Also a bit of cultural context, hugging like that isn't really remarkable in the West, but in Japan physical displays like that are normally seen as pretty intimate rather than platonic

I'm not one of those people who want characters to be gay just for the sake of it, and I wasn't even /trying/ to headcanon Yu as being gay for Yosuke when I started playing, but there is so much fodder for it that it's what ended happening some hours in. And Carl Bloke, yeah, definitely. Yosuke strikes me as a genuinely good guy who sometimes is really insensitive nonetheless, because his image and what he percieves as normal matters to him: his shadow calls him out on wanting to be the hero, and yet that part of him is never truly adressed. This would've made for good character development

You should've added some of the Persona Q scenes for good measure XD Like, when Yosuke ends up as Yu's "destined partner" and he even plays along for a few seconds before realizing his slip-up. Not to mention the moment when everyone has to hide in bathroom stalls and, if Yu ends up squeezed in a closet (wink wonk) with Shinji, Akihiko and Junpei, he can express that "this it just the way he likes it". I swear, this game was a gold mine for "gay Yu" moments.

There's a moment in Persona 5 Strikers where you can essentially say _you're looking good"_ to Ryuji in the baths, to kinda break that moment when the boys are getting thirsty for the girls next door, and Ryuji just nonchalantly _"thanks, I've been working out. Wait what?"_ Quite a striking contrast with Yosuke, I thought, who probably would have screamed "quit it partner, you're freaking me out!!!" or something with that vibe. Someone comfortable with their sexuality vs someone not comfortable with their sexuality.

The group date cafe scene just isn't right without Yosuke saying "I think I've gone to a place I can never come back from." The anime is sooo damn funny.
I definitely wouldn't have romanced Yosuke - I wouldn't event want him as a friend - but I believe taking out the romance option was a mistake, in that it made Yosuke's character inconsistent. I think several scenes were written with the idea that Yosuke was in love with Souji. For example, when he's being homophobic with Kanji, or when he's behaving like a creepy pervert with the girls, it's mostly his attempt at convincing himself he isn't, in fact, gay and attracted to his best friend. Him being a dick to Naoto (calling her useless, etc.) also makes sense in that context. When she joins the team, Naoto basically replaces Yosuke as the second-in-command, and therefore as Souji's "partner", so Yosuke is just reacting like a jealous lover. Atlus removed his attraction for Souji, but they kept the many scenes that were explained by that attraction. So all that's left of Yosuke is an unlikable teenager who acts like a dick to Kanji and Naoto without any reason. They should have either kept the romance stuff or rewritten the scenes that were based on the romance idea.

Kanji is either way more open minded than Yosuke or he's naïve. Personally I think Kanji came to terms with the fact that in his heart, he's admittedly attracted to masculine personalities (as evidence by his shadow, which became his persona after he came to terms with it). I'd like to think Kanji at least has a slight attraction to Yu based on how he handles himself. Yu's confidence is very attractive.

Honestly I see Kanji as straight but not afraid to say things that are typically feminine/ do things that may be seen as soft. I mean, that swimsuit comment was definitely interesting lmao. But I feel like Kanji gives off tough guy vibes partially because she doesn’t make such a fuss about “oh no I might look gay!” He just says what he thinks and corrects the people who misinterpret. Yosuke on the other hand, gives off strong insecure vibes. He’s so bothered by Yu’s comments that he says stuff like “Don’t joke around like that” or “Dude that’s what girls do.” Sometimes when they’re not even directed at him. I understand getting mad if your friend is hitting on you, but don’t go after them cause they’re hitting on the other dude in the party smh. I know the game was made in the 2000’s so times were different. But still. It’s sad, because these statements could’ve had the potential to be discussed or explained in a social link, and/or led to some kinda development where Yosuke doesn’t say that shit anymore. The worst part in my eyes is that the unused romance between Yu and Yosuke could’ve explained why these remarks from Yosuke were so prevalent. It makes much more sense for him to be projecting his own doubts rather then shitting on his friends for no reason. In the final game, all these accusations towards Kanji and Yu were stripped of any real story purpose, and it’s sad.

You should've added some of the Persona Q scenes for good measure XD Like, when Yosuke ends up as Yu's "destined partner" and he even plays along for a few seconds before realizing his slip-up.
Not to mention the moment when everyone has to hide in bathroom stalls and, if Yu ends up squeezed in a closet (wink wonk) with Shinji, Akihiko and Junpei, he can express that "this it just the way he likes it".
I swear, this game was a gold mine for "gay Yu" moments.

Wait what?"_ Quite a striking contrast with Yosuke, I thought, who probably would have screamed "quit it partner, you're freaking me out!!!" or something with that vibe. Someone comfortable with their sexuality vs someone not comfortable with their sexuality.

I definitely wouldn't have romanced Yosuke - I wouldn't event want him as a friend - but I believe taking out the romance option was a mistake, in that it made Yosuke's character inconsistent. I think several scenes were written with the idea that Yosuke was in love with Souji. For example, when he's being homophobic with Kanji, or when he's behaving like a creepy pervert with the girls, it's mostly his attempt at convincing himself he isn't, in fact, gay and attracted to his best friend. Him being a dick to Naoto (calling her useless, etc.) also makes sense in that context. When she joins the team, Naoto basically replaces Yosuke as the second-in-command, and therefore as Souji's "partner", so Yosuke is just reacting like a jealous lover.
Atlus removed his attraction for Souji, but they kept the many scenes that were explained by that attraction. So all that's left of Yosuke is an unlikable teenager who acts like a dick to Kanji and Naoto without any reason. They should have either kept the romance stuff or rewritten the scenes that were based on the romance idea.

Kanji is either way more open minded than Yosuke or he's naïve. Personally I think Kanji came to terms with the fact that in his heart, he's admittedly attracted to masculine personalities (as evidence by his shadow, which became his persona after he came to terms with it). I'd like to think Kanji at least has a slight attraction to Yu based on how he handles himself. Yu's confidence is very attractive.

Honestly I see Kanji as straight but not afraid to say things that are typically feminine/ do things that may be seen as soft. I mean, that swimsuit comment was definitely interesting lmao. But I feel like Kanji gives off tough guy vibes partially because she doesn’t make such a fuss about “oh no I might look gay!” He just says what he thinks and corrects the people who misinterpret.
Yosuke on the other hand, gives off strong insecure vibes. He’s so bothered by Yu’s comments that he says stuff like “Don’t joke around like that” or “Dude that’s what girls do.” Sometimes when they’re not even directed at him. I understand getting mad if your friend is hitting on you, but don’t go after them cause they’re hitting on the other dude in the party smh. I know the game was made in the 2000’s so times were different. But still.
It’s sad, because these statements could’ve had the potential to be discussed or explained in a social link, and/or led to some kinda development where Yosuke doesn’t say that shit anymore. The worst part in my eyes is that the unused romance between Yu and Yosuke could’ve explained why these remarks from Yosuke were so prevalent. It makes much more sense for him to be projecting his own doubts rather then shitting on his friends for no reason. In the final game, all these accusations towards Kanji and Yu were stripped of any real story purpose, and it’s sad.
