    Maybe you've seen the video out there on RUclips of Derek Trucks playing with the Allman Brothers for a song back when he was 13 years old. Dickie was guiding him and giving him the limelight in that event 20+ years ago, and now Derek returns the favor. A nice thing to do for a guy who's had some tougher times lately. Welcome back, Dickey. You were a big part of making the Allmans one of the all time greats. And thank you Derek for giving him the stage on this night. A class act.

      I know dickey's always been um, a "difficult" guy, but I saw the Allman Bros when Derek first joined on a fulltime basis, I think he was about 19, and he had the chops but maybe not the stage presence and I specifically recall Derek being very paternal and protective towards Derek.

If you have written one that approaches Elizabeth Reed, then I will have respect for your comment. That being said, Dickey Betts has entered the privileged realm of TONE, one day kids you will know what that means. Until then practice, practice, practice.

    • @jimlabos
      @jimlabos 3 года назад +3

      Not the only great piece of music he wrote. Elizabeth Reed and Jessica are among the greatest guitar instrumentals if not the greatest. People change. People age differently. Peter Green is another one that gets put down for the way he played lately because it didn't compare to his past. What about BB King?
      Many of us are not what we were when we were younger except that we didn't write Blue Sky, memories of Elizabeth Reed, Jessica, Ramblin' Man etc.. We wish we did but we didn't.
      I wish Betts played like he did but he doesn't, and that's sad. Is that his fault? Maybe but that is not the point. The point is he has an amazing musical "LEGACY". He created something that still endures. An amazing talent that showed many of us how beautiful a guitar can play and that guitar instrumentals are still cool!

  • @MrT5mustang

    As a musician... I have to say.. A song that has so many Twins, and stops is not easy to play cold. Also .. Sometimes the monitors can be slightly off causing a delay in the sound on stage as to off stage making you sound to be paying behind the beat. he may have been off of his game but Dickey Betts is and will always be one of the best ever.

    One thing I really like about Tedeschi-Trucks, is that they are real musicians. Real music has various moods and tempos and volumes, it's not always straight ahead and loud. The problem with doing that live is so many rock audiences just don't know what to make of it, they take any quiet section as just winding down between two songs and start a-whoopin and a hollerin. There are times I feel like just yelling STFU SO I CAN HEAR THE MUSIC!

    Dickey deserves respect.What he has done, and his age, and what he contributed to the ABB's songbook.Do you think Hendrix at 70 if he continued is ways, would have sounded like he did at Woodstock? Miles Davis was not the same, give him a pass.The heart is still there.

    I have to say something here. Really? Is there any respect left out there anymore?
    Give him a break won't you! Dicky Betts composed some of the most beautiful pieces of his era some of which were instrumentals that still to this day are of a quality unheard of in the Blues/Rock world (In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed being one). There is history there and the legacy is stunning and awe inspiring. I know when I was young I used to shoot people down very easily but I'm older now and when it looks like someone is not doing too well I try to judge them not from 1 performance but from their life's work.

    This is a piece of music which many ROCK bands would not have strove to perform in the year 1970 circa. In fact, in 1970, much of the music arranged and/or composed by the members of the Allman Brothers Band was unique in the way the two guitarists worked and performed together, constantly, song after song.

    First off, Dickey wrote the song and he's accustomed to leading a band. He starts it off with an improvised intro and he's got his foot on the brakes. You could say that's his prerogative. But listen to the ideas and his beautiful tone throughout. It's clean, stinging and unmistakably Dickey Betts. How many guitar players can you hear a handful of notes and know who they are? I'd say he plays damn well on this version. Dickey has surely had his issues with sobriety. But his playing here is pretty great--he plays with some fire, terrific tone and real invention--on a tune he's played hundreds of times. I won't defend his conduct, particularly since I don't know the facts. But on this night and this tune, he played his ass off.

    • @derhandtrommler
      @derhandtrommler 10 лет назад +1

      Betts embarrasses himself here, The fact that it's his song and he has been playing it since 1969 works against him, not for him. He loses his timing early on and struggles with it throughout. Derek could easily have said " fuck this shit " and mopped the floor with Betts, but being the class act that he is, he shows restraint and taste. My hat's off to Derek, Susan and their band. Betts needs to get sober and practice more if he wants to keep up with people like these.

    I'm not sure what these "qualified critics" here in this thread are expecting, but Betts came up onstage to perform with a band that isn't his own, and yes, he had a few rusty moments, but by the 10:24 mark, EVERYONE was in synch and killing it. I'd much sooner hear a night's worth of today's Dickey Betts than the substandard stuff that often permeates today's music. Betts did a hell of a job onstage that night. With several of the ABB members now gone, let's just be thankful Dickey's still with us.

    Sad to say but we have all seen too many beautiful faces waste away, drugs, death, jail it doesn't matter it's all the same in the end. It took so many of them away. When you hear a song like this, think of how amazing and beautiful that soul was to create this! Let us not criticize or hold contempt towards them like we are anything but better because sadly enough their time is almost up. Soon enough, we keep it up, it'll be the same. Take your best examples of a bad example and learn what you can. That is what will let you shine on a little longer, and not cling on to the reigns of stories and identities lost in the past, be able to live in the future and keep on riding. Best the best that ever have been..

    I had the privilege of being backstage for a ABB show a while back when Haynes, Betts and Woody were in the band. Mr. Betts was visibly drunk the moment he got off the tour bus. At one point in the show, he had the soundman turn off Haynes' microphone. At later shows, he played off-key solos which contributed, no doubt, to the band's frustration. The band called it "tough love" letting him go. It probably kept the rest of them going until today. But he is missed and wish him well.

First, this band does not groove and swing with the same swagger as the Allmans do. With Jaimo and Butch drumming, the band just locks into their jetstream. The drummers here are more groove-oriented, so that may be an issue for Dicky. Also, he may not have been up to par playing wise. He was always such an articulate picker. But the reality - as pointed out elsewhere on this page - is that his bad habits have played havoc with him. There is a YT interview (Dickey Betts Interview) where the man is definitely not too sharp, to say the least. Is he simply playing the fool? Some seem to think so, but I - who has never met the man - don't believe so. Having just read Greg Allmsn's book and what he has to say about Dickey (remember, Betts was kicked out of the ABB for being an unruly bastard), it is like that the residual damage done via drink and drugs is revealing itself in his playing. Still, the man deserves respect; his legacy is a might one.

      It doesn't matter. The band could be going twice as fast and Dickey should be playing the same speed. It's music.

      MrCherryJuice i know the Betts family ..not DICKEY but I have had a twenty plus relationship with his cousin..The family are very quiet, slow speaking people,,many in his family including my own son,are not big talkers, are very slow to respond, very private people. I laughed at the interview so typical..and they are very intelligent people, ..ask them the time of day and it may take 30 seconds to respond..Very interesting how personality traits are so genetic...It amazed me how much he reminded me of his cousin.. .. For GOD"S SAKE the man is seventy-one years old and is tired..when you get up in age drinking or not drinking heavily you aren't the same as when you are twenty. DICKEY deserves respect and is still one of the finest guitar players on the planet.

    Dickie's songs were definitely the money makers. Rambin' Man, Jessica, Blue Sky. They were a much more commercial success than all the other ABB stuff. Midnight Rider is pretty commercially used, but I can't think of any other one that is.

    • @mben-david2064
      @mben-david2064 9 месяцев назад

      Only Rambling Man was a single of all those songs . Betts drank himself out of the band and it was always up to Gregg to keep the band focused and on task,They proved they could do just fine without Dickie,but there wouldn’t have been a band at all without the late Gregory Lenoir Allman.

    I am a HUGE fan of Dickie. I always said that if he would have passed before Duane, soo many more people would be raving about him, his playing and his statis among the ALL TIME GREATS (Just listen to Blue Sky , case closed) !!! Filmore East remains a huge inspiration for me as a player and as a listener of music. I have played this song many,many times on stage. I think he might have had a few too many pops in the green room !

    I find it odd that some people posting here expected this to sound perfect.he gets invited on stage and has to get into playing with people he has not played with before,or hasn't played with in years.they most likely never rehearsed.this it sounded fine for the jam it was,

  • @jimnoble7565
    @jimnoble7565 10 лет назад +4

    I would like anyone disparaging this performance to keep two things in mind:
    1) They likely did not rehearse beforehand AND
    2) The song is about him hooking up with a girl in a graveyard over Elizabeth Reed's grave stone and is a musical representation of the experience. People don't have sex in perfect 4/4 time signature

    • @jojomellon
      @jojomellon 9 лет назад +1

      What a bizarre defense. Not rehearsing has absolutely nothing to do with being able to keep up with the tempo (slowed down already to begin with) of a song you yourself wrote 40 years ago. And 2, the song has nothing to do with having sex with a girl. It was named for it, but it's instrumental. It's about the music. Trying to cover for Dickey's shit playing by making some bizarre excuse that he's trying to make the song sound like he's having sex is absolutely laughable. Why didn't he play it that way when, you know, they recorded it, or played it for the next 30 years? Guess Dickey making the song about sex was a recent decision?????

      Jim Noble is an idiot. It is not about girls, graveyards, or sex. It simply is named for the "Elizabeth Reed Music Hall" in Macon, GA where the ABB played lots of early gigs. If your gonna spout off you oughta know your history Just sayin

      Jim Noble You are correct Jim Noble I AM in fact the idiot, well at least partially so. After posting my ill-advised comment, I did some research and found that I was the ill-informed idiot and discovered that "The Elizabeth Reed Music Hall" was named for the song, NOT the other way around.as I hastily assumed. Maybe I should have verified my assumption BEFORE disparaging you.....LOL.....Mea Culpa sir, as actually yours was the most factual post on here, although it appears that the rumor regarding the sex on the gravestone has never been acknowledged or verified. What IS clear is the title of the song was in reference to said grave and the time Dicky and the rest of the band spent there. My sincere apologies to you although you must admit the playing(and sound quality) of the clip IS less than stellar. However, I would NEVER disparage Dicky Betts as the original ABB was just incredibly gifted and innovative and the interplay between Duane and Dicky incendiary. I was never able to see the original ABB lineup, but did see many of the subsequent line-ups following Duane and Berry's untimely deaths, and one magical night in Atlanta they were simply as close to the original sound of Fillmore East, with Dicky, Warren, and Derek, a month or so before they fired Dicky. I truly think a part of Duane is channeled through Derek, at least this night, as you could close your eyes and almost believe you were in NY at the Fillmore that night so long ago. So instead of just rambling on let me apologize to you for my previous comment and join you/welcome you to the Dicky Betts fan club. An amazing guitarist, singer, and songwriter who along with Duane and the rest of the ABB created a sound that is still fresh and innovatoive more than forty years later.

    After reading Alan Paul's excellent biography of the ABB, this only makes sense that it would happen. Dickey seemed to always have a soft spot for Derek and from the beginning knew he was something special. Derek was pretty much still a kid when all the conflict that set up Dickey's departure/firing from the band was going on, and I don't think that there was ever any baggage between the two of them. If nothing else, it was a honorable move from Derek to invite him to play with him.

    I thought it was a class act for Derek to have him up on stage with him, while it was not a perfect performance, it wasn't that horrible either. A great band will pick up a little slack or someone who is not right in sync with them and make the song flow as if nothing was wrong and that is what I saw here. I enjoyed it. The whole band probably enjoyed it also.

    I've Got the Original Newspaper Article from the Sarasota Herald Tribune ~ Bett's and My Hometown newspaper at that time in 2000 it says the Bett's has been put on leave for the summer that fax went to Dickey on May 10 It says that because of personal and health problems the group felt Betts needed time away from the band to regain his health. To that end the group has hired another player to replace Betts for the summer tour, wished him well and left open the possibility of a fall reunion..

    If you watch Derrick tells the drummer to slow down to a two beat I think, But Like WUSS81 said, He's not a young man here. ya know. Still his got it and always did. Not sure about Vernon's addition but it could be part of the waiting time. I think he is just getting old. Hey man he said in an interview he would never play again, And here he is. So at 70 he's not bad. I wish I could have played that well at 30.

    According to what Butch Trucks posted on the ABB site in 2000, he was going to quit the ABB due to Dickey. When he found out Gregg Allman was also going to quit from his wife (Butch's wife), he called Gregg & they both called Jaimoe to inform him they were out & not doing the summer 2000 tour if Dickey was there. Butch said Jaimoe would not agree with a complete split so they suspended Dickey for the summer. Dickey sued the band & that is when he, Gregg & Jaimoe decided Dickey quit. U agree?
