Kathy is such a godsend. My MIL died in the fall and my mother was abusive so we are estranged (my kids have no grandmother). I don't have a person like her to be my decluttering sidekick and support person. I'm sure I'm not alone in that and why many of us appreciate seeing her in the videos. ❤️
Great video! My husband and I just cleaned out our garage. it took about 3 weeks because we carefully went through every item and got rid of anything we were not using or did not need. What a relief to be able to park both cars in there now!!
Two of our kids are moving back in with us for the summer now that they have graduated college. So we are helping them go through all of their belongings. At the same time we are decluttering our finished basement and getting things organized there.
We just finished decluttering, painting and organizing our garage and what a difference it makes! The previous owners built ugly/bulky diy wooden shelves throughout the garage and it made the space so tight. Obviously flat surfaces attract clutter and it was horrible. We finally had enough of it and painfully dismantled every shelf, disposed it off at a landfill and bought just one wire shelf(hated the wood look in the garage), a shoe rack, and a few over the wall tool organizers. Now it’s super spacious. The main thing was being ruthless about throwing away /donating anything unused because it’s easy to let clutter pile up in garages. Painting also made a HUGE difference. Now we can finally wash the floor( the wooden shelves actually went down to the floor). It took us over 3 weeks to be finally done. Hope you like your new garage.
Wow it sounds like your garage is super organized and clean. I hope someday we can add walls and paint this garage too. Thank you for sharing that is very inspiring. =)
Thanks for inspiring me to clear a shelf in the garage by decluttering the hobby box ive kept for a while. Someone else is going to enjoy a sewing machine and the items that go along with that. Feels good to not have that box around anymore that is more ideal self than current reality and how i choose to spend my time these days- mostly enjoying outdoors with my kids.
You did an awesome job, Shannon. Thanks to your mom and Grant for some help. Doesn't it feel so great cleaning up and decluttering? I love that feeling. I understand about the clutter with Grant's wood. My long-time boyfriend is a bricklayer foreman who brings some leftover stuff home, too. Most, but not all, are in 2 areas outside. We call it the "graveyard." Lol. Today, I'm hoping to get all of my flowers potted and get some of the garden planted as tomorrow it's supposed to be 86. Yuck....it's just too soon still for that high temp. I hope you have a fabulous day today! 💗

You and your mom are a real dream team, great work! 🎉 I use to help my parents, it has been a lot inside decluttering lately, we need to go through the garage again this summer. 😊
My new decluttering project is going to be going through all my clothes in my closet. I recently had a baby so I have pre-maternity, maternity, nursing and even pre-marriage clothes. And because I’ve been so many sizes over the years I have clothes I probably will never fit again. This will be my second time doing a big declutter “purge” of my clothes and I look forward to not being stressed in my closet anymore and I really look forward feeling the weight come off my mind, and hopefully that will help me focus on getting weight off my body ;) (Planning to start today actually! I’m going to start by taking everything I own out of my closet and put it onto my bed, then taking out what I like, my favorites, and putting them back in, then I’ll take the things I know I don’t want to keep and put them in a box and I’ll give myself a day or so to go through the items I’m not sure about to give me time to think about it)
What a difference an afternoon makes! My two cents is to still have a designated area for Grant's future scrap wood, otherwise it will somehow just live in the middle of the garage, lol. If he's anything like my husband and I, he will come home from work open up the garage door, and not see any place by the wall in the old scrap wood area, and dump it in the middle to deal with LATER!

Your mom is so awesome! I want to be that kind of mom. This video was super inspiring to get our garage in order. The house is totally decluttered but the garage always get ignored because it is out of sight out of mind.
Looking so good! The end is in sight! Btw, my husband stores extra lumber between 4 garage wall studs, held back with bungee cords. It’s easy to access and takes up no room. He is no carpenter but he built a simple short but wide wood shelf unit on caster wheels that he can move as needed, to relocate or for when he’s doing a project. Just ideas if you welcome them!

I always enjoy your videos. I’ve been watching for years now. I did a major declutter (of my things) a couple of years ago, and have constantly kept it up. It feels so much better! I love watching you & your mom together 😃
All that after-the-project (and before-the-project) packs are real PIA at my home. We both like to sew, but mom is usually so exausted at finish (or too excited to start another project right now) so she doesn't bother to discard unneeded, put leftovers in the storage and put away tools. It is so much simpler to put everything in a plastic bag and tuck it somewhere, saying, i'll look into it later. And later almost never comes.
Love watching the progress on decluttering the garage. It's amazing how things get "collected" rather than sorted out right away when it's in the garage and not in the house! And I loved watching and/or hearing that everyone was working on some needed chore (garage, lawn mowing, childcare....). It's SO much easier when you have others working on projects at the same time (at least it is for me - so uninspiring to work on much-needed chores all alone). I am just starting on my garage clean-out project - hope to have it completely cleared of any items not being used or will be used this summer (and only keeping off-season items that are REGULARLY used stored here in bins or on shelves).....no more "maybe we'll use that" stuff will be kept! I'm tired of keeping things Just Because. Now I'm going to be the person who trashes or donates stuff Just Because - bc I quit my role as the Inventory Manager.
I love what you said about clearing out the stuff that is not being used and no more "maybe we'll use that". That is exactly how I felt when working on this garage. I was able to convince my husband to get rid of things that he was going to "fix" (that had been in the waiting stage for over 6 years!). Finally we are getting rid of all those items. It feels amazing! Thank you for sharing your journey, it's very inspiring =)

I understand about having a messy garage, but oh my did ya'll ever transform yours!! Ours is only better these days bc we've moved and it's smaller and we're minimal and my husband doesn't like projects lol What I realized after watching was that I've always ignored the garage and left it to my husband to clean/tidy/organize. And then when he didn’t haha I'd be stressed and sad bc he would say, "It's a garage, it's not supposed to be pretty."😅 So....I need to do my part to keep it looking...um...prettier😮 🎉🎉🎉So happy for your result! We moved one of those IKEA cube shelves into our garage when our daughter moved out ( It used to be in her bdrm and she no longer wanted it ) to house shoes and dog supplies, leashes, treats etc But, I think your shelves would also be ideal for us. And it looked like you could put it together without bolts or nuts, screws but instead, use a mallet? You & your Mom are amazing the way that you get the job done!!🎉❤😊 I signed up for your newsletter, how nice😊!

They just interlink and then hit them into place. We got them from Costco in case you are looking for some. I love IKEA cube shelves too they are great for getting organized. @Shannon Torrens Hahaha, Well, I wouldn't say our garage is organized, I would just say there's an extreme lack of stuff these days with both kiddos on their own. I still have bins of the kid's papers and then, photos/albums lingering ( I've went through most of them but it's not how I want it....) The ones with the yearbooks and my stuff were easy! I did those shortly after moving here in 2016 & remember watching your video shortly after where you talked about tossing yours,etc I was glad to see those go for sure. But imagine if you'd saved EVERY single thing your three boys ever made and then, faced multiple tubs when they were about 12, 17...19, LOL Yep, that is a LOT. But, progress ((is)) happening here. And our attic is empty! Ty for telling me about Costco for your shelves! I hope your week is also going wonderful; I know it's time for kids to get out of school and most parents around here I know are in frantic stress mode.... I want them to see your videos and know it doesn't always have to be that way 🫠
We desperately need to clean put our garage. When my Hubby & I got married 23x1/2 yrs ago, the majority of my things went in the garage. It's never come out since. I want to just open the door & toss it all, but I do have a few momentos that I'd like to keep. I just don't think they're worth going through the hassle. Ugh! Great video. I always love it when your Mom comes to help out. 😊
Great job. It's looking so good. We have a storage room that's attached to a small garage that leads to a huge carport. It's all so full and messy. I'm doing small chunks of it slowly lol someday I'll get it done.. maybe.

So good to hear that your mom loves her minimized garage space. So much stuff she no longer needed and so worth the time to take care of it. Garages and basements are easy places to leave procrasti-clutter out of sight and out of mind. I would love a super organized basement but it’s hard to organize around ongoing projects.
Hi Shannon. I am working on photos and memorabilia. Getting rid of blurry pictures, duplicates, etc. Not my idea of a fun time, but going down memory lane has made me smile.

Building supplies can be donated to Habitat for Humanity, or check your local organizations. A reminder to folks: paint, chemicals, and many other garage-type liquids cannot be throw out in the regular trash. There are special places to dispose of them safely. Check your local guidelines.
Once upon a time my family had similar items. My husband is a remodeling contractor and we were doing work on our house. We often had extra items that he brought home from job sites.
Great progress! Getting started is the hardest part. I am very minimal but use the find 21 things to declutter regularly. Love watching your videos. You are so sweet. Looking forward to the next video.❤
The bike can be used in the garden as a plant & flower organizer- I saw one in our area & it looks amazing- brightly painted & colorful flowers. Great job done & love seeing you all ❤
That's a huge job! I'm excited to see it through the process. You have shelf units and an area of cupboards, just a matter of finding homes for all the items. I think it will take a few passes to get it where you want. I enjoy watching this type of series, it will be fun and look forward to the next one! Grant should have one entire wall/shelf area section for his work tools. Then he'll have a place to drop off daily used items, easy access.

In a perfect world I would prefer to not have any of our other stuff in there, but we don't have a basement or any other type of storage area. =) I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.
When we lived in Sacramento we would find sooo many black widows in our garage. I recommend heavy leather gloves when moving stuff around outside if you live in California. 😖😖 The garage is looking amazing!! So satisfying.
Hey, Shannon. I'm currently tidying up the under the stairs storage, with no help. 😉 It's just a tiny area where we store the seasonal stuff like the laundry basket/vac cleaner, etc. The usual, as minimalists. 😊
Love your videos with your mom. I’m happy with the house now and needing to clear out the shed, round two! Got a mini summerhouse coming tomorrow which is last big job in garden then it’s just faffing and pots etc. Woohoo!
If you raise that lower shelf to the height of your bins, you can have an extra shelf plus you can more easily clean the bottom of the shelf area, etc.
I’m so glad I’m beyond major projects (I’m retired and have downsized) but I still get a twinge of wanting to help. I’d probably play with the kids though. Grandma-ing. 😂
Great job dear and I like the way to started organizing but I suggest all shelf’s be in one line so it will look better and more organized and regarding my project I finished first round of organizing of store and as you mention some project going on so will use remain items to paint my room since kids rooms paintings done a few weeks ago

My in-laws have so much stuff and are constantly losing things, I'd love to help them remove the stuff they don't need and that are causing them stress, but they are so reluctant to get rid of anything 😖
Honestly it wasn't until my mom started to see how well our home was functioning with less stuff and then she started to watch my videos. I think it finally clicked that they just didn't need or want all the extra stuff.

We are going to be raising chicks and needed to clear a space to brood them. Really, how many rags and old sheets and towels(used for frost protection in the garden) do we need??? Honestly I think I will toss a few. Hubby won't notice? I hope. We are constantly creating more rags and worn out towels. Time to go get the chicks😁

A reminder to folks: paint, chemicals, and many other garage-type liquids cannot be throw out in the regular trash. There are special places to dispose of them safely. Check your local guidelines.
Once upon a time my family had similar items. My husband is a remodeling contractor and we were doing work on our house. We often had extra items that he brought home from job sites.

The bike can be used in the garden as a plant & flower organizer- I saw one in our area & it looks amazing- brightly painted & colorful flowers. Great job done & love seeing you all ❤

Grant should have one entire wall/shelf area section for his work tools.
Then he'll have a place to drop off daily used items, easy access.
Thank you Linda! Yes we are giving him the majority of the shelves for all the tools and home project stuff since this is his working garage. In a perfect world I would prefer to not have any of our other stuff in there, but we don't have a basement or any other type of storage area. =) I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.

When we lived in Sacramento we would find sooo many black widows in our garage. I recommend heavy leather gloves when moving stuff around outside if you live in California. 😖😖 The garage is looking amazing!! So satisfying.

Hey, Shannon. I'm currently tidying up the under the stairs storage, with no help. 😉 It's just a tiny area where we store the seasonal stuff like the laundry basket/vac cleaner, etc. The usual, as minimalists. 😊

Love your videos with your mom. I’m happy with the house now and needing to clear out the shed, round two! Got a mini summerhouse coming tomorrow which is last big job in garden then it’s just faffing and pots etc. Woohoo!

If you raise that lower shelf to the height of your bins, you can have an extra shelf plus you can more easily clean the bottom of the shelf area, etc.

I’m so glad I’m beyond major projects (I’m retired and have downsized) but I still get a twinge of wanting to help. I’d probably play with the kids though. Grandma-ing. 😂

Great job dear and I like the way to started organizing but I suggest all shelf’s be in one line so it will look better and more organized and regarding my project I finished first round of organizing of store and as you mention some project going on so will use remain items to paint my room since kids rooms paintings done a few weeks ago

How did you get your mum to start considering decluttering? My in-laws have so much stuff and are constantly losing things, I'd love to help them remove the stuff they don't need and that are causing them stress, but they are so reluctant to get rid of anything 😖
Honestly it wasn't until my mom started to see how well our home was functioning with less stuff and then she started to watch my videos. I think it finally clicked that they just didn't need or want all the extra stuff.

We are going to be raising chicks and needed to clear a space to brood them. Really, how many rags and old sheets and towels(used for frost protection in the garden) do we need??? Honestly I think I will toss a few. Hubby won't notice? I hope. We are constantly creating more rags and worn out towels. Time to go get the chicks😁
