or roller press like machine so the pressure could be created/controlled with a pair (or two) of bolts or threaded rods?
      Might be able to get away with something as simple as either galvanized or black steel pipe acting as axles for the pvc pipe ...and perhaps bolted to another axle/pvc pipe to make a pair of rollers to feed the foam through. Lots of ways to tinker around with this idea......
      Just thinking that depending on the amount of pressure needed a rolling pin may not suffice (have seen the handles on cheap rolling pins bend before) and if the down pressure can be created by something other that muscle alone all the better..... even being able to get some leverage with a shape like a (super-strong) paint roller or leather roller would probably help.
